Details

Reissue of 1981’s classic first recording by legendary San Francisco band Crucifix. This EP’s raw Sabbath-fueled punk, Shaggs-like musicianship and honest teenage angst provoked one reviewer at the time to write, “it makes you feel like going out and bludgeoning an old lady to death.” Recorded at Tom Mallon Studios in San Francisco in 1981, and originally released on Universal Records, this long out of print 5 track EP contains the songs Capitulation, Permanently Damaged, Religion Kills, and Brazen Hell, as well as the band’s defining anthem of the period, You’re Too Old. Sourced from the original 2 track masters.

CRUCIFIX - 'NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR'

Formats
  • KUS03 - 7"
    647603400273
Details

Originally released in 1982 on the band’s own Freak records, this classic single was a massive musical leap for Crucifix, providing a link between the initial self titled 12” EP and the Dehumanization LP, an undeniable classic of Reagan era hardcore political punk. Nineteen eighty-four is a lo-fi, live-in-studio 2 track recording capturing the band at full intensity, an onslaught of volume and distortion. This recording marked Crucifix’s move into the area of political engagement through message, graphics, and a DIY ethos. In the spirit of the original Freak release, this reissue includes a remake of the patch that was silkscreened by the band for the first pressing in 1982.

Presenting fuck’s first new record in over ten years, the band, on Vampire Blues! In the mid-’90s to the early aughts, fuck was releasing a new record every other year and touring constantly while jumping from label to label. Then, with nary a warning, they up and disappeared. No note, no nothing. Skip forward a generation and it’s revealed that they’ve been spending all these years meticulously sculpting the most impressive album of their career. Recorded in fits and starts and all over the map, from basic tracks in San Francisco to overdubs in Italy and mixing in Memphis, the band comes through with a surprisingly cohesive sound; though, like their six previous studio albums, the genrebending and boundary-pushing song-writing continues. Any lesser band would have destroyed all sense of spontaneity going this route; not fuck. The casual off-thecuff attitude remains, but now with added depth and clarity. The highs got higher, the hard hits harder. And it only took ten years!

HARLAN T. BOBO - 'A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE'

Once the intro to opener “Human” gives way to its fully-realized sonic purpose, it’s obvious that Harlan T. Bobo’s fourth proper album, A History of Violence, is quite different from his previous body of work. The classic historical emotional heft of a songwriter trying to make sense of life’s chaos—think mid-’70s Lou Reed, especially Coney Island Baby—is a thread running through the album’s mid-tempo tracks like “Human” and the miniature literary tragedy that is “Nadine.” The punchier tracks on the album, like “Spiders,” conjure very early Green On Red, what X’s mid-’80s output could have been, or even the roots-rock tendencies of overlooked genius Cass McCombs. This album highlights Bobo’s whiskey-and-cigarette-informed vocal style, and on the more intimate tracks, a distorted ear candy that warbles into increasingly sunken, uncomfortable places, like that of the songwriter with which comparisons have followed Bobo throughout his career: the late Leonard Cohen. But there is a richer canvas on which to work this time out, not to mention a decidedly heavier and darker one. The album was recorded in Memphis with Doug Easley, who has previously worked with Cat Power, Pavement, Wilco, Sonic Youth, Jon Spencer, and Jeff Buckley. Bobo also brought in Steve Selvidge (The Hold Steady, Bash & Pop) on bass and Jeff “Bunny” Dutton (Action Family) on guitar, along with regular contributors Jeff Bouck (Polyphonic Spree) and Brendan Spangler (Viva l’American Death Ray). The result is a naturally dynamic album that seems equally at home with howling guitars and heavy bass lines as it does with haunting piano and humble pleas. A History Of Violence is Bobo’s most complex—and complete—album to date.

Philly-based musician Rosali ( Long Hots, Wandering Shade) wrote the songs for her second album, Trouble Anyway, seeking empowerment by sharing openly on love, power, aging, suffering, confusion, self-doubt, and anger. The result is a full-bodied record that is at once sweeping and intimate—a vulnerable and powerful exploration of emotional narratives. With a band including Rosali’s close friends Charlie Hall (War On Drugs), Paul Sukeena (Angel Olsen), Mary Lattimore, Mike Polizze (Purling Hiss), Nathan Bowles (Steve Gunn, Black Twig Pickers) and Dan Provenzano (Purling Hiss, Writhing Squares), this album is a cohesive collection of lush, intimate rock songs, featuring Rosali’s warm, natural vocals and powerful riffing and rhythm guitar. “Members of The War on Drugs and Purling Hiss, as well as Mary Lattimore and Nathan Bowles, join [Rosali] Middleman on Trouble Anyway, which expands Rosali’s sound with a band attuned to her shuffling guitar rhythms and introspective shifts of emotion. It’s the kind of record best heard in the winding narrative of night, as casual conversations and cheap bottles of wine gradually turn deeper, darker notes.” —NPR “I first fell in love with Rosali’s songs for this reason, the way her work takes you straight to that brave and big-hearted dream within songwriting. Every song stands strongly as it’s very own world, well-worn by the history of the underground but accessible as daylight.” —Meg Baird, Spring 2018
