BARRECA | LEIMER - 'DUAL MONO'

Dual Mono is the third Barreca | Leimer collaboration. The process used for producing Dual Mono was designed to destabilize established habits and predilections in favour of responding to the music in at least subjectively new ways. It was also designed to reduce the illusion of control, to become more responsive to and accepting of unpredicted outcomes, and to give the music—as much as possible—a voice less tampered with. Each piece for Dual Mono was authored by only one of the participants, the other receiving MIDI data and being limited to revoicing the composition. With a general goal of maintaining a result that was somewhat, though not purely, minimalist in sympathy, each piece was then assembled in its final form by the originator, now limited to controlling relative levels, crossfades, editing and processing. The final fifteen pieces that span two CDs embrace a range of emergent, generative and traditional forms that express a calm, informed ambience amid unsettled, shifting soundscapes. Of an earlier collaboration, Textura stated “the sheer density of sound presented in representative settings such as ‘Loess’, ‘Talus’, and ‘Oram’ is incredible, and one comes away from Field Characteristics convinced that the claim regarding the hundreds of sounds involved in the recording’s presentation is clearly fact, not hyperbole.” Barreca | Leimer

JOYCE MANOR - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Joyce Manor come correct. Two records deep into their career and it’s clear that they’re torchbearers of a style one could trace back to The Ergs or Jawbreaker, depending on what coast you favor. Theirs is a blend of poppy punk blast and highvoltage heartsore immediacy that always lands a hit. The songs are short, sweet and say their piece in step with lyrics that read like a tour diary exorcism hangover - no joke. It makes good sense that they would tackle Cody, their 2016 full-length, with producer Rob Schanpf at the helm. His work with Guided by Voices, Saves the Day and Elliott Smith is an ideal resume given the raw materials at hand. Their recording from the Blue Room, their fi rst offi cial live release, features a sold-out crowd and full-bodied, frenetic live versions of “Constant Nothing,” from their 2011 self-titled LP as well as “Christmas Card” from their Pitchfork-approved 2014 LP Never Hungover Again. Simply put, one of the best crowds we’ve ever hosted at TMR. About 30 seconds into “Christmas Card,” there’s a really special moment where vocalist Barry Johnson steps back from the mic and the hollering crowd jumps up to fi ll in the gaps and turn the chorus inside out. This moment is what live shows are all about and speaks to the greatest skill of the Torrence, CA, four-piece - connecting with their fans on a level other newcomers can only dream about.

Caddywhompus are lions of a noisy, emotive new school of math rock which has thrived in recent years, especially in the South. At this point, you’re just as likely to fi nd their records in the racks of a DIY space as you are on the walls of record shops around the world. With close ties to Community Records, they are rightful benefi ciaries of a nationwide grassroots underground support built on their consistently excellent output, tireless touring and necessary live show. These 3 live tracks, being their first official live release, encapsulates what is so magnetic about the duo - nimble yet mushrooming euphoria in each composition. The A-side single, Decent, is a chugging, arpeggiated and absolutely contagious live sing-along that can also be heard on their 2017 LP Odd Hours on highly respected NYC indie Infl ated Records.

MY BUBBA - 'GONE B/W YOURE GONNA MAKE ME LONESOME WHEN YOU GO'

Formats
  • TMR409 - 7"

Details

“Gone” b/w “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” is the first new release from My Bubba following last year’s acclaimed Big Bad Good. The Scandinavian folk duo – Icelander Guðbjörg Tómasdóttir (a.k.a. Bubba) and Sweden’s My Larsdotter – formed in 2013 and have since concocted a soulful, unadorned sound all their own utilizing little more than the basic elements of warm harmonies, acoustic guitar, and the Norwegian lap harp known as a cittra. Big Bad Good, My Bubba’s latest full-length release, was produced in Brooklyn by Shahzad Ismaily (Will Oldham, Jolie Holland), with its songs written and recorded almost immediately as they were written. While their prior work was recorded almost entirely as a duo, “Gone” sees My Bubba joined in Third Man Studios by a backing combo comprised of bassist Jack Lawrence, keyboardist Dean Fertita, and legendary Nashville drummer Whip Triplet. “Gone” is the A-side and the fi rst of their songs written on a century-old lap harp, which was procured from an old boyfriend’s attic. After breaking up, My Bubba wrote this song about the old lover on the lap harp. On the B-Side, a cover of Bob Dylan’s “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” serves as one of the first songs the duo ever sang together in Copenhagen. They still play it most evenings together on the road. Tracks recorded with producer Jack White III at Third Man Studios • First Blue Series Release of 2017

GREG ASHLEY & THE WESTERN PLAYBOYS - 'S/T'

Formats
  • TMR393 - LP
    813547023926
Details

Greg Ashley has tracked across the States’ metropolises, fringes and sticks for years now, releasing records under his own name and earlier on with black magic psych cult The Gris Gris. Now together with the Western Playboys, you can hear the dusty technicolor Rio Grande fl owing in the veins of these new recordings. Many of these songs are Greg’s indomitable take on waltz, country swing and golden honky-tonk songwriters like Cowboy Joe Babcock and Hank Mills, but lest we forget the cover of Estrus records’ finest garage rock nihilists The Makers. This 12” EP plays out from start to finish like a band in a washed out juke joint at a desert outpost from a Barry Gifford novel - strung out, sharp-witted and never dull. Square it up and spin it now!

