*VINYLREPRESS IN STOCK* Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds reissues and revives his debut album in form of a special remastered 10th Anniversary edition titled Eulogy For Evolution 2017 — available worldwide via Erased Tapes on August 25th. Following its initial release in 2007 and coinciding with Ólafur’s 30th birthday, label founder Robert Raths gifted the chance for this record to shine a second time. Eulogy For Evolution is a journey from birth to death, transporting the listener through life itself. Originally written as a teenager, the record has now been restored with the help of his friends, remixed by Ólafur himself and remastered by Nils Frahm. The cover art was redesigned and enhanced by Torsten Posselt at FELD using the original photographs taken by Stuart Bailes during a trip to Ólafur’s home in Iceland in 2007. To experience the record in the present day is not only to experience the past, but also the sheer timelessness and relevance of these compositions, and the ambition Ólafur has had from the very beginning. “Fast forward 10 years, our relationships and knowledge in sound have matured, but you can still hear this urgency in Óli’s songs that caught my ears to begin with”, states Robert Raths.

KLAUS JOYNSON & THE TYPE 40 - 'NEW ADVENTURES IN TIME & SPACE 12 SONGS FOR 12 DOCTORS'

Formats
  • KXCD001 - CD

Details

23rd of November 1963 - the debut of a British television icon. 24th of November 2017 - the release of a conceptual musical tribute to that icon. 54 years and one day... the 55th year of Doctor Who. Inspired by the inspired work of The Duckworth Lewis Method (and various other artists down the years, such as Vivian Stanshall, The Human League and Pink Floyd), Klaus Joynson thought about creating a similarly unique concept album. Cricket was taken. As were Science Fiction, Sorrow and Bells that are Tubular. So naturally he turned to his biggest obsession: Doctor Who - the perfect touchstone to document the past 50-odd years of British music. So Klaus wrote and performed a Doctor Who concept album. 12 songs for 12 Doctors, each done in the British musical style of that Doctor's time. Except it somehow expanded to 14 - got to have the intro and the outro! (In fact, with four short companion pieces hidden in there, it's really 18) Representing 12 eras in just 12 songs presented challenges. Some choices were easy: Dawn of British Beat for the Black & White days of William Hartnell (Track 2: "Verity & Delia")... as the show embraced colour television and capes the Jon Pertwee period just had to be Glam Rock Glitterstompf (Track 4: "Five Rounds Rapid")... with his then companions dressed like Joanne Catherall and Susan Sulley it was Electro-Pop for Peter Davison's tenure (Track 6: "Soap Opera")... and only Trip-Hop could soundtrack the existential angst of Paul McGann's iteration (Track 9: "Vancouver") Other periods were less obvious: Both Prog Rock *and* Punk Rock for the longest serving Doctor, Tom Baker (Track 5: "Walking In Eternity")... JAMC fuelled Indie-Noise for Scottish Sylvester McCoy (Track 8: "Masterplan")... and so on, through Psychedelia, Brit-Pop, Grime, Landfill Indie, NWOBHM... right up to the present day, with a song for Peter Capaldi inspired by two things he’s done in the past (Track 13: The X-Rated "Drunk In Time") Dense, even for a concept album, New Adventures in Time and Space contains many nerdy musical and televisual references, philosophical conjunctions and basic dumb jokes. It will make you wonder where that musical reference is taken from, what episode of Doctor Who that’s about... and why these fools spent so long making the thing in the first place - and you can dance to it. With the future now agreeably female, this could be seen as the culmination of an era. Twelve times the Doctor was a man, celebrated in 12+ songs. People who like to overthink things made this. We hope you like to overlisten. RIYL: Cult TV, Novelty Bands, British Pop and Rock

