BIRTH - 'LIVE IN TUCSON'

Formats
  • CFUL130 - LP
Details

Cardinal Fuzz are proud to present to you Birth – Live In Tucson. Birth is the project of Grant Beyachau and Nik Rayne from The Myrrors who performed as Birth for this live improvisational performance in Tucson (USA). The performance was captured onto a handheld recorder (you can hear instrument leads buzz and cut out for a second here and there as things start up) as Birth, seated on the floor, journey towards a state of transcendence in front of a small but appreciative audience. Taking cues from Terry Riley, LaMonte Young as well as Spacemen 3 (Dreamweapon) – minimalist artists who offer no concessions to the listener except to surrender yourself to the drone. Grant creates swirling cyclic passages via analogue synthesizer and tape machine loops as Nik conjures subliminal notes via guitar and space echo. Over 25 minutes they create an experience of devotional music influenced by Middle Eastern and Sufism cultures – as notes bleed and swirl together in a lysergic haze. Its fluidity is its greatest strength as the piece offers no navigation points – all they ask is that through a mixture of drone, repetition and simple melodies that you surrender yourself to the trance-like and hallucinatory delirium created. It is captivating. Live in Tucson is a one off 300 pressing – all black vinyl. Housed in a 350gsm sleeve and given a private press like presentation via the sleeve and labels. Download Code Included.

THE MYRRORS - 'CURVED ENTRANCES'

Formats
  • CFUL131 - LP
Details

Cardinal Fuzz are proud to bring ‘Curved Entrances’, a dip into the archives with those shaman from Tucson, The Myrrors. Two tracks totalling over 30 minutes recorded back in the Winter months of 2014 at the first rehearsal with Guitar Wizard Conner Gallaher on board (joining Nik Rayne on 12 String and Grant Beyachau on Drums). Whatever spiritual incantations were placed before this rehearsal no-one can no longer remember but these two recordings stand as a testament that something very special was happening that night. This is psychedelia of the cosmic/koummune vibe as the trio strike up from an earthy hypnotic opening refrain until they hit a shamanistic ecstatic state that is both spellbinding and enrapturing. A band playing in their own space and caught under their own spell of improvisation that takes both band and the listener on a sonic nirvana as The Myrrors open your mind via the power of amplification and elevation. So please open up your mind and let everything come through – The Myrrors may just have found the key to the kingdom of heaven.

THE INTELLIGENCE - 'UN-PSYCHEDELIC IN PEAVEY CITY'

Formats
  • VMI01 - LP

Details

“Still panting from their installment in Castle Face’s Live In San Francisco series (where they ran a greatest hits clinic for basement sweat-rats) and from mega-mind Lars Finberg’s outside solo oddballer, Moonlight Over Bakersfield, The Intelligence return in Neu-veau mode with Un-Psychedelic In Peavey City, their tenth studio album-amalgam. Load up on electrolytes, all ye who enter here… “The customary tin / aluminum milestone won’t fit this true band of steel: the current Intelligence iteration is the most forceful and dynamic of any line-up in the project’s history. Although each performer has been smeared across myriad recordings and tours for years, the nowtime assemblage of Drew Church (bass), Dave Hernandez (guitar) and Kaanan Tupper (drums) currently positions The Intelligence as a world-class unit, with members playing in partnership with conductor Finberg rather than at his sometimes-service. Lars is giving the backrubs now, not getting ‘em—a delightful and cruel twist. “There’s no aspect of Un-Psychedelic In Peavey City that tilts toward phoned-in safe plays, no easy feat for a 10-albums-deep unit. For this collection, the band cast off the comforts of their traditional cosmopolitan haunts (Sacramento, Costa Mesa, etc.) in favor Grass Valley’s Louder Studios, a wilderness recording burg (OK OK, with a pool, yes) helmed by Tim Green, a twiddler maestro who has assisted Bikini Kill, Melvins, Comets On Fire, Wand and countless others in sterling fashion. The resultant recordings are the most expansive Intelligence material imaginable—perhaps Un-Psychedelic, but certainly free, playfully abstract and awesomely stretched out.” —Mitch Cardwell

THE REVENGE - 'FOUR SONG 12'

Details

If the original intent of punk rock was to reject the excesses of mainstream rock, strip things back to bare bones basics, jettison slickness and embrace a DIY ethic, then The Revenge were punk rock personified. Formed in 1977 in Cheshunt, London by Lol Hammond (vocals / guitar), Ian Strange (bass / vocals) and Dave Edgar (drums / vocals), these teenagers played most of London’s punk clubs, including the Roxy. The band selfreleased two singles in 1978 on their own Loony Records before disbanding in 1979. Both 7-inches were pressed in incredibly small amounts and now have legendary status amongst collectors going for ridiculous sums. According to Lol Hammond, “I was totally blown away to learn our second single was changing hands at £400 a pop! We probably recorded it for less!” The recordings are extremely raw, even by punk standards— particularly on the band’s first single, where the guitar sound is so tough and scuzzy it would not sound out of place on a volume of Back From The Grave. Needless to say, the singles received little press and vanished without a trace. Nowadays Lol Hammond is one of London’s well known DJs who has recorded as Drum Club and Girl Eats Boy, collaborated with Roger Eno, directed film scores and has remixed the likes of Jah Wobble, Killing Joke and The Fall, to name but three. In The Red is proud to issue the first legitimate (these singles have been bootlegged) reissue of The Revenge’s two singles. Sonically restored by William Hayter and masterfully mastered by Mikey Young, these tracks sound better and louder than ever before. “With no more than 200 / 250 copies pressed, the first Revenge single was greeted by mostly negative reviews. In retrospect, it’s songs epitomize the essence of three-chord Punk.” —Mario Panciera, author of 45 Revolutions (1976/1979)

“Thee Hounds of Foggy Notion / Live Performances Sans Stages And Whatnots With Thee Oh Sees (2008), is a film we made just over a decade ago, and this record is the soundtrack. I loved making it, and I love all that were involved. I’m honestly blissed-out proud to hear over the years that it somehow is loved by so many others, too. “I first met John Dwyer on Flag Day. I was blown away by a trio of roving Coachwhips guerrilla street shows that climaxed at the the scenic vista parking lot high above San Francisco atop Mt. Sutro. Amongst the gathered uninitiated hordes of souvenir sweatshirt selling families, and puzzled elderly global tourist translators, and a white weirdo tuxedo wedding party, was the sonic corruption of the Coachwhips...I’m certain that this exact event was the idea seed for Thee Hounds Of Foggy Notion, and that it saved my life a little bit. “When JPD asked me to consider making a video for Thee Oh Sees with the sole stipulation that he didn’t want to do anything fake-y to playback, my head started swimming. What we mutually agreed upon was to essentially reprise Flag Day, and film Thee Oh Sees performing live, but not on stages. “I rented a 15-passenger van, a generator, and the minimal cinematic equipment my trusted cinematographer friend James Wall deemed we needed. Everything sound wise was JPD territory and went through an ancient mixing board that Johnny had housed within a Samsonite suitcase. We ran all the plate mics from the drums, and the li’l pedestal mics from the amps through this old mixer, and we all believed that all would be well and swell.” —Brian Lee Hughes
