One of the most popular and successful underground bands of the early- / mid-’90s, California’s Jawbreaker was comprised of Blake Schwarzenbach (guitar and vocals), Chris Bauermeister (bass) and Adam Pfahler (drums). The band melded raw vocals, a driving rhythm section and grinding guitar with complex song structures and literary lyrics, forging a distinctive style that has since, along with Schwarzenbach’s subsequent band Jets to Brazil, influenced a generation of independent music. By the end of 1993, Jawbreaker was in full stride. The band had completed a full US tour in the summer, played several shows that October with Nirvana, and was attracting significant major label attention. 24 Hour Revenge Therapy, released in early 1994, was Jawbreaker’s third album. After the more “progressive” Bivouac, the trio had returned to a straightforward, poppier sound, and the resulting full-length is widely regarded as their best. The bulk of the recording was done by noted independent producer Steve Albini (though it is officially credited to Albini’s cat, Fluss). Following the mainstream success of fellow Californians Green Day and Rancid, Jawbreaker decided to sign with DGC. They released a final studio album, Dear You, before calling it quits in 1996. A feature-length documentary on the band is currently in the works.

CHARLES HOWL - 'SIR VICES'

Formats
  • AMPLA095LP - LP

Details

*REPRESS ALERT* Today we introduce Charles Howl, a London-based brit-psyche group with a thrillingly melodic sound. Charles Howl release their debut album ‘Sir Vices’ with a dozen tracks that deliver. Comprised of Charles Howl & Bobby Voltaire (both of The Proper Ornaments) they elected to record at Syke Lane's warehouse studio on the outskirts of Leeds, utilizing the foggy and remote atmosphere. Locked away Howl honed his songwriting, and production skills, slowly bringing in a team of friends, including Chris Hicks (Talons) on bass and Wesley Patrick Gonzalez (Let’s Wrestle), who laid down a lead line on track 5 while round for a cup of tea. As some of the last children of the ‘80s and with a britpop upbringing, it’s no wonder Charles Howl has produced an album that sounds like The Modern Lovers channeling The Stone Roses while maintaining its contemporary charm. It makes for an album that is outward looking with tight rhythms tying down whirling guitars and lustrous textures bouncing off melodies. The band have already shared stages with the likes of Let’s Wrestle, Younghusband, Toy and Fidlar, set to head out on a run of European dates in March (London show Shacklewell Arms 13th February). “CHARLES HOWL floor filler to big top filler, from sweaty club shows, fashion parties to festival stages, they always deliver, its sonic attack with soul, one of my favourite bookings“ Sean McLusky THE 1-2-3-4 FESTIVAL

“Deep breath: It’s been nearly 20 years of high marks for Mr. Lars Aldric Finberg, shocking as that calculation may be to make. Whether a basher in A-Frames and Thee Oh Sees, secret weapon of Wounded Lion, architect of Puberty and administrator of The Intelligence, his whirlwind presence has been a reliable one; that of an artist whom people look for and look toward. With outlets as varied (be they casual or all-consuming) as this, what, oh what, then prompted the emergence of a solo offering? In truth, In The Red’s outta-nowhere green-lighting of the concept sent Finberg’s brain bubbling toward Moonlight Over Bakersfield, a statement of entirely his own concoction… A truly swirling step from a guy who’s always movin’ diagonally. “Followers of Finberg’s recording history will immediately detect a plume of confidence around this album, an air that each successive offering has inched toward but now, at long last, has taken full bloom. It’s legitimately wonderful to witness Finberg ordering off the top shelf across every aspect of the album, recognizing this as a collection of experiments and bangers deserving of such treatment. This assuredness carries over thematically, as he tackles both personal and political obsessions with equal honesty and sophistication. “The favors called in for this occasion bolster the offering as a whole. Frequent collaborators now stew with notable heavies from La Luz and Melvins / Big Business, creating Finberg’s Whole New Sound. The great Mikal Cronin even guests on sax, offering sophisticated bleat as needed. Ty Segall serves as Finberg’s main ally though, both at the controls and in performance. Previous valiant attempts aside, Moonlight Over Bakersfield marks Segall’s first truly great achievement as producer / engineer, as if a partnership with Finberg would result in anything less.” —Mitch Cardwell