With their respective tongues in their respective cheeks, Sami Perez, Hannah Valente, Eva Treadway, and Sinclair Riley of The She’s proudly present their second album All Female Rock And Roll Quartet. This time band is behind the wheel, self-producing with counsel and encouragement from tUne-Yards’ Merrill Garbus. Lyrically, the band delivers a more mature, grounded, and self-aware album than ever before. Their storytelling is cathartic and relatable. Across twelve tracks, they examine themes of guilt, heartbreak, disappointment, frustration, yearning, and acceptance, effortlessly balancing lyrical sophistication and bluntness, like in “Death Dreams” when Perez plainly asserts “hate how you treat the air like you’ll find your breath in it somewhere.” Tonally, this album strays a bit from earlier releases. Drawing inspiration from Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, Sleater-Kinney, and tUne-Yards, the bands have officially leveled up in terms of sonic experimentation and eccentricity. From the blown-out wall of blistering guitars in “Ashes”, to the trance-inducing ebb and flow of the rhythm section in “Sorry”, to the spacious, angelic build up of vocal, guitars, and percussion in “Holly”, this offers up a plentiful spread of compelling tones and arrangements for listeners to lose themselves in. This album is not what long time fans of The She’s might expect— they’ve been through some stuff since their last release. Sonically raw, this is a vulnerable and honest depiction of who the band is now, boasting a new level of confidence and creativity in songwriting, storytelling, and musicianship, willing to let moments go unresolved and let loose ends hang with intention and certainty.

BED WETTIN' BAD BOYS - 'ROT'

Look, there isn’t any way to write this without commenting on the name Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys. We’re not gonna bring ourselves to it, but with all measures of certainty, you are. You’re casting aspersions on their name, maybe formulating in your mind what they might sound like, and wondering why Agitated / RIP Society is bringing them to your attention. Have they no shame, you thought. Do they want to sell records and attract fans, you ponder. Thing is, they’ve heard it already. They own it, and they’ve done so since 2009. Save your opinions. It’s time to get that sentiment stricken from the slate, because we’re here to talk about their music, which is bold, passionate, ear-splitting rock & roll, performed with tremendous heart and determination. It’s a barrier of entry for those unable or unwilling to look past the surface. Rot is the name of the second full-length from Sydney’s Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys. Hang it on regional slang (“My mum used to say, ‘what a load of rot’ instead of ‘what a load of shit,’” mentions guitarist Joe Sukit), or pin it to the way they perceive themselves as veritable dinosaurs of their local scene, set adrift to crumble on their love for classic rock and lack of fashionable ideas. Maybe even put it in the novelty canon of “Rock, Rot & Rule.” Or why not add a fourth R, because this thing rips. Those guitars are hoisted in defiance of cool, and are loud enough to break your concentration and enforce an active listening experience. Musically, Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys haven’t budged an inch from their debut full length (2013’s Ready for Boredom, released on bassist Nic Warnock’s R.I.P Society label). Nor should they have; they are in the (sporadic) business of writing durable, sentiment-stirring riffs, the kind that lifted the first stirrings of punk in England (see Eddie and the Hot Rods, maybe), or of the direction of power-pop that was more focused on writing worldbeaters than fixing its hair (look at the Replacements, perhaps, or Mission of Burma). Not one drop of power is wasted or lost here; raw emotions push through these tracks in songs about love, about watching the world turn, about casting off distractions and focusing on the need for human connection. We may not have much time left to say these things, before we begin to rot. This is their chance. Might be your chance as well.

ADULT - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Details

ADULT. have been stalwarts of national independent music for almost two decades, releasing their perfectionist hybrid of darkwave and synth-pop with respected labels Thrill Jockey, Kill Rock Stars, Ghostly International and, most recently, Mute. The soundscapes this Detroit duo sculpts by synthesizer stabs and sparse drum machine rhythm are icy, dense and precise. This release showcases the group in rare form, complete with the totally unexpected and kind of jarring sound of raucous audience laughter in place of typical applause as the intro as well as a light audible fuzz created by the third member of the group that night, their fog machine ;) Best of all, two of the tracks, Misshaped and Does the Body Know?, make their premiere on this release. ADULT. have outlasted any number of micro-electronic music scenes with whom they could have been grouped and, with their live show down to a science, prove that they will be worth a damn for a long time coming.