Summoned to play it the old way in a new age, Trondheim, Norway quintet Dunbarrow draws inspiration from freezing winter nights, unpolished demo tapes from the 70’s and the Swedish throwback rock from the beginning of the 21st century. The result is Norwegian proto-doom with a back-to-basics sound, from Pentagram and Witchfinder General to Quicksilver Messenger Service. Dunbarrow’s clean, unadorned sound shares the unpretentious brilliance of classic heavy progenitors playing basements and barns, before the big budgets and bloated habits diluted hard rock into an echo chamber awash in reverb and layered in distant, screeching hobbits. The band’s 9-track self-titled album is a classic in the sense that every song becomes instantly recognizable after just one listen. With lyrics like the clever paean to a young witch mother’s birth of “Lucifer’s Child”, Dunbarrow has a wealth of gloomy sentiments: “Can you understand my young mother’s plight / Away from the comforts that burn at the stake / She gave birth to a venomous snake / On her great pyre she smiled / For she carried Lucifer’s child.” Dunbarrow is based in the far northern Norwegian city Trondheim, but is originally from Haugesund on the west coast of Norway. The band has been playing together for over 8 years through different band names and genres. In 2014, vocalist Espen Andersen joined the band upon the departure of original singer/bassist Richard Chappell. Sondre Berge went from playing drums to playing bass. Kenneth Lønning and Eirik Øvregård are still on the guitars, with Pål Gunnar Dale taking over the drums permanently in 2016. Espen Andersen recorded and mixed the debut album at Stoy Studios. Dunbarrow is hitting the studio for their second album this summer.

SHOOTING GUNS - 'FLAVOUR COUNTRY'

Canadian sextet Shooting Guns is known (and oft-nominated) for their film soundtrack work, but Flavour Country is more like a collection of anthems for your jettison from this universe into the multiverse. While they’re known for heavy and saturated sounds befitting crazed horror-comedy flicks like Netflix hit WolfCop, Flavour Country features some of the band’s fastest, heaviest and most visceral material to date. Yet, it also features some of the band’s most atmospheric sounds as well. At times there are slight hints of Ennio Morricone’s Spaghetti Western twang amidst the looping Meddle-era Pink Floyd heavy psych and driving drone reminiscent of Bobby Beausoleil’s belladonna laced soundtrack to Kenneth Anger’s Lucifer Rising. But for the most part here, Shooting Guns is out for blood, regardless of tempo. Album opener “Ride Free” kicks off with a blistering wall of guitars blaring and rattling out of the gate like mutant progeny to fellow Canadian biker-rock heroes Steppenwolf having duly fired all of the guns, exploded into space and returned to hunt down every last one of us. It accelerates from there: “French Safe” sounds like an unhinged battalion of musicians driving full throttle like a scene from a George Miller Road Warrior movie. Biting, lengthier tracks like “Simian Shelf” and the title track occupy the heavy end of the psychedelic spectrum, haunting the foggy moor between early, bluesy Sabbath-styled doom riffery and heavy pulse-riding kraut-rock. Flavour Country is the first album recorded by the band themselves at their own Pre-Rock Studios in Saskatoon, SK, located in the middle of the Canadian prairies. The album title’s spelling is itself a nod to the band’s Great White North homeland. The album was mastered by John McBain (ex-Monster Magnet, Carlton Melton), who also mastered the band’s previous RidingEasy releases. Shooting Guns have toured over 60,000 miles across Canada over the past 7 years but have yet to tour Internationally, which will be a big focus for them after this release. They are touring their live score to F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu across Canada throughout 2017 and also just finished scoring the soundtrack to Another WolfCop (sequel to WolfCop), which is slated for a US theatrical release in Sept 2017. Their sophomore LP, Brotherhood of the Ram, released in 2013 through RidingEasy Records was nominated for the 2015 JUNO Metal/Hard Album of the Year as well as the Polaris Music Prize. Their debut LP, Born To Deal in Magic: 1952-1976, was also nominated for the Polaris Music Prize in 2012.

BROOKE BLAIR & WILL BLAIR - 'LIVE CARGO: ORIGINAL SCORE'

Formats
  • BRR333 - LP (COLOURED)
Details

The last few years have been a rollercoaster ride for brothers Brooke Blair and Will Blair. In 2013 they scored Jeremy Saulnier's brutal revenge thriller Blue Ruin. Saulnier had been a longtime friend, and Blue Ruin also starred their brother Macon, as the slightly incompetent Dwight, looking to enact his revenge. 2015 saw the composers, actor and director reunited for the excellent and perhaps even more brutal Green Room. This year, they've scored two new films for Netflix. Macon Blair's hilariously bloody I Don't Feel at Home In This World Anymore, and Small Crimes which has just premiered this past month. Before these two latest projects, they worked on to score Logan Sandler's 2016 dramatic thriller Live Cargo. A dark monochrome thriller weaving together a plot of struggling relationships, child loss and the dark world of human trafficking. The Blairs worked closely with director Logan Sandler to capture the tone and texture of a particularly depraved way of life in the Bahamas. Violin bows were were used to resonate old piano strings, metal fans and acoustic guitars. Church organs and a small chamber choir provided a hymn-like chordal foundation. Distant lap steel guitars and accordions suggest somber melodies and slightly detuned vintage synths including an ARP 2500 and a mellotron create a sense of disorientation and uneasiness. This vinyl edition is a co-release between Blackest Rainbow and Wayfind Records, the Blair's new label. Pressed at 45 rpm on 180 gram seafoam coloured vinyl, packaged in UV gloss finished sleeves with black polylined inner sleeves.