F/i - 'SPACE MANTRA'

Formats
  • SORC1001 - LP
    0742832924344
Details

First time on vinyl for nearly 30 years for this classic slice of American space rock. Milwaukee's F/i have been an ongoing concern since 1981, pioneering a certain brand of experimental rock which encompasses elements of industrial and psychedelic space-rock sounds. Originally a purely electronic outfit heavily influenced by Throbbing Gristle and prolific in the underground tape scene, they made the transition to 'rock band' in the mid '80s, and for many, 1988's Space Mantra LP remains the high point. With fuzzed guitars, metronomic rhythms, swirling synths and occasionally bucolic forays into blissful acoustics, it's a masterful take on cosmic music during the Reagan years. It was previously only ever released on LP once by the famed RRRecords label - Sorcerer is proud to see it back in print as it was. Limited edition of 500 copies. Recommended for fans of: Hawkwind, Amon Duul, Causa Sui, Cluster.

DOG FACED HERMANS - 'HUMANS FLY'

Details

Sorcerer is pleased to announced the reissue of the very first LP by Scotland's Dog Faced Hermans, Humans Fly, from 1988. This presents the first time it's been available since its release nearly 30 years ago, and this edition features the two bonus tracks which were only available on the German version at the time. Dog Faced Hermans existed from the mid '80s until the mid '90s and released five studio albums and several live discs in their time. Touring internationally, often with their friends The Ex (whom DFH member Andy Moor has played with since), they formented a reputation for their dynamic live shows, uncompromising politics and inventive music. Heavily influenced by No Wave, free jazz and Brit post-punk, and aided by an eclectic array of instrumentation and singer Marion Coutts' scorching vocals, they cut their own musical path. This edition is fully remastered by the band from the original analogue tapes and comes in a limited edition of 600 copies. Recommended for fans of The Ex, Contortions, The Pop Group, The Fall.

FLYING SAUCER ATTACK - 'IN SEARCH OF SPACES'

Formats
  • VHF145 - 2xLPs
    783881014518
Details

First ever reissue and first time on vinyl for this unique Flying Saucer Attack live album, expanded with additional material and a new side four mix from Jim O’Rourke. Produced in collaboration with Dave Pearce / FSA and Bruce Russell (compiler of the original CD release for his Corpus Hermeticum label), featuring new artwork by Bruce Russell as well. While rightly known for the folk-influenced songs and spacey instrumentals of their proper albums, the briefly active live version of FSA unexpectedly delivered a blistering wave of electric sound. Recorded at various shows in 1994, In Search Of Spaces heaves with long passages of feedback guitar racket, broken up by sections of surging rock music. The live band focused almost exclusively on visceral, trebly guitar noise—which, while always a key element in their sound, was greeted by audiences with total mystification (and often disapproval). Following a few brief attempts to settle a lineup and play songs from their records, Dave Pearce / FSA abandoned live performance altogether, leaving behind this album (and the barely available P. A. Blues CDR) as the sole document of his in-person delivery. Originally compiled and released in 1996, this reissue adds several minutes of music back to the original program that had been edited out by FSA for being “too rock.” For side four, Jim O’Rourke revisited the original 1994 live tapes and has made a spooky and brooding new mix of music exclusive to this release.

HERON OBLIVIAN - 'THE CHAPEL'

Details

The Chapel was recorded live to analog tape at the Chapel in San Francisco on January 27th, 2017, capturing Heron Oblivion at peak stage powers and bookending nearly a year of performance and touring in support of their critically acclaimed self-titled debut for Sub Pop Records. The broad dynamics, beauty, noise and ferocious tangle of guitars that fans have come to love and expect from the band are all present, enhanced and oversized here by adrenaline, a hometown crowd and raw live energy. Featuring a fifty-one minute set of six songs from the debut album, The Chapel also has two new and previously unreleased tracks, including a smoldering eight minute cover version of Doug Sahm’s “At The Crossroads.” Engineers Chris Woodhouse (Thee Oh Sees, Fuzz) and Eric Bauer (Ty Segall, Heron Oblivion, White Fence) strike a perfect balance of bootleg in-the-red rawness and multi-track vintage analog fidelity to create a unique piece that fans will find essential as the band closes their first chapter and heads toward a new one with their second studio album for Sub Pop.

