HELL FIRE - 'FREE AGAIN'

Details
Formed in recent years in San Francisco, though it may seem more likely that they hatched fresh out of a time travel portal from the mid-80s Bay Area thrash scene, Hell Fire have the classic look and sound of modern metal’s halcyon days. Hell Fire’s sonic assault warmly condenses elements of influences like Angel Witch, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Exodus, Metallica, Riot, Virtue and Diamond Head into 8 tracks of headbanging MUYA anthems. The free-wheelin’ creativity and infectious vitality of Bay Area thrash is a moment forever locked in time, but its spirit lives on in Hell Fire’s galloping guitar picks, soaring harmonies and blistering rhythms. The band’s perfect hybrid of NWOBHM theatrics and American thrash attitude delivers a rousing and genuine expansion on sounds long lost to pointless battles over who can be the most “extreme.” Hell Fire began when bass player Herman Bandala moved to San Francisco from Tijuana, Mexico with the hopes of forming a heavy metal band. Herman posted an ad to Craigslist which caught the attention of guitarist Tony Campos. They bonded over a mutual love of 80s thrash and NWOBHM, which was a hard thing to find in the Bay Area scene at the time. Just before Hell Fire entered the studio to record their debut album Metal Masses, Jake Nunn joined on vocals. The lineup continued to develop over time, finally solidifying with Nunn also taking up second guitar duties and drummer Mike Smith joining prior to recording Free Again. Hell Fire’s 2017 sophomore album, Free Again is being released for the first time on vinyl and remastered for CD and download in January 2019. it was recorded over 5 days in Grass Valley, California at engineer Tim Green’s Louder Studios (The Fucking Champs, Melvins.) Where Metal Masses showcased aesthetic nods to Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All album (as well as a cover photo brilliantly depicting a blurry hand speedily playing a Flying-V guitar), Free Again finds the band coming into their own with emphasis upon grooves, a beefier sound and tighter songs that expertly shift into new parts at the drop of a hat. Opener “Free Again” kicks things right off with a galloping riff forming out of a haze of feedback as the tape machine comes up to speed. The anthemic chorus showcases Nunn’s powerful voice as twin guitar harmonies lead into a thundering double-time coda reminiscent of Iron Maiden’s “Aces High.” Elsewhere, a marching snare drum beat and totemic blasts set up dueling guitar leads of “City Ablaze” while dizzying, chugging 16th-note guitars drive the blistering “Live Forever” into oblivion. “Wheels of Fate” and “The Dealer” echo the groove based tunes and harmonies of Rainbow and Gary Moore era Thin Lizzy. Album closer “End of Days” is a chorus effect drenched ballad that builds into a crushing lament over the constant beckoning of depression and the struggle for freedom and clarity. It’s a touching and powerful closing to an album that traverses many moods and packs in more great parts into a single song than most thrash bands do on an entire album.

Details
Imagine if Incesticide-era Nirvana were crossed with Static Age-era Misfits— sinister low budget horror-rock with a visceral, twisted weirdness and bludgeoning riffs. Some might call it nightmarish, we call it Warish . Warish is a very newly-minted SoCal trio formed in early 2018 that has wasted no time making its presence known. The band formed when guitarist / vocalist Riley Hawk and drummer Bruce McDonnell decided they wanted to try their hand at something more distinct than they’d done previously. “We wanted to do simpler riffs and a fun live show,” Riley ex-plains. “A little more punk, a little bit of grunge... a little evil-ish.”Their sound takes cues from a variety of cool underground sounds and twists it all into an energetic and exciting fist to the face of dark fury. Hawk’s effect-laden vocals hearken to early Butthole Surfers and David Yow’s tortured caterwaul in Scratch Acid. The guitars are heavy and powerful, though decidedly not straightforward cookie-cutter punk; more like Cobain’s and Buzz Osbourne’s wiry contortions. The rhythms bash and pummel right through it all with aggressive force ensuring that nothing gets overly complicated and the horrors keep coming throughout this five track, eleven minute debut.

