VARIOUS - 'HEED THE CALL!'

Details

Aotearoa. New Zealand, nineteen seventy something. Bottom of the South Pacific - the largest Maori and Polynesian population in the world and ... a nation wanting to groove. Approx 3 million people. Two islands, hot summers , muddy winters, one tv channel till 1975 and all radio was AM. Cantankerous (and sometimes not so sobre) Prime Minister Rob Muldoon was in his pomp, the economy was in the toilet, and rugby (a national sport and in many parts of NZ , a religion) was a mess played in a mud bath ... the people had to dance! A constant supply of international soul, funk, and disco releases were available for local issue through the major labels , but things got really interesting when local artists found their soul on vinyl. Colour, clothes and sex began seeping onto the dance floors, while back at home kids watching music clips on television were turning to their parents: “Is that a boy or a girl?” New Zealand would never be the same again. A new generation was taking over and they wanted to boogie. This new group of faces were taking to the dance floors. People like Mr Funky, people who’d stepped out in style and wanted to get down with their own bad self. A funky revolution was brewing with bands that’d been mired in the middle ground now swerving into sounds more suited to the disco than a rugby club social. Other bands were emerging from cabaret and had shifted from being the show to creating the show. These then are the songs that drove a country from black and white to technicolour, and being a scene born in total isolation it took turns that weren't heard anywhere else. This is funk, soul and disco as it would’ve sounded if Studio 54 had been set up within five minutes of a dairy farm, a rugby club and a marae, and if nothing else it finally let people to dance because they simply wanted to. Heed The Call! collects the best New Zealand material from the afrotastic days of 1973 to 1983. Artists like Mark Williams whose House For Sale became a sought after northern Soul single, The (three) Yandall Sisters (two of whom are pictured behind Mark WiIlliams on our cover), a teenage Tina Cross, Dalvanius & Prince Tui Teka, all became household names in NZ. The collection mines some overlooked nuggets from their respective catalogues alongside lesser known boogie cuzzins The Pink Family with their non-secular floor sizzler Don't Give Your Life Away, the gritty gospel soul of Sonia & Skee, The Johnny Rocco Band, Inbetweens, and The Totals. The Kaukau brothers were four fifths of Golden Harvest who hit the national charts with the number one I Need Your Love in 1978 which featured new addition 17 year old Karl Gordon fronting the band. Local 60s beat pioneer Larry Morris fresh out of the big house after a public LSD misdemeanour finds his groove on Who Do We Think We're Fooling. Funk dynamos Collision hail from Tokoroa, and in an earlier incarnation were known as The Shriek Machine, move to Australia on Dalvanius's insistence to record the showstopper You Can Dance. Early 70s Acid Rockers Ticket flaunt their funky flare(s) with their Vertigo single only release Mr Music (later covered by Collision) , and the windy city jazzmen The 1860 Band take form fitting self promoting t-shirts to the next level while re- interpreting Rita Jean Bodine's Thats The Kind Of Love * Compiled by Alan Perrott and John Baker (WHO?) * Double LP, with illustrated inner sleeves showcasing the sleeves of all the original LP releases * First re issue of Dalvanius & The Fascinations 12 inch disco mix of Voodoo Lady with Dal & the gals being backed by Tokoroa's finest Collision * THE 12 inch mix of Voodoo Lady is unique to the vinyl version - the CD's Voodoo Lady is the truncated 7 inch version * First time re issue on vinyl for all tracks * Liner notes by co compiler Alan Perrott based on interviews with actual participants in the recordings in black & white booklet with tasty pics and ephemera * Locating original copies of these records will 1:take a long time and 2: make you wish you'd won lotto * Limited to 1000 copies worldwide

HOWLIN RAIN - 'S/T'

Details

Never before issued on vinyl, Silver Current presents Howlin Rain’s selt-titled 2006 debut album, originally on CD only on Birdman Records! Formed in 2004 in San Francisco, the band features Ethan Miller (Comets On Fire, Heron Oblivion), John Moloney (shaman leader and percussionist for Boston’s Sunburned Hand Of The Man) and Ian Gradek (bassist, iron worker, banjo-picker and world traveler). For a group of musicians who spend most of their time playing napalmwrecked avant-rock or underground improv, this is an opportunity to downshift and ease into some classic good-time jams—some yin to the more experimental yang of their better known projects. They draw from the resonance of The Dead, The Allman Brothers, Richard Brautigan, Exuma, Terry Reid, Golden Earring, CSNY (as well as Neil Young and Crazy Horse), Bob Dylan, Blue Cheer, CCR, Simon and Garfunkel, Randy Holden, White Heaven, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Walsh and anyone who’s played piano on an album without actually knowing how to. They’re equal parts dust, groove, folk, rock, dirt, mercury, earth, beer, watermelon, the Eel River and the great land that surrounds it. Howlin Rain came together with the intention of making a good, old-fashioned, free-wheeling rock album with a bared soul and a body that hangs joy, hysteria and darkness on the same rambling bones. They play unfiltered music in all its grit and all its glory; music to beat the steering wheel of your van to or sing along with while drinking whiskey in the bathtub with your dog on a Saturday night.

