“Close your eyes and imagine the Everly Brothers wearing Tie-Dyed Nudie Suits. Okay, now open them. There’s Mapache. Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci are barely in their 20s and already rising to the top of the new wave of West Coast Cosmic Americana. Born and raised in Glendale, California, their breathtaking harmonies and heartfelt yet heady sound was honed by surfing the beaches and exploring the deserts and canyons of their native California. “The lineage of the band has blood running back to the first wave of psychedelic country revivalists Beachwood Sparks—Clay is a cousin of main man Chris Gunst. Chris and I went to bat for the band by helping them score their first club shows and recording sessions with Dan Horne. “Dan eventually produced this album at the vintage analog halls of legendary Valentine Recording Studios, where the tape rolled and captured the live spirited harmony, skillful strumming and genuinely well-crafted songs that everyone from Chris Robinson to Jonathan Richman have fallen in love with. The real charm lies in the simplicity of their voices and the songs that recall a young Gene Clark, The Louvins, Crosby, Stills and Townes ... it’s all there and more. “One memorable night they showed up to a GospelbeacH gig with deep surfer tans and big white circles around their eyes just like raccoons (Mapache is Spanish for raccoon). The boys set up on stage, sang and played their timeless and soon-to-be classic songs into a single microphone. Time stood still, and the normally chatty LA crowd closed their mouths and opened their ears and their hearts. At that very moment I knew they were on their way.” —Brent Rademaker, Los Angeles 2017

AVAILABLE ON BLACK & COLOURED VINYL An exciting development from under strange Australian lablights: ORB re-spawn from last year’s Birth with a further mutated slab of paranoid heavy shred, Naturality. They bring the dread with a kinetic muscularity and a pleasantly evolving synthetic strangeness, as if having eaten of the wrong part of the garden, causing familiar things start to seem less so. The effects of these spores on the modern brain, already clogged with a steady drip of zips and zooms, are fresh and confusing. ORB are young and fleet fingered, and certainly know their way around a riff, but bring everything into an almost alien clarity both blunted and futuristic. ORB, you see, have ripened quite radically, and one can only think at an accelerated pace upon their travels with King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. This album finds them sprouting new appendages and clawing at their enclosures. This is potent stuff—be careful! Shroomed out doom rock extra-special… early Sabbath, Edgar Broughton Band, Buffalo…down tuned and grooving up the stoned rock …

Presenting Joseph Childress’s second LP release, following his 2013 collection of home recorded demos, The Rebirths. The tracks on this self-titled album are borne from his adventures throughout the West: working on a cattle ranch in Wyoming, riding trains and living out of his car. His poignant lyrics about loneliness and the western landscape are right at home with a stronger country sound that defines itself on the record’s opening track “My Land.” Childress recorded in Portland with veteran Americana musician and producer Mike Coykendall, known for his work with M. Ward, Bright Eyes, Jolie Holland, She & Him and Old Joe Clarks. He began with tracking guitar and vocals solo. Additional musicians Aaron Robinson (Linda Perhacs, Sean Rowe, Bridget St. John), Joey Ficken (Swords), Tom Lucas (Crooked Jades) and Coykendall layered guitars, percussion, fiddle and bass to create a hearty mountain band that pivots between spartan country, gritty pop, and outsider Americana. The results follow in the tradition of earlier troubadours (Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Kate Wolf) and modern alt-country artists (Jason Molina, Cass McCombs and Will Oldham). Childress’s romantic despair and cautious optimism are a snapshot of a modern journeyman, a man who is confronting the myths of the West while attempting to create his own. Coykendall’s production, with the mixing assistance of Chris Arnold (The American Opry) and mastering by Weasel Walter (The Flying Luttenbachers), clears a spot among the rafters of an old barn deep in the Oregon night, allowing witness to Childress and his band playing for no one but themselves.

Simon Joyner is among America’s best songwriters, so says Gillian Welch, Conor Oberst, Kevin Morby, and others. With his new double album, Step Into The Earthquake, he strikes for the personal while acknowledging that the times they are a-changin’ around us again. Things are leaning shitty right now, and the characters in Joyner’s songs experience the dissolution of comfort amid anxious concerns regarding our turbulent times. To record, Joyner’s band, The Ghosts, holed up with longtime collaborator, Michael Krassner (Boxhead Ensemble), in Omaha’s ARC Studio, developing songs from skeletal foundations to full-on group efforts. Joyner’s vision may be dark but it stops short of nihilism. Where do we go from here? The best move toward answering that question is knowing where we stand right now. This expansive album offers a poet’s truthful view, however disconcerting, that to survive whatever is coming for us, we have to confront and understand it first. So, go ahead and step into the earthquake. “Omaha has given us the reigning heir to Henry Miller’s dark emotional mirror, Townes Van Zandt’s three-chord moan, and Lou Reed’s warehouse minimalism: his name is Simon Joyner.” —Gillian Welch “Pound for pound Simon Joyner is my favorite lyricist of all time.” —Conor Oberst “Simon’s always been a secret handshake amongst me and my peers. He’s a pioneer.” —Kevin Morby

Details

Kiasmos mark their return in 2017 with a new 12” EP titled Blurred — available worldwide on October 6th via Erased Tapes. Since their 2015 Swept EP, the duo have been performing shows extensively across the world. After writing and recording together in their native Iceland this year, the pair will be bringing a glimpse of light to a particularly gloomy time of year as their light sounds are brighter than ever. Words from Ólafur and Janus, August 2017: “To write new material felt like a new beginning for us after two years of touring. The plan was to write something a tad darker than our previous stuff. Spring in Reykjavík had other plans though, as this turned out to be our brightest release to date.” — Janus Rasmussen “Stimming was one of the reasons we started making four-on-the-floor music and we have been listening to Bonobo since we were young, so it was a great honour that they wanted to contribute remixes for the EP.” — Ólafur Arnalds The EP closes with remixes from British producer Bonobo and German electronic musician Stimming, taking tracks Blurred and Paused into different coloured realms. The cover art featuring the iconic Kiasmos symbol is by long-time Erased Tapes collaborator Torsten Posselt at FELD.
