Just when we thought we knew what to expect from POW! they surprise us with a vigorous and rabid LPs worth of moody cybernetic punk that’s frankly their best yet. Their 4th is oil-dipped in a rainbowed slick of dread, yet the songs are buoyed by tight tunes that seem to have a lot of fun among the ruins of the future, dare I say with an eye to a less gloomy horizon? Melissa Blue’s sharp elbowed synths jostle with Byron Blum’s zap gun guitar in an ominous fog of oscillations, and yet somehow my toe is a-tapping. POW! got darker and more catchy at the same time, for which some credit is due to the excellent drumming of Cameron Allen and the fantastically future savvy production by Byron Blum & Tomas Dolas. Lots of sticky punk heart resin-layered in a futuristic-scanning bionic bop. For fans of Solid Space, Tubeway Army, The Units, The Screamers, and glittery black nail polish. It’s out on Castle Face May 10th

 (300) UK Colour exclusive: AMAZING new album from LA’s Zig Zags..honing their skills to create a fierce brew of US hardcore skate punk and UK Nwobhm ..like the first wve of US thrash from 83.. get on it!! “Everyone puts photos of Sid Vicious up on Instagram. The other night I watched ‘D.O.A’, the documentary about The Sex Pistols, first and only U.S. tour. In it - Sid's a mess, he and his annoying girlfriend. And they're the only ones who get interviewed! Maybe John Lydon and Steve Jones (not to mention the drummer) didn't want to participate. Maybe Nancy made Sid do it. But it whatever the case, I didn't wanna watch it. The rest of the band is crushing! They sound just like the record! As a musician in a touring band, I can't stand Sid Vicious. He’s cartoon character with a Swastika shirt, nodding off while everyone else loads the gear. I don't care if it's punk - you still gotta be able to play.” - J. Maheu, lead vocals and guitar for Zig Zags 8 years, 7 singles, 3 albums, 3 bass players, 2 drummers and God knows how many shows later - Zig Zags has continually evolved, mutated, transitioned and transformed, rising again and again, like a phoenix emerging from the flame. The addition of the newest member of our triumvirate - multi-instrumentalist, designated bassist (and longtime Zig Zags sound engineer) Sean Hoffman - recalls those golden moments past, when destiny stepped in...like when Neil Peart joined Rush or Bob Rock teamed up with Metallica. In short - the circle is now complete, the cornerstone has been set and the winged serpent rises - once again. Some say it’s luck, but really, it’s about patience. A band is like a relationship. You have to know when to push, and when to hold back. You gotta listen and you gotta learn. We look to the masters. Like Henry and Glenn, we’ve gone from drinking hooch to pumpin’ iron. We quit smoking. Two of us are married, for chrissakes! After 2017’s brutal European tour, which left us coughing blood and taking names, we sought out Lemmy’s Doctor (Feel Good), who diagnosed us with,”Rock’n’roll Pneumonia”. Like Lemmy, we were pushing too hard. And if you push too hard you’ll end up in an apartment above The Rainbow Room, playing video poker on Christmas Eve (which is also your birthday)...but that’s another story. The thing is - we ain’t dead yet. Every album we record, every song we write - has to be faster, harder and heavier - than the one before. And that’s why this new record is all about upping the ante and raises the stakes, and why it marks the dawn of a new day...and a new era. This album, our first with Riding Easy, was written over the last year. It’s reveals our longtime roots, our enduring love (all hail!) to the early punk of our hero(ines) Dead Moon and The Wipers (forever!) but friends, don’t be mislead...this is a METAL record - of the true blue, headbangin’, riff-ridin’, no-bullshit - kind. Listen here - it ain’t easy to play guitar and sing at the same time! But the more you focus, the more you get your head in the game, the more you push (yourselves and each other), the better it all gets. And the songs, they thank you for it. They get tougher, wilder and more raw, the more you strip them down. Wanna hear about the new shit? See below… Punk Fucking Metal- Our anthem tells the philosophy and origin story of the band (not in the real world, but in the metaphysical sense). Killer of Killers- This song explores our fascination with the post-apocalyptic landscape and the vehicles needed to survive a Mad Max film, not yet to be made. The Shout - A man is born with the power to kill with his scream those unfortunate enough to hear it. No Way Out - As children of the 80’s the “Satanic Panic” was a very real and dangerous tool used by the establishment. Just go ahead and Google “Judas Priest Dream Deceivers”... Why I Carry A Knife - A knife is a tool... like a hammer or a gun. God-Sized- There is a slow song on every album, a meditation in volume, a forest of sound to get lost in. Fallout - Whatever you believe in, the apocalypse is a real, whether we destroy ourselves or something else does it for us - we will not be here forever. But some of us hang on as long as we can…(that’s why I carry a knife). Ms .45 - A woman’s revenge. They’ll Never Take Us Alive - If I knew then, what I know now - none of those fuck teachers would have ever raised their voice at me.