SOLEDAD BROTHERS - 'SUGAR AND SPICE'

Formats
  • TMR419 - 7"
Details

Out of the ashes of Toledo's Henry and June arose the mighty Soledad Brothers. This recording is the Soledad Brothers doing what they did best - houserockin' blues in full Midwestern malaise. This single was recorded in 1998 at Jack White's house on Ferdinand Street in southwest Detroit and was the band's debut release. As key players in a scene of like-minded minimalist garage groups, vocalist, guitarist and master of harmonica Johnny Walker and drummer/future Third Man Records co-founder Ben Swank, were playing shows in Detroit so often, it eventually just made sense for Ben to pay Jack rent and become his roommate. This single features Jack playing a metal snow shovel on the B-side, "Johnny's Death Letter".

FELLS - 'CLOSE YOUR EYES'

Formats
  • TMR420 - 7"
Details

Hailing from Tucson, AZ, The Fells were churning out high quality, catchy singles throughout the ‘90s with the same ferocity as well-known contemporaries the Mummies or New Bomb Turks. Their Italy Records single, which was the ninth 7” in the Fells’ discography, is one of their most heavy-hitting and finest. The A-side “Close Your Eyes” is practically bi-polar with all the pep, bop and swing that makes a single worth snatching up! The backstory of this recording is one totally reliant on chance, and almost didn’t happen. The Fells’ van broke down while on tour from Tucson and they were stranded at The Hentchmen’s house, aptly called the Hentch House. With time to kill, the group toted their gear over to their buddy Jack White’s house and recorded these two killer songs for later release on Italy Records. It notably features special guest Johnny Hentch of The Hentchmen on piano

THE DIRTY'S - 'IT AIN'T EASY'

Formats
  • TMR491 - 7"
Details

The Dirtys were a totally raw garage punk band originally from Port Huron, MI. Their energy, coupled with a sound somewhere between the Oblivians and the MC5, is what makes a live show worthwhile. Celebrated Detroit garage hero Mick Collins (Gories, Dirtbombs) played guitar on the A-side "It Ain't Easy," which was unsuccessfully pitched to the Detroit City Council as the new official anthem of Detroit. Italy Records was founded to release this single by these knuckleheads before the release of their debut LP on respected German label Crypt Records. For one reason or another, this Dirtys 7" actually ended up being Italy's second release. Regardless, it's as punk as it gets and demands your full time and attention

Rocket 455 is a Flamin’ Groovies-loving garage rock band formed in Detroit in 1992 after the breakup of local scene essentials The Nervo Beats. Although this was Rocket 455’s third single, it was the first that featured the new, longest and current line up, including founding member Marco Delicato back in the fold as well as Steve “Disco” Nawara from the Electric Six. This 7” was released on Devil’s Night in 1997 and is notable as the first record ever produced and released by Italy Records.

WHIRLWIND HEAT - 'GLAXEFUSION'

Formats
  • TMR493 - 7"
Details

Grand Rapids’ finest Whirlwind Heat is notable as Italy Records’ first foray into anything that could possibly be considered art-rock. Listening to their jams, you’d quickly get the feeling DEVO and Brainiac were spinning heavily on their turntables. On each track, the rhythm section is quick and jagged and vocals are hardly even human, interspersed with synth bursts. This single, Italy’s 12th release, was also recorded with Jack White in 2001 and began a partnership that lasts to this day, with WWH drummer Brad Holland working as Third Man’s in house video director and lead singer David Swanson accompanying Jack White on tour as his official photographer.

