Details
From the first bars of the opener “Glow Out Of Time”, Orango pull no punches and let you know exactly what Evergreens is all about: grit, groove and melody. Or is it? Taking a sideways step from the album’s predecessor The Mules of Nana, Evergreens eschews some of the polish, opting for a more stripped-down, harder-rocking sound, filled out by the band’s signature vocal harmonies. It also shows Orango at their most adventurous, as evinced by the album’s title track and closer, the 16-minute epic “Evergreen”. This track alone is worth the admission price; flutes, organ, adventure-inspiring bass runs that could be approved by Iron Maiden, melancholy and contemplation giving way to ecstasy. You thought you knew Orango?Orango’s confident brew of good ol’ southern rock, west coast style vocal harmonies and an amazing live energy, has been fine tuned with every album, peaking with the recording of their new album, Evergreens. The music was recorded purely out of internal inspiration; playing for the love of music in itself, and not compromising on their true affection for the genre´s influencers. Evergreens is released on green vinyl in gatefold sleeve , CD and digital.

TANZANIA ALBINISM COLLECTIVE - 'WHITE AFRICAN POWER (WE LIVE IN DANGER) / STIGMA EVERYWHERE'
Formats
TMR563 - 7"
Details
Ukerewe is the largest inland island in Africa and can only be reached by an overpacked four-hour ferry ride on Lake Victoria. It is a place so remote that historically people often traveled there to abandon their albino children, based on the regional belief that they are in some way “demonic.” Eighteen members of the Standing Voice community volunteered for their first ever songwriting workshop, ranging in age from 24 to 57. But even among the willing, singing-out proved difficult, considering the group routinely avoided eye contact, rarely spoke above a whisper, and were unaccustomed to dancing. Produced by Grammy-winner Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Zomba Prison Project, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott), the Tanzania Albinism Collective actively pushes the boundaries of what is considered Eastern African and “world music,” while continuing to attract greater awareness and confront the dangers that the collective face daily due to prejudice and persecution at home. THE MARKED MEN - 'ON THE OTHER SIDE'
Formats
ZZZ155 - LP
881970015511
Details
On The Other Side collects all non-album tracks released by The Marked Men, originally released in the period between 2003 and 2010 on labels such as Dirtnap, Swami, No Idea, Shit Sandwich, and Mortville, plus two never-before-heard unreleased tracks from deep in the vault. It’s hard to believe that it’s been close to fifteen years since Dirtnap first released a Marked Men record. Since then, the label has done close to twenty releases by the band member’s various bands (Marked Men, Radioactivity, High Tension Wires, Potential Johns, Mind Spiders). Counting the releases Mark Ryan and / or Jeff Burke have had a hand in recording, that number goes even higher. It’s a relationship that continues to this day; if there is / has been a “flagship band” for the label, Marked Men and their various offshoots are it. Although they continue to play a handful of shows each year, the band hasn’t released any new material since 2009 (the last album came out in 2008), and they have no plans to do so, so this compilation is as close to a new album as one is going to get. The band’s affinity for fast, choppy power chords and manic energy is in evidence here, as the band stretches its legs throughout these solid closing credits and shows why they were one of the leaders of a sound that has never gone (or will go) out of style.

THIS IS THE KIT - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'
Formats
TMR568 - 7"
Details
Kate Stables has been recording and releasing music as This Is The Kit since 2005. In May of 2018, Kate and her band took some time off from their busy tour schedule supporting The National and treated us to a very intimate and special performance. Stables' uniquely-textured voice possesses a tone that quietly reels you in, and -- following the tradition of exquisitely strange troubadours like Karen Dalton, Will Oldham, or Robert Wyatt -- is simply arresting.

BILL CALLAHAN - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'
Formats
TMR531 - LP
813547026637
Details
Bill Callahan, fka Smog, is simultaneously a staple of strange American country, lo-fi, folk and independent music. His lyricism comes across as challenging and deeply autobiographical, equal parts "poetry leaning on true-to-life darkness" and "three chords and the truth." So, it is fitting that Callahan’s live set would command the same sense of friendliness-with-difficulty that the recorded songs do. With brief, candid, and charming interludes between older and newer material, an outsider can hear that this performance was obviously a full-bodied (and multi-era) engagement, no space left for distraction. The full album is an experience; make it one you look after.
