HEADLAND began in 2013 as a soundtrack to a gorgeous collection of found super8 film fragments depicting surfing and coastal culture in and around Lennox Head, Australia in the 1970s. For this release, contemporary, High Definition slow-motion footage by award winning filmmaker Stephen Jones (El Mar Mi Alma) overscores each track of a full length LP. The film provides a discrete and personally emotive portrait of the Lennox coastline that builds upon traditional notions of landscape and seascape where each and every frame seems painted by hand. The instrumentation is lyrical, the compositions quaint and heartfelt. The combination is a personal insight into an emotional understanding of place. With an almost distinct Australian fever to its pitch, “True Flowers” ebbs and flows like the proverbial tide it is “soundtracking”, the players of this collective have a long history in the underground/mainstream music scene in Australia, and with this record have created a similar cinematic/avant garde-pop as created by the likes of Calexico, Friends of Dean Martinez, Boxhead Ensemble, Lullaby for the Working Class, and even Pink Floyd and Neil Young, so immersive and far-reaching is their sound. DVDs will accompany the first 300 LPs and 200 CDs of True Flowers from This Painted World. Band member bios: Les Dorahy A well-regarded visual artist, since 2006 Les has operated the Nashua Road recording studio and in recent times his creative interests have been directed towards the accordion, composition and audio engineering. Brock Fitzgerald A highly sought-after multi-instrumentalist, his CV includes recording artists such as The Scare, Wolf & Cub, Steve Smyth and Colourflux. Murray Paterson Artist, writer, curator and arts educator, Murray is probably best known as a musician/composer working with Tex Perkins and The Dark Horses. In 2009 he and Perkins also collaborated on a film score for Rachel Ward's feature film Beautiful Kate. Joel Silbersher Singer/guitarist for seminal Australian rock band GOD (1986–1989) who had an enduring hit with My Pal, written by Silbersher. Joel went on to form Hoss and Tendrils (with Charlie Owen). As a solo artist he released Greasy Lens in 2002. Rebel Waltz Films (Stephen Jones and Tatiana Velasco) El Mar, Mi Alma (2012) ~ A visual love song to the surf blessed land of Chile, its people, and the ocean that defines it. Ghost of Neruda (in development) ~ A thrilling investigation into the alleged murder of the most widely read poet of the twentieth century - Pablo Neruda.

Extra fine songwriter and longtime bedroom-pop auteur Kelley Stoltz delivers on the promise so many of his records slyly hint at. Que Aura is the platonic ideal of a Kelley Stoltz record, which is a very exciting thing indeed. Stoltz embraces his best synth-pop tendencies, with this incredibly self-assured set of tender tunes, combining in his own hangdog fashion both a disco-lit abandon and the attendant post-party sighs of dread and remorse. Great songs come out of Stoltz at an alarming rate on any given day but this particular collection is some of his most effortlessly catchy stuff yet. Ennui under the disco lights suits him very well—there’s a hearty sip of Pulp-ian white Brit shimmy with a wink, a dash of Fleetwood Mac’s cynically professional late ’70s sheen, and even a spritz or two of Echo and The Bunnymen, which should surprise no one who’s noticed Stoltz has been playing guitar with McCulloch and Company for the past year or so. This record cements Stoltz’s place in the power-pop pantheon where he belongs, right between Dwight Twilley and Martin Newell. Let the Hall of Fame know!

MAD WALLS - 'SOMEWHERE, ANYWHERE, BIRTH'

“I happened across Somewhere Anywhere like a troll... walking down web street, I walked by a window playing music and clicked on a door. I saw a rock in the middle of the room, and I looked underneath it. The moment I heard the title track “Somewhere Anywhere,” I thought I had unearthed a rarity, an old bootleg or new music from a lost group. The best part was that it came from the living, a band playing music at this very time in space. (This) (is) draped-static-dim-seed-Los-Angeles-music, a flame that gets passed on down and through the avenues. Designed to be found. This mini-album floats in its own universe, and is on repeat. That is all I am allowed to say about it. Las Murallas Mad.” —Tim Presley “The Mad Walls formed in Los Angeles in 2016, led by frontman/songwriter Christopher Mercado. The band started as a personal recording project, with early demo recordings that were captured on a four-track cassette recorder. With the addition of drummer Johnathan Martin, the duo have made music that highlights their influences from earlier sonic pioneers, blending styles, and adding depth to their frenetic pursuit of a post-psychedelic sound. Brushing against the Los Angeles landscape, The Mad Walls offer a subdued but exploratory vision of sound and fury.” —Sam Brown