GREENHORNES - 'STAYED UP LAST NIGHT B/W SHADOW OF GRIEF'

Formats
  • TMR494 - 7"
Details

Although not technically a Detroit-based garage group, this Cincinnati band fit in as honorary Detroiters by the time this single was released. The Greenhornes were purveyors of period-perfect 1960s rock n roll a la the Pretty Things and the Kinks. Plus, they were immediately set apart by their grim reputation of touring in a ‘67 Cadillac hearse. This single was recorded at Jack White’s house in southwest Detroit right before the release of the Greenhornes’ debut LP and the b-side is a re-imagined version of one of their 2nd LP’s strongest tracks “Shadow of Grief”. Band members Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler would go on to be the rhythm section in the Raconteurs while Brian Olive would later join the Soledad Brothers and make serious contributions to Dr. John’s revered “Locked Down” album.

THE HENTCHMEN - 'HENTCH FORTH'

Formats
  • TMR421 - LP
Details

The Hentchmen played their first show on Halloween of 1992 and have still shown no signs of slowing down. They are noted as some of the earliest purveyors of Detroit-style garage rock. Over their lengthy lifespan, The Hentchmen have released 27 singles (about one each year!) and 8 full-length albums on groundbreaking garage rock labels Norton Records, Estrus Records, Get Hip Records and even a promotional release through Chevrolet. You cannot get more “Detroit” than that. To say “Hentch-Forth” is their best would be a lie, because whichever record you have spinning is the best! But this album serves as an excellent starting point into their vast, powerful discography. Hentch-Forth (1998) is the The Hentchmen’s only album that includes Jack White on bass. This extended edition includes the “Some Other Guy” single that also features Jack on guitar plus a couple phenomenal bonus tracks. There's a joke and a fun fact regarding this record that would have been all but lost over the decades. Italy Records and the artists included “with Jack White” on both the 7” and the 12” because they thought that it would look like one of those old British Invasion records that would have an old bluesman or rocker as a guest. And for all the White Stripes trivia-heads — The Hentchmen’s “Some Other Guy” and The White Stripes’ “Lets Shake Hands” were recorded AND released at the same time, before the world would know what hit them!

EARL PETERSON - 'BOOGIE BLUES B/W IN THE DARK'

Formats
  • TMR360 - 7"
    813547025272
Details

The label on this single hits the nail on the head — Michigan’s singing cowboy! Despite a very long 45-year career in country music as a promoter, radio station operator, artist and label owner, very little is known about Earl Peterson. In late 1952, he formed Nugget Records with his mother, basically as a means of self-releasing his music. While shopping his music down South, he met Sam Phillips and agreed to release his song on Sun Records in the spring of 1954. This bouncing, twangy single would prove to be a cult hit and original pressings still command a lofty price. As the first remotely contemporary country single on the label, Peterson’s single paved the way for Sun to later pivot into the country genre. From there, Peterson’s story becomes a bit murkier. He recorded the same song for Columbia in the fall of 1954, strangely disregarding his contractual agreements with Sun. He went on to release a couple more singles with Columbia and by the ‘60s, was holed up in rural central Michigan to run a radio station (WPLB) with his family.

CARL PERKINS - 'BLUE SUEDE SHOES B/W HONEY DON'T!'

Formats
  • TMR361 - 7"
    813547025289
Details

Carl Perkins was born into a sharecropper family in fertile northwestern Tennessee, separated from neighboring states Missouri and Kentucky by curvy bends of the Mississippi River. Even in his early days scouting talent, Sun Records founder Sam Phillips had it right when he met Perkins and declared with reverence “this is one of the world’s greatest plow-hands." Carl Perkins was a proud country kid. With Sun Records, Perkins released eight singles and one studio album, but his recording legacy is often undeservedly simplified to this singular, million-selling 7" record. Originally released in February 1956, "Blue Suede Shoes" b/w '"Honey, Don’t" is a rock and roll standard and critically praised as one of the first massive blockbusters of its kind. It walks down the road forged by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Ike Turner, Bill Haley, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley to fuse elements of blues, country, pop and gospel in a completely new direction. Though Elvis Presley’s cover would cement the song’s status as a standard, Carl Perkins owes a good deal to Elvis for his name recognition and success as an artist. With Elvis’s cover of “Blue Suede Shoes” recorded and ready to release at the same time as Perkins’ original version, Presley requested that his major label distribution hold back his cover single until the original single sold one million copies, purely out of loyalty and consideration for his friend Perkins.