Details
The one-man hurricane known as Bloodshot Bill started in his hometown of Montreal around 1998, with just a guitar and a stomp board. Since then, he’s had over 35 releases throughout Europe and North America. He keeps a jampacked calendar, juggling insane live shows all over the world with the requisite studio time, where the magic often happens with a star-studded stack of cohorts including The 5.6.7.8.’s, Jon Spencer, King Khan, Beat Poet Charles Plymell, Mark Sultan, Deke Dickerson and Shannon Shaw of Shannon & The Clams. Although this pistol plays well with others, there’s a reason he’s known as the greatest living one-man band. Artist Joe Coleman once called him “a cross between Jimmie Rodgers and Popeye,” and director John Waters says he’s “like Roy Orbison with a head wound.” There have been some movie roles (usually playing himself), and accolades, too—he has won FME’s Coup De Coeur, and has been a nominee three times for an Ameripolitan Music Award. Bloodshot Bill’s whacked-out take on rockabilly stroll and early R & B begins where Charlie Feathers’ cryptic mumble meets Bobby Lee Trammell’s uninhibited beat and then goes scampering down dark alleys beyond genres— plus, it’s catchy as hell! Come Get Your Love Right Now is his seventh album, and first for Goner, after several with the great purveyors of forgotten sounds, Norton Records. Dig the unhinged howl, that loose-stringed strum, his unique beat. Go bang your head on a bongo—come and get it!

**FMD WELCOME BURIED TREASURE FOR UK DISTRO** A brand new compilation of material by John Baker from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop! Baker ranks as one of the world’s most influential electronic musicians. His talent as a jazz pianist & ability to manipulate tiny fragments of tape into new sound is legendary. Whilst working on ‘The John Baker Tapes’ compilation for Trunk Records, producer Alan Gubby unearthed several reels of music & sound effects from the 1960’s BBC TV series ‘Vendetta’ - a mafia themed cop thriller starring Italian actor Stelio Candelli (Barbarella, Django, Planet Of The Vampires). Baker produced tense, rhythmic & unhinged James Bond style themes for the first series in 1966 with live drums, radiophonic beats, twanging bass lines & screaming jazz solos. The music is thrilling, sleazy, deranged & very hip. Highlights from the score are presented alongside other rare & unreleased Baker tracks, digitally remastered by Mark Ayres from the radiophonic archives. Plus sleeve notes from one of the show’s original creators, screenwriter Brian Degas (Barbarella, Colditz, Danger: Diabolik).

Building on their first two records and eschewing neither the humor nor the riffs that made the band a quick staple of the Scandinavian stoner rock scene, ...And Then Take You To A Place Where Jars Are Kept was first unleashed in 2003. Not only popular with the stoners, the record earned two Norwegian Grammy nominations and is widely recognized as one of the country’s great rock records. Bjarte Lund Rolland of Kvelertak says: “If the ‘Seats...’ album is Norway’s take on ‘Blues for the Red Sun’, then ‘...Jars’ is the equivalent to ‘Songs for the Deaf’: this masterpiece does the same job of lifting stoner rock out of the blues-doom-jam-hell the genre became at a certain point. Less stoner, more rock, less riff parodies and more SONGS, all made with finesse and a swagger that stands up to anything ever released in Norway. ‘...Jars’ is fully formed, all the songs are classics, the dynamics and variations makes this album one of very few in Norwegian rock that stands for a fabulous listen from start to finish. It’s my favorite album in the Thulsa-canon, the soundtrack to my early days, vorspiel-killer, tour-busblaster, and it has been the inspiration to start many a band, including Kvelertak”. Duplex Records has reissued ...And Then Take You To A Place Where Jars Are Kept and remastered it for this special occsaion. A-MOMS - 'STRAWBERRY CHEESE CAKE B/W MODERN NOISE'
Formats
TMR569 - 7"
Details
This is THE single. 1979. Detroit, Michigan. A-Moms, a.k.a. Algebra Mothers, were one of the Midwest's early cutting-edge new wave punk groups, who would go on to play shows with like-minded artists Pere Ubu and Destroy All Monsters. And this is their only release ever, that is, up until Third Man released a compilation of unreleased and live material last summer. Now you have the chance to own a reissue of the single that sparked it all. “Strawberry Cheesecake” is absolutely frantic and infinitely catchy, popping right off of the platter into your ears. Lightning bolt melodic synth punches, desperately human but then briefly robotic vocals and no shortage of freewheeling guitar solos make no secret why this track so beloved. On the flip side, “Modern Noise" is an alien punk keyboard-cram blaster with a decimating, canonical guitar freakout feedback ending that successfully melts minds.

