THE STALLION - 'DARK SIDE OF THE WALL'

Formats
  • ITR307 - 3xLP
    759718530711
Details

All hail the debut release from The Stallion! The Stallion is Ben Wallers and Alastair Mackinven of the Country Teasers. For two years they labored at the legendary Hit Factory recording studios in London as their schedule allowed. The project at hand was their long-planned / often-threatened The Dark Side Of The Wall — a song for song interpretation of Pink Floyd’s 1979 album The Wall. At long last In The Red is proud to unveil the results. It should surprise no one familiar with Ben Wallers’s work or re-cord collection that he would choose this particular album to honor. The Wall’s influence has been noticeable in his music before (see “Spiderman In The Flesh” from the Country Teasers’ Empire Strikes Back album). The man likes his Floyd—he even rates The Final Cut as “brilliant”. It should also surprise no one that Roger Waters’s compositions from The Wall take a morbid and twisted turn in the hands of Wallers and Mackinven. What was already a fairly dark and bleak piece of work becomes much darker and bleaker here. It’s also longer. Pink Floyd’s original contained 26 songs spread across four sides of long playing vinyl which, by comparison, was the same number of tracks as Pink Floyd’s four previous studio albums combined. The Stallion’s take on these same 26 selections spans six sides of vinyl. Mackinven says, “it’s longer so it’s better, right?” This is a beautiful piece of work both aurally and aesthetically. Packaged in a gorgeous heavy duty double gatefold, this limited edi- tion triple-vinyl package won’t be around long.

TENEBROUS LIAR - 'THE CUT'

Formats
  • DEATHTO2 - LP
    5060446122013
Details

tenebrous LIAR developed as the result of a musical urge felt by photographer Steve Gullick in 2005, much frantic sound bending & home recording resulted in an album released by Fire records the following year. It quickly became apparent that Gullick needed a band in order to perform live, he enlisted the help of an eclectic & ever evolving line-up of friends who made a further five albums in as many years and played shows with a very diverse selection of artists including Scout Niblett, Josh T. Pearson, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Foo Fighters, Duke Garwood, Oxbow, Soulsavers, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Ed Harcourt & Cindytalk. In 2016 tenebrous LIAR (Brendan Casey on bass, Ben Edgar on drums & Steve Gullick on guitar & vocals) set about writing & recording their new album in Coventry rehearsal rooms & in Gullick’s home, the idea was to record improvisations to create a freer sounding record, the band channeled psychedelic era Miles Davis, early PIL & their love for Neil Young's 'Dead Man' to create ‘The Cut’.

CUNEYT SEPETCI - 'BULGAR GAYDASI'

Formats
  • LM16 - LP
    655035021614
Details

The second album by Istanbul’s clarinet virtuoso Cüneyt Sepetçi is an intense trip into modern Turkish wedding and party music. The foundations go deep into Turkey and the surrounding regions’ history, which each generation innovates and develops. These days, no wedding or circumcision party is complete without the sound of the micro-tonal keyboard. A new addition, these Turkish keyboardists can play between notes, and supply banging club rhythms in wide variety of time signatures. Sepetçi uses the bedrock of Volkan Sever’s synth insanity as a jumping off point for some truly crazy solos. His fluttering sheets of notes tie knots around the pulsating, fried synthesizer. For this recording session, Sepetçi brought in two drummers, Fatih Özden (tapan) and Samet Sertol (darabouka), to play along with the Turkish drum machine. A dense nest of rhythmic complexity is the result. And to further connect to this music’s rich past, the ancient double reed zurna of Ahmet Özden and Yaşar Uçar’s European violin weave ancient melodies and incredible solos throughout. These musicians are some of the best in Istanbul, and all of these songs are first takes, recorded live with very little planning. Sepetçi essentially leads the band through these complex arrangements as they play them. In Istanbul, one may see Sepetçi playing for change on Istiklal Caddesi, the famous Turkish walking street at the center of the city. Or one may see him on one of the TV stations, playing Anatolian songs in his inimitable style. He’s even begun touring outside of Turkey—at Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, and at concerts in Italy, Beirut, and Israel. “I want to go to America.” He says. “Do they have mosques there?”

