DUSTY MUSH - 'CHEAP ENTERTAINMENT'

Formats
  • SBR032 - LP
Details

In what the press are already calling ‘the last sincere example of cultural exchange before brexit hits full swing’ we have an exciting release indeed. Bristol based STOLEN BODY RECORDS have teamed up with the excellent, noisy and oh so parisian HOWLIN BANANA RECORDS to bring you the mighty debut LP from french fuzz saboteurs DUSTY MUSH. Dealing exclusively in crashes, bangs and wallops, the band have pushed the tape machines they used for a string of knockout (and sellout!) Records and tapes into submission once again and turned out a killer record from it. ‘Cheap Entertainment’ is an album saturated in early Ty Segall attitude, back when he was just another cheap brat turning out as many amazing punk 45s as possible, but we’re just ballparking them for you… A killer live band who recently toured the UK with a catalogue of blown out, fun and intelligently dumb punk records, Dusty Mush stand toe to toe with anything ‘cool’ from here. “C’est bon!” As they say, “well good” as we say...

PAUL JACOBS - 'PICTURES MOVIES & APARTMENTS'

Formats
  • SBR035 - LP
Details

Despite being fairly new to the Montreal scene, psychedelic/garage madman, Paul Jacobs. has been busy, putting out 5 full length albums and few and playing everything from big festivals such as M For Montreal to DIY venues. In doing so, he has shared the stage with bands including Pypy, The Demon’s Claws, The Gooch Palms, Les Marinellis and Guantanamo Baywatch to name a few. Though he has been setting stages on fire as a one-man army for as long as we can remember, he is now performing as a 4 piece which renders his catchy melodic garage even more incendiary His unique endeavour has caught the attention of Consequence Of Sound during Pop Montreal and other medias such as I Heart and Still In Rock are also paying close attention to his dealings. He’s getting regular radio plays and even held the top spot on Windsor’s CJAM, his hometown radio. “4/5 Star - Pictures, Movies and Apartments might be the best garage punk record of the year.” – The Guardian “One of the most visceral sounds in lo-fi garage rock”– Cult Montreal “Must-have: experimental, melodic, intense, and fun. 39TH AND NORTONS - 'THE DREAMERS'

Formats
  • SBR039 - LP
Details

Stolen Body Records is pleased to announce the long awaited 2nd album from the parisian angry byrds, 39th& The Nortons. The once bedroom solo project of the prolific Nick Wheeldon, leader of Os Noctàmbulos, returns with a now five piece psychedelic folk group accompanied by friends; Loik Maille of Jaromil Sabor on guitar, Fabien Gilles from Mille Colombes on drums and Martin Meilhan-Bordes & Sam Roux from the talented Bootchy Temple on bass and keys respectively. Carrying the songwriting torch of Gene Clark, the first album of the Byrds or Buffalo Springfield, The Dreamers is an album five years in the making, a case of third time lucky after the first two recording sessions were deemed not up to scratch. Much has changed since 2012's 'On Trial'. Gone is the mélange of The Seeds and Dylan's thin wild mercury sound, as well as the tales of loss and anger. For the most part this is an album of light and hope, whereas the premier album hinted at a more country influenced psychedelia The Dreamers is swimming in that Cosmic American Music of the late 1960's.

SUNFLOWERS - 'CASTLE SPELL'

Formats
  • SBR043 - LP
Details

Tongue twisting, teeth shattering, seizure inducing psych punk, noise pop stabs all the way from Europe’s California – Portugal. Since 2014, Sunflowers have been a heat wave in the cold, static times we live in. With the perfect amounts of confused riffs, slurred lines and feedback insanity, the Portuguese In 2017, they began their international career. They played in the Inner City Psych Fest in South Africa in April and in May they had their first taste of touring Europe, with 15 concerts over 3 weeks in Spain and France to promote their debut album The Intergalactic Guide To Find The Red Cowboy. In 2018, the band returns with CASTLE SPELL, their sophomore LP baring their characteristic meltdown of Larsen-effect-drenched riffs and acid bleached vocals into your stereo. One can say the band is young and restless, but they bring a well thought mutated slab of paranoia filled heavy shredders, while the hazed sunset fades away in the rearview mirror, darkening the desert and filling the air with some energized psych punk auras. “CASTLE SPELL” is a 10-story palace, each of them with its own atmosphere, its gloomy and murderous tenants, all narrated by Carol’s docile voice and Carlos’s intrusive howls. There’s more control and there’s more chaos, more insanity and mind-wandering trips, there’s more depth in its composition.