JOHNNY POWERS - 'WITH YOUR LOVE, WITH YOUR KISS B/W BE MINE ALL MINE'

Formats
  • TMR362 - 7"
    813547025296
Details

Almost all of Sun Records’ early rock and roll artists hailed from the South. The one exception in these formative years was Detroit native John Pavlik, better known as Johnny Powers. Releasing his first songs with the fantastic Detroit label Fortune Records, Powers was determined to be signed to Sun Records after wearing out his copies of Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley singles. His sole release on Sun titled “With Your Love, With Your Kiss” b/w “Be Mine, All Mine” is a highly collectible piece in the Sun catalog. The A-side is powerful and intense, with popping snare, blaring saxophone in the bridge and an impassioned Powers wailing all over the track. The B-side is more of a boogie rocker with an absolutely unforgettable falsetto vocal melody in each post-chorus. After Fortune and Sun, Powers went on to release records with Motown Records, certainly the only artist to record for all three wildly diverse labels. This nugget of early rock history is not to be missed.

There’s no better way to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of your best record than playing it in full, twenty-nine nights in a row. Hailing from Tokyo, beloved psych-doom shredders Boris performed their critically acclaimed album PINK in full, live in the Blue Room at Third Man Records. They recorded it direct to 8 track, 2” tape, providing an incredibly high fidelity document of an unforgettable night. Local weekly The Nashville Scene reviewed this show as “at least in that moment…by far the greatest show Third Man Records has hosted to date.” It’s hard to disagree. Atsuo, Takeshi and Wata filled the room with foreboding smoke, dark red light reflecting off of the blue walls and, to this date, was our loudest performance yet. This is almost certainly the only time that we’ve handed out and required earplugs for every single audience member upon entry. And now you can keep the celebration of PINK going with the choicest tracks of the night – get this record!

EARTH - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Formats
  • TMR395 - LP

Details

The Blue Room at Third Man shook with the sludge-drone majesty of Olympia, Washington’s Earth. Anchored by wife-husband duo Adrienne Davies and Dylan Carlson, this band has an integral spot in American music by bringing a low-frequency uproar and six-string extremism to the forefront of the experimental, punk metal underground. More concisely, they are widely considered the pioneers of drone metal. The band built their reputation on widely respected albums, starting with Sub Pop and moving to current home Southern Lord. Using the device of repetition, the band disarms and transforms first impressions with a performance so plodding and insistent that each song is stretched to its limits. The set spanned their catalog with four first-class compositions, employing powerful guitar drones and Davies’ precise, slow-motion percussion swirling throughout.

PILE - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Details

Prominent members of the Boston music scene and post-rock specialists, Pile began as the brainchild (and solo project) of Rick Maguire in 2007. In the earliest incarnations, the songs were the broken bones of bigger ideas: the impassioned, ramshackle work of one dude with a momentous sense of riff and mood. In the time between then and now, the band has enjoyed a steady output and expanded to include Kris Kuss, Matt Connery, Matt Becker and, from time to time, Chappy Hull. This spring, their new critically-acclaimed LP A Hairshirt of Purpose was given a rare 10/10 by The AV Club, citing the record is “still pushing the (rock music) form to its outermost limits," and fortunately, our live LP was recorded right after its release, capturing them at a distinctly creative peak and unparalleled energy. This record is somehow chilling and explosive - kicking off with their total jam “Baby Boy” and including a surprise Blonde Redhead cover. It stands shoulder to shoulder with the rest of their catalog and will no doubt remain a shining example of our live series for years to come.