*180 gr transparent vinyl* On their 6th LP, Papir blend the lush atmosphere perfected on their previous album ‘V’ with the guitar-driven sound of their early output. The result is a concise, yet compelling record of unique, blissful psychkrautrock.Papir, a trio from Copenhagen, might be the ultimate expression of the Danish creative soul: distinctively modern, deceptively minimalistic, and stylish yet understated. A band of virtuoso musicians who move between psychedelic rock, jazz and krautrock seamlessly with the ability to hypnotize audiences, Papir could easily be the showboats of the scene. However, since the appearance of their self-titled record in 2010, Papir have continued to follow their own road map, creating music with little interest in playing to the masses or catering to a specific genre. While the band’s output over the past ten years has varied from epic psychedelic guitar meltdowns à la Earthless to sweeping, reverb-drenched soundscapes, a core of dense rhythm and melody always holds it all together. On VI, Papir show a mastery of all their faces, combining the guitar heroics of their first few records with the more lush sound of last year’s V. In a mere 4 songs, Papir once again refresh tired ears with their unmistakable approach to rock music, leaving the listener blissed rather than bludgeoned. Available on 180gr. clear vinyl including download and on CD.

ELDER - 'SPIRES BURN / RELEASE'

Formats
  • PSYCHOBABBLE106 - 12" (COL)
    4046661608212
Details

*180 gr Purple vinyl* Bridging the gap between the band’s stoner-doom beginnings and their proggier leanings of recent years, this two-track EP finally gets its own dedicated European pressing via Stickman Records. When Elder’s second full-length record Dead Roots Stirring came out in 2011, it easily surpassed their debut and made waves in the stoner rock community. By the time their follow-up Lore was released four years later, the band startled listeners expecting another stoner epic: the band had incorporated elements of progressive, psychedelic, post- and psych-rock into their widening musical pallet. If it felt like a big step, that’s only because many had failed to notice the band’s transition showcased on the 2012 EP Spires Burn/Release - which has until now never seen release outside the US. Though only two songs long, as per usual Elder fill out the grooves with long-runners that travel a ways from their starting points. “Spires Burn”, the A-side, follows sludgy Maryland-doom style riffage into classic twin guitar interplay and psych-rock breakdowns. “Release” is the perfect counterpoint to the darker A-side, with uplifting, melodic leads and unexpected swerves. The first notions of a more progressive song structure and bolder songwriting shine through on both songs, which still remain heavy enough to appeal to fans of the band’s earlier work. Spires Burn/Release is not just a footnote but an excellent standalone record in the band’s trajectory. Available on 180 gram purple vinyl including download card.

MIKAL CRONIN - 'UNDERTOW / BREATHE'

Formats
  • FC052X - 7"
Details

"It’s easy to get caught up in an undertow, pulled down into the water, weightless and directionless. The current stirs and you lose your way. But eventually, if you’re lucky and patient, you can float back up to the surface and take a breath. This is my first new music in a while - my gulp of air. Many talented friends joined me, the basic tracks were recorded live together for the first time in my recording career. This felt good. Jason Quever recorded it in Los Angeles, December of 2018. Thanks for listening."

FISTULA - 'THE SHAPE OF DOOM TO CUMM)))'

Formats
  • TOTEM016LP - LP
    4046661624717
Details

Fistula was forged in 1998 by musical partners-in-crime Corey Bing and Bahb Branca. Over the course of their existence, the band has released a seemingly endless barrage of studio albums and split EPs through numerous lineup changes featuring the creative talents of bands such as –(16)-, Sloth, Hemdale, The Disease Concept, Accept Death, and so many others. Fistula is a band that is impossible to categorize, combining elements of remedial sludge, hardcore and a proverbial “bad case of the Mondays.” Nearing two decades of ear bleeding, Fistula remain the kings of doomed-out “miserycore.” The Shape Of Doom To Cumm))), their sixth full-length, alternates between blasts of misanthropic hardcore and Sabbath-tinged sludge. The fivepiece band has lost none of their fury and vitriol over the years, and The Shape... proves that Fistula haven’t let down the flag hoisted by Eyehategod and Iron Monkey decades ago. Available on clear red vinyl, limited to 300 copies.

Nearly two decades later, this slab of grimy sludge holds up with the best of the era, sitting nicely alongside Grief, Eyehategod, and Buzzov•en, yet with its own unique bile aftertaste.