Guided By Voices is on a roll. One could argue that GBV is never not on a roll, that Robert Pollard’s output plows past the word prolific like prolific is standing still in a snowbank and that’s true, but this new version of the band (Doug Gillard, Bobby Bare Jr, Mark Shue, Kevin March) has given Pollard new tools to complement his song-hammer. Thus, ergo, quod erat demonstrandum: roll. Hot on the heels of the smothered-in-plaudits double album August By Cake comes this hot and heavy fifteen-tune long player, a melody-dense thwack to the earholes that will both energize and deplete your body of its remaining musicappreciation enzymes. Recorded by the band in New ork, and by Pollard in hio, How Do You Spell Heaven capitalizes on the current incarnation’s tour-buffed shine without sacrificing eternal verities such as but not limited to off-kilter rhythmic olts krazy chords purposefully imperfect harmonies and fragmented structures that start and stop on a coin of small denomination and go somewhere else, and uickly. There’s more, much more—the easiest, laziest way to sum up this latest album is the most obvious How do you spell heaven Shout it from the rafters G-B-!

DENNIS CALLACI - 'THE END OF NIGHT'

Formats
  • SHR191 - CD

Details

Dennis Callaci’s (Refrigerator, Shrimper Records) second solo album is a knee play, a low budget opera, a tone poem with broken keys. It follows up last year’s Bed of Light, about which Tiny Mix Tapes wrote: “Poetry from a lofi pulpit, really, though Callaci seems to technically be singing hymns of non-redemption that’s too fleeting yet perfect because it’ll keep you coming back.” This album reunites him with Joel Connell, who played drums on the earliest of Refrigerator records just after Pilsbury Hardcore broke up and during the formative years of Man Is The Bastard. The two have not recorded together for over twenty five years! Along with Connell on drums, Franklin Bruno plays the piano, Daniel McDonough is on the harp, Rael Callaci programs 808s and Korg synthesizers and Henry Callaci mans the saxophone. Engineered by Steve Folta (who also lent some back up vocals to the proceedings), the record / song was recorded to be heard only on CD for a number of reason. It clocks in at over thirty minutes. No rich man’s 8-track mid-song fade for side two vinyl version available. No streaming candy corn flavor cancer aftertaste availability. No iTunes cruddy MP3 version made available for some distracted fool’s slave labor Chinese phone. No Pandora, no big box bankruptcies in wait. This little tiny compact disc is a small press. In near solo record fashion, Callaci supplied the artwork, liner notes, hidden poem that reads on the window of the CD player as the song spins as well as a number of instruments. There are a couple of hidden pagan eggs in the package to boot. No touring, barely selling, still breathing, perfect.

PATSY'S RAT - 'ROUNDING UP'

Formats
  • ZZZ150 - 7"

Details

Dirtnap hasn’t released a 7-inch in a few years, but this one was worth breaking the dry streak! Patsy’s Rats is Portland power (pop) couple Patsy Gelb and Christian Blunda (aka Billy Jeans from Mean Jeans). Rounding out the lineup is a revolving door of rhythm sections that compromises a who’s-who of Portland bassplayers and drummers. (On these recordings it’s Steve and Jon from Mope Grooves). Patsy’s Rats have already accomplished a lot for a newish band that doesn’t even have a full length out. They’ve toured Europe with Giant Sand (and another Euro tour planned for September 2017), had some songs on the Green Room soundtrack, and released four 7-inches (this is the fourth) on four different labels, with a fifth hot on this one’s heels. These will be compiled on a singles-compilation on Burger, with an all-new record recorded and in the can. Two absolutely note-perfect guitar-pop rockers, with Gelb taking the vocal lead on side A, and a sweet duet on side B. Really, this epitomizes everything a 7-inch should stand for: two great songs that leave you wanting more. And there’s more on the way…