FOX FACE - 'SPOIL & DESTROY'

Formats
  • ZZZ151 - LP
    881970015115
Details

Witchy, twitchy and full of attitude, Fox Face is a fogswirling, moonlit night where nothing is as it seems. Realized and reckless, this eerie musical force would be as much at ease holding a seance on a stormy, nighttime beach as throwing a rager in a dark, beer-soaked basement bar. On the tongue-in-cheek Spoil + Destroy, the band’s first record for Dirtnap, the band alternates between Sabbath-y searing guitars, surf-rock and creeped-out, organ-laced sonic seances. Recorded by Kyle “Motor” Urban at MotorCo Studio in Madison, WI, using an all-analog 16-track recorder, the attitude hangs hard on the vocals of everyone throughout, echoing the spirit of Kathleen Hanna and Neighborhood Brats’ Jenny Angelillo. Lindsay DeGroot (lead guitarist and vocalist) leads this storm of sound, with bandmates Lydia Washechek (guitar, vocals), Mary Joy (bass, vocals) and Christopher Capelle (drums). DeGroot’s explicitly feminist lyrics are undeniably bolstered by nobullshit politics and inspired by The Book Of The Dead and The Craft. Spaghetti Western styles intermingle with punk & roll and goth, making for a bubbling pot of riledup, creeptastic tales, where the environs are trepidatious, dark and frustrating.

PENGUIN CAFE ORCHESTRA - 'UNION CAFE'

Formats
  • DPC098 - CD
    5060259350016
Details

Union Cafe turned out to be the last collection of new material the original PCO recorded, originally released 1993. This album retains the intimacy and charm of all previous works, featuring a recording of the electric Aeolian harp on Cadbury Hill, Somerset, and a piece dedicated to the memory of John Cage recorded at the Real World recording week in 1992. Union Cafe is a vigorous re-statement of traditional Penguin musical values. The African inheritance was again rearranged in Kora Kora; Venezuelan cuatro strums infused Lifeboat; the sound of the deep South of America was subtly hinted at in Nothing Really Blue.

SIMON JEFFES - 'PIANO MUSIC'

Details

Originally released posthumously on Zopf Records in 1998, this newly re-mastered and re-packaged edition of Piano Music is re-released in April 2011 to coincide with the re-releases of both Concert Program and Union Cafe on the new Penguin Cafe Label. 'Most of the pieces on this album are previously unreleased material found on Simon's tapes after his death in December 1997. Exceptions are 'Piano Music', which appeared on the Preludes Airs and Yodels compilation, and 'Kora Kora' and 'Silver Star', which were on the Union Cafe album. 'Lullaby' is a new piece completed by Simon but recorded after his death by friends and members of Penguin Cafe Orchestra. The other fourteen pieces were played and recorded by Simon at various times and places (some unknown). 'Shelter' and 'Cajun Piano' are sketches of pieces Simon planned to record for his next album, which would have also incuded 'Lullaby'.

PENGUIN CAFE - 'THE RED BOOK'

  • DPC104LP - LP

Details

VINYL BACK IN STOCKPenguin Cafe release their new album ‘The Red Book’ on 17th February 2014. The sophomore release from the freshly re-imagined Penguin Cafe is the culmination of two years work that has seen Arthur Jeffes - son of original composer and Penguin Cafe Orchestra founder Simon Jeffes - investigate whole new areas of sound and vibrancy, alongside his eclectic collection of musicians and characters, marking an ambitious extension from their debut ‘A Matter of Life’ (2011). The catalyst for the new recording came about when Jeffes worked on a project with the International Space Orchestra and NASA Ames in 2012, out of which came the pieces Aurora and 1420, which have since been beamed into space as part of NASA’s Kepler project. These touchstones marked a satellitic beginning for a new album, a collection of songs that would then return to earth to undertake a rich, cross-continental, musical journey.

PENGUIN CAFE - 'A MATTER OF LIFE'

Formats
  • DPC101 - CD
    5060259350009
Details

Penguin Cafe’s debut album, ‘A Matter of Life’, was released in February 2011 on the Editions Penguin Cafe label. The Penguin Cafe was Simon Jeffes’ dream-inspired creative universe - a wonderful and strange musical world that fell largely silent when he died aged 49 in 1997. Now, thirteen years after his death, his son Arthur is revisiting the Penguin Cafe – playing his father’s music and adding new pieces of his own. Arthur Jeffes has assembled a young band, a mix of personalities not unlike those that made up the original Penguin Cafe Orchestra, incorporating the music of the PCO, seasoned into a confident and redefined style, maintaining that quintessentially English sound but adding fresh material and a sense that they are evolving into something new and very much their own. The band is a loose collection of talent, including Neil Codling of Suede and, on percussion, Cass Browne of Gorillaz. ‘A Matter of Life’ is largely new material, including Harry Piers, which Arthur wrote for his father’s memorial service, and includes a guest appearance on ‘Landau’ by Kathryn Tickell on Northumbrian pipes.