KID CONGO & THE PINK MONKEY BIRDS - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Details

Known for his work with The Gun Club, The Cramps and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Kid Congo and his band, The Pink Monkey Birds, have carved out a place for themselves in the competitive world of underground music by taking the building blocks of primeval rock and roll and pushing them to their furthest conceivable limits. This philosophy will undoubtedly strike a chord in fans of foundational punk music (and especially Ramones fans). The live recording from the Third Man Blue Room features two banger tracks — “Psychic Future” and “La Araña” — hot off their 2016 album La Araña Es La Vida on In The Red Records. Compared to the studio tracks, these live recordings are just slightly faster, a bit tidier and defi nitely more urgent. The shining star has gotta be the rhythm section, especially on “La Araña”, which belts out an addictive thump from start to fi nish.

DUDE YORK - 'HALFTIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS'

Formats
  • HARCD102 - CD

Details

The holidays are weird, man. Ostensibly, they’re about family and fun and food and festivities, but more often they portend arguing with your family about politics- and that mental dance you have to do where you’re like “Should I get Trevor a gift even though my funds are dwindling and I’m not even sure if he’s going to get me one in return so this could end up being a whole awkward thing???” The reality of the holidays lies somewhere more liminal, in the space between joy and depression, between excitement and boredom, between “peace on earth and goodwill toward men” and “I think I might murder my entire family.” So who better to teach us the true reason for the season than Dude York, a band whose music so often seems to exist in an in-between space of their own? Dude York are funny and serious and earnest and deeply ironic all at the same time. The three friends who comprise the band—Peter Richards (guitar, vocals), Claire England (bass, vocals) and Andrew Hall (drums, vocals)—have spent their four years together applying their particular Dude York-ian sensibility to topics like mental health, breakups, and the power of art and friendship. Now they’ve returned with Halftime for the Holidays to pop some chestnuts right on your fire and tackle their most poignant theme yet; THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR. Halftime for the Holidays is a holiday record for how the holidays actually feel. Tracks like “Takin’ Care of Christmas” (it’s exactly what you think it is) and “Jingle Bells Rock” (it’s not) deliver the requisite tacky cheer. “Greatest Gift is You” and “My Favorite Part (Of This Time of Year)” soar like the greatest pop-punk love songs, with the added benefit of CHRISTMAS. And songs like “Long Distance Christmas” and “Break Up Holiday” testify to the loneliness that they can spring on you without warning. It’s a record that manages to wrap the strangeness of sleeping in your childhood twin bed and the soft wonder of waking up to snow into one delightful white elephant present that you won’t re-gift. Halftime for the Holidays is self-consciously goofy, but refreshing in its willingness to tackle the misery and joy of the season with equal force. So deck the halls, engage in a regrettable make out session underneath the mistletoe, and rest assured that no matter what kind of reindeer games the universe is playing with you this year, Dude York has you covered.

THE SOAP OPERA - 'READY TO HATCH'

Formats
  • AMP119V - LP
Details

Ample Play would like to introduce The Soap Opera. Always the different kids of Western France, comprising of members of Sudden Death of Stars and the Spadassins, they consist of a cape crusading poet, a secondhand bookseller, a bespectacled engineer and a level-headed drummer. The result is great indie pop reminiscent of Arthur Lee's Love of the 1960s and the C86 sound of the 80s, with touches of the Brazilian Tropical in places. The band have known each other as friends for years, hanging out at the same gigs for years and dealing with each other’s eccentricities. Here the 11 tracks fall into place, sometimes almost quaint, always poetic, slightly sad, yet moving forward and uplifting. Here is a group who aren’t afraid to make a hip shaking pop song either. With a cult following on the continent, they have played all the venues from alleyways in Bordeaux to theatres in Strasbourg. They cross the Channel for their first UK show at The Windmill on 2/11/2017 and interviews. A tour will follow in early 2018.