THE DISTILLERS - 'MAN VS MAGNET B/W BLOOD IN GUTTERS'
Formats
TMR582 - 7"
Details
The Distillers are excited to announce that the physical version of their 2018 single "Man vs. Magnet" b/w "Blood In Gutters" will be released on February 14, 2019 via Third Man Records. This vinyl 7”, pressed at Third Man Pressing in Detroit, is the first chance to own new music from The Distillers in over 15 years. To call The Distillers simply a punk band doesn't do justice to either the band or the word "punk”. Guitarist, lyricist, and vocalist Brody Dalle, uses her medium as a platform for a higher plane of visceral lyricism and independence. Few modern day punk icons have not only embodied the genre so truthfully but also transformed the depth of what it can mean so thoroughly. Originally formed in 1998 in Los Angeles, the energetic band, with Dalle at the helm, released a string of damaged and powerful albums, EPs and singles with California punk labels Epitaph and Hellcat, then released their third masterpiece of an album, Coral Fang, on Sire before going on an untimely hiatus and ultimately splitting in 2006. After breaking a 12-year silence on social media late last year, these two new tracks from the group are a triumphant return for their rabid and devoted fanbase. “Man vs. Magnet” kicks off with crashing drums, thumping bass and melodious guitar, before transforming into a rough-and-ready punk anthem. The b-side “Blood in Gutters” is full of a wistful, wild energy from start to finish, with Dalle’s raw vocals gleaming as the chorus hits. Third Man is honored to be a part of The Distillers' continuing legacy by releasing the physical version of this single.

TENGGER - 'SEGYE'
Formats
CFUL126 - LP
Details
**SHIPS FOR 22ND FEB**There's a symmetry to be had here: duo’s name translates to “Skygod” and “heaven”, duo provides soundtrack for “aural hang-gliding”. What looks to be a simple equation becomes far more immersive and lush as you soar in and out of the grooves of “Segye”. Your guide this time out: Tengger. In ’05, itta (voice, Indian harmonium, toys) and Marqido (analogue synths) began a new, shifting musical life as 10 in Seoul, South Korea. To mark the massive March ’11 earthquake in Japan, 10 took a step in their evolution by becoming (((10))). The ground moved in a much different way when son RAAI arrived in ’12. Not missing a beat, or a good sign, (((10))) expanded to become Tengger. itta and Marqido, now with RAAI, incorporated all the adventures their self-described traveller family might have into their immediate lives and the sounds being being generated as Tengger. Touring the US, Asia and Europe, Tengger assimilate audience reaction and the myriad experiences of exploring and turn those elements into pillars of their sound, raw material for both foundation and take-off. It’s no surprise, and absolutely fitting, that ‘Segye’ (세계)–Korean for world–encompasses the mind, time and space. ‘Segye’ began taking shape in ’16 at Slow Slow Quick Quick (Seoul) during the demonstrations against President Geun-hye Park. Then, during the candle demonstration, artist Beck Jeajung made his voice heard and seen. Tengger, picking up on the synchronization, asked Jeajung to bring his art to the album taking shape. This environment, this bigger picture of family and community—this ‘Segye’—feeds the album as much as Tengger's own inner circle and outbound adventures. Their lush electro/drone psych may be the product of knobs, wires and electricity, but it's made from the experiences that only the real world can provide, both immediate and distant. These inner and outer dynamics, often at odds with each other, fuse to give the pulsing of ‘Segye’ a subtle luxuriance that celebrates the humanity inherent in their music. itta's voice melds and dances with the sonic patterns and processes, to continually layer, move and build on each other to not only lift the listener upwards, but to take them to places to take off again; destination to be determined.

**SHIPS FOR 22ND FEB - RED VINYL COPIES** The last we heard from Stephen Bailey was a year and a half ago, when he released his debut album Silo, a sprawling collection of warped psych-pop that zigzagged between classic 60's rock and eerie freak folk, and served as an impressive introduction into his expansive sound. It has been a little bit of a break, although he certainly hasn’t been resting on his laurels - Stephen also fronts Perth heavy-hitters Mt. Mountain, who just dropped their third album - but that makes it all the more exciting to reveal that his second Stephen Bailey album ‘9’ comes out on the 22nd Feburary. ’9’ picks up where Silo left off, creating a familiar sense of warmth and lushness - however, this time around things feel more considered, compared to the lo-fi bedroom psych pop nature of ‘Silo’. Led by woozy keys that constantly stab over a laid-back drum and bass grooves while grainy guitar chords chime in as instruments leave plenty of space for Stephen’s warbly voice to cut through, up close and delicate, as he weaves the track’s strongest hooks almost effortlessly. Expressions of indecisiveness towards love, misinterpretation and happiness in isolation litter the lyrics of ‘9’ creating a introspective mood that suck you further into the lush atmosphere of Stephens recordings. ‘9’ is presented in a 350gsm Card Sleeve with a double sided, full sized colour insert and download code.