1. Death Prayer In Heaven?s Orchard 2. Calling Lightening With A Scythe 3. Roll On The Rusted Days 4. The Hanging Heart 5. Show Business 6. Indians, Whores And Spanish Men Of God 7. In Sand And Dirt 8. The Firing Of The Midnight Rain

ARCHIE & THE BUNKERS - 'PLAY THE DAMNED'

Formats
  • ITR306 - 7"
Details

In The Red is proud to announce this brand new 7-inch EP from Cleveland, Ohio’s Archie & the Bunkers. The band consists of teenage brothers Emmett (drums/vocals) and Cullen O’Conner (organ/vocals) who have been pounding out their stripped-down brand of crazed rock ‘n’ roll since 2014. Their live shows have to be seen to be believed. Anyone who has seen them live or is familiar with their previous releases on Smog Veil, Dirty Water and Norton knows these guys are the real deal and they aren’t messing around. In The Red HQ are of the firm belief that The Damned are one of the greatest rock n’roll bands of all time. It turns out Archie & the Bunkers share this feeling and have been known to cover the Damned frequently and have performed entire sets of their music. They even jammed with the band on their last US tour, having a better memory of how some of their early material went than the men who wrote it! Therefore ITR is happy that the band have agreed to cover some of their favorite Damned selections, doing them in their own frantic, bare bones style. Recorded by Jim Diamond in Detroit, the results here are glorious!

ARNDALES - 'SHOPS'

Formats
  • ITR321 - LP
    759718532111
Details

Arndales hail from the Three Counties (Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire) area of England, a hinterland bolted on to North London. Members of the band have also performed with Country Teasers, Art Brut, Collapsed Lung, Thrilled Skinny and others. They describe their music as “Three Counties Ug-Rock.” On their new album they have taken inspiration from the rich world of retail jargon. The main source of lyrical inspiration was a shared Google Doc where friends could deposit the latest nuggets of retail gobbledygook they’d heard at work. Opening track “Prestige Pricing” is named after the practice of deliberately inflating the price of a product to indicate it’s prestigious status. “Dark Store” takes its name from the customer-free supermarkets used to fulfill online shopping orders. Album closer “Theme from A Big 10-8 Place” is a cover of the Negativland song, transferring the narrative from the Bay Area to mid Bedfordshire, England.

What happens when you put King Khan and Sean Wood from The Spits together? The results are Louder Than Death aka LTD. This 12-inch is the first collaboration between the two titans of garage-punk and the results are as bonkers as you’d hope. Sci-fi inspired punk meets weirdo synth damage that’s as deranged and dumb as you’d hope. Since the recording of this debut release the band have added Aggy and Looch from the Magnetix to the line up and recorded an album (out later this year on In The Red) of blistering, whacked-out punk rock that is guaranteed to blow minds. Watch for the band on tour!

YOUNG GUV - '2 SAD 2 FUNK'

Formats
  • LSSN059 - LP
Details

Nothing is ever as it seems with Young Guv, but it always feels good. At first glance cloaked in a bold, ready-made distance, 2 Sad 2 Funk reveals itself over time to be an emotional, perfectly crafted, detourned pop record. Young Guv is the creation of Toronto-based auteur Ben Cook, an artist with over a decade playing guitar and singing in hardcore punk groups and a long discography of Young Governing. On 2 Sad 2 Funk, Guv pushes the power pop motif to its natural, 21st post-structuralist conclusion: it’s an album ridden with the cultural noise that bleeds through human interaction, distorting relationships and eroding that great Luv you thought you had. Audibly referencing everything from classic guitar pop The Toms or Dwight Twilley through Prince-ian ecstacies to a buried, trancegressive House music, the attention deficit belies a modern age plagued by distraction and performance anxieties. These days, the heart can break in new ways. Perhaps Young Guv isn’t trying to soundtrack this breakdown in our relationship to Luv, but there’s something unmistakably broken down underneath these songs’ palette of fuzzy synths, crisp snare cracks and emotionally synthesized vocals. Throughout 2 Sad 2 Funk, Cook’s approach is to contextualise these modern unlove songs within a bedrock of collaged sounds, TV and Radio adverts, studio out-takes and warped experiments. The effect is hallucinogenic and serves to blow up his pop songs to epic, life-affirming proportions. The title-track slides into your life like a precautious Luv-er, a romantically doomed, electro-funk ballad that strikes the perfect balance between melancholy and creepiness. It feels good as long as you don’t attempt to decode the anxiety beneath it. Stand-out Stand In The Way is one of the most ecstatic heartbreaks Cook has ever committed to tape, a chorus that puts the listener in an open-top sports car speeding down an ocean highway, the sun bleaching out the pain, but not completely. Instrumentals like St. Clair provide the bridges, like a club music thumping in the background to your latest drama, while a track like You’ve Been Acting Strange Lately invokes a pantomime response in the listener: over a slinky, ecstatic 90s house beat Guv is “only questioning your love, because you’ve been acting strange lately” – we want to shake Guv and say “they’re just not that into you” but also, the sadist in the listener wants to let him suffer and keep writing these transgressive pop songs. 2 Sad 2 Funk constructs a hyper-reality of commerce, pop references and ecstasies that reveal an addictive, hyperactive emotional underneath it. Young Guv seems removed from the picture but really he’s there a little too much for his own good. 2 Sad 2 Funk is not what you thought at first, but it feels good, whatever it is.