THE SLOWEST LIFT - 'S/T'

Formats
  • VHF144 - LP
    783881014419
Details

The debut release by The Slowest Lift (Sophie Cooper and Julian Bradley) presents a new chapter in the long-running tradition of radical English music duos. Originally formed via a commission from the Supernormal Festival, Cooper (an accomplished solo performer and collaborator) and Bradley (from frequent VHF delinquents Vibracathedral Orchestra) play a kind of gentle postindustrial psychedelia, with Cooper’s lovely vocals floating over a collage of live and electronic performances. The songs are a blend of straightforward performance and eccentric bricolage, with rude electronic interjections sitting comfortably alongside delicate guitar and keyboard melodies. Zoviet France-like low-fi atmospherics compete with Cooper’s voice for air on tracks like “Crystal Fracture” and “Hi From The Skyline Swim,” while the duo’s surprising cover of Duran Duran’s “The Chauffeur” deep on side two sneaks in perfectly, a mini-pop music drama reimagined as pure hallucination.

PANDIT PRAN NATH - 'THE RAGA CYCLE, PALACE THEATRE, PARIS 1972 VOL: 2'

Formats
  • SMM006 - 2xLPs
    655035110615
Details

“The raga cycle given by Pandit Pran Nath at the Palace Theater in Paris 1972 was the first time a Master Indian Classical Vocalist had presented three consecutive days of ragas sung at the appropriate times of day, giving the Western audience insight into the characteristics that inform the moods and atmospheres of evening, afternoon, and morning ragas. “The recording here is from the Saturday, May 27, 1972 afternoon concert and features Raagini Bheempalasi and Raag Puriya Dhanaashree. This is the Maestro at the very summit of his creative and vocal powers. His inspiration merged with his excitement of being in Paris and added to the uniqueness of these performances. As he guided his ragas at an unhurried pace with a surety and command of the musical language, details emerge in the music so profound that new delights continue to surface. “Pandit Pran Nath was born in 1918 in Lahore, India which was to become Pakistan. He was one of the foremost disciples of the legendary singer, Ustad Abdul Waheed Khan, Sahib of Kirana. Khan Sahib was known for his long extended renditions of ragas in the melodic Kirana style, often lasting hours. His knowledge of raga science was unparalleled, allowing him to unveil endless permutations and combinations of phrases. Pandit Pran Nath absorbed this knowledge of raga from his Guru, building on these majestic forms in a unique and inimitable way. Pran Nath’s rich vocal quality and imaginative renditions of well-known ragas singled him out as one of the greatest masters in the history of Indian Classical Music. “Pan Nath’s music is ancient and modern, full of fresh flights of imagination. It is no wonder that his numerous performances in the West attracted devotees and students. Besides La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela, he instructed musicians of the American avant garde, including Jon Hassell, Lee Konitz, Allaudin Mathieu, Charlemagne Palsestine, Sufi Pir, Shabda Kahn and many others. His impact on contemporary music continues to grow.” —Terry Riley

“The South will never rise again,” Jacky Cougar Abok intones in a manner that suggests he is looking straight into your eyeballs while singing the opening track on Des Demonas’ debut album on In The Red Records. His hand may be around your neck as well! Sounding like The Last Poets acid tripping to ’60s Sunset Strip, the band drags you on a wild ride of fuzzy guitars and swirling Farfisa organ, while the bass and drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain. And that’s just the first song! The band hails from Washington, DC, and have been denizens of the byways and highways of the city’s musical underground for years. Jacky Cougar Abok is the six-footfive-inch tall Kenyan punk singer who has drummed with Thee Lolitas and Foul Swoops. Guitarist Mark Cisneros has bent strings with Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds, Deathfix, and Medications, and has pounded the traps for The Make-Up and Benjy Ferree, the latter alongside organist Paul Vivari. Joe Halladay (Citygoats) on bass and Ryan Hicks (Suns Of Guns) on drums round out this squared circle of sight and sound. The songs on this album range from Nuggets-style snottiness on “Tuff Turf,” to the brash warnings of “Liez” (“Lies… only seem to matter if you never wise up”), to the stomper “Psychedelic Soldier” and cool psycho creeper “Say You Tried,” to the hard boiled ’70s punk of Swahilisung “Golden Eggs.” When Abok sings “There are no vampires in Africa,” it may be a warning. It may be a fact. Or it may be a whole lot of unrelenting scuzzy fun. Dig the Des Demonas. Play it loud. Twist your wig. —Kid Congo Powers