THE EVIL USSES - 'MUCK'

Formats
  • SBR046 - LP
Details

Following the release of their 2016 album, Amateur Pro Wrestling, The Evil Usses are set to release the 10” mini-album, Muck. Their eponymous debut saw them working with Jim Barr (Portishead/Get the Blessing) and Amateur Pro Wrestling was produced by Deerhoof guitarist John Dieterich. Both records have sold out on limited edition colour splatter vinyl. Muck is due for release on April 13th 2018 and sees the Usses stretching the envelope of their playfully warped vision of sonic reality. Having met as part of the final cohort to attend the legendary (and sadly now defunct) experimental Dartington College in rural Devon, Conrad, Dan, Leon and Lorenzo played together in various other styles and permutations before forming The Evil Usses. Having arrived at a sound described by some as somewhere between Beefheart's Magic Band, Tortoise and the Cardiacs, they now find themselves embedded within Bristol's boundlessly creative BLOOM collective. If you were to ask the band what the album sounds like you are not likely to receive a straight answer. Or even the same answer from any two members for that matter. One such member has been overheard to say (off the record of course), “When I think about Muck I think about the grouse. Mucky Grouse, inspector Mucky Grouse! There have been some dodgy goings on on the moorlands. Just what they are he doesn't know yet. He’s just got a real strong feeling that something bad is about to happen. Is he just being paranoid!? His red, rubbery eyelid is blinking and pulsing frantically yet his expression remains deadpan. All this thinking and distress is too much for his little brain to handle. He finds a comfortable bush and peacefully falls asleep. When he wakes up he'll know what this has been all about. It's muck. MUCK! That's what's about to happen, and there's no escape from it this time HA HA HA HA!” What that means exactly you’ll have to decide for yourself. "Grouse is this huge, and rather joyful instrumental jazz/synth banger, that manages to sit back and luxuriate in its own gravelly synth glory, before upping the tempo and bringing the psych funk into play."- Backseat Mafia "Seriously, this band can do no wrong. The cohesiveness of the ideas, the unstoppable nature of the band and that rare feeling you have when four clearly gifted but diverse musicians with different dynamics gather to unleash magic all go towards an enviable body of work."- Freq 7/10- Louder Than War Magazine "What a heavenly racket! This one is for the prog lovers who are pure of heart"- Soundblab Alternative Music

BOYTOY - 'NIGHT LEAF'

Formats
  • SBR047 - LP
Details

BOYTOY is a summer-time strut down a New York City sidewalk as the sun slips behind the horizon where cement meets the shore and waves crash on pavement. Their sound ebbs and flows between natural harmony and destruction—embodying the bright grooves of the 1960’s with heavy guitar riffs snatched from the Lower East Side of the 1970’s. Their forthcoming sophomore LP, Night Leaf, was born on a ranch in Topanga Canyon, California, surrounded by three dogs, two pigs, nostalgic tones of warm tube amps, analog tape machines and a slew of old trucks, RV’s, and surfboards. With a fresh collection of genuine tunes and contagious rhythms, founding members Saara Untracht-Oakner (vocals, guitar) and Glenn Michael Van Dyke (vocals, guitar), were joined by Chase Noelle (drums, ex-Thelma and The Sleaze) and Lena Simon (bass, La Luz), to record at producer Kyle Mullarky’s renowned Pump House Studio. Mullarky is well known for his work producing and recording California bands including The Growlers and Allah-Las. Since 2014, BOYTOY has released a self-titled EP, their debut full-length, Grackle, in 2015 (both on Papercup Music for vinyl + digital, Burger Records for cassette) and several 7” singles with various labels including Little Dickman, Bob Records and Swiss label Sacred Hood Records, garnering praise from outlets such as Rolling Stone, NYLON, Noisey, Stereogum and SPIN, to name just a few. They’ve spent the last three years touring extensively across the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, the UK and Europe, hitting SXSW, Growlers Six Festival, Northside Festival, while sharing the stage with Midnight Oil, Surfer Blood. “Night Leaf is an album which will fall under the radar of most popular culture commentators as it was made for love and for fun rather than for money and sales….. but, get these songs on the radio, TV and it would be the beginning of a new golden age for proper Pop music.” – Louderthanwar “BOYTOY may be relatively unknown up to this point in the UK, but the release of Night Leaf is certain to change that.” – Backseat Mafia “BOYTOY seem to exist in rock ‘n’ roll mythology, an effortlessly cool four-piece who make guitar music built for driving top-down across America’s West Coast.” – Clash Magazine

AGARIMO - 'IN SHELTER OF'

Formats
  • SBR048 - LP
Details

Agarimo is the current project of Bristol based Spanish born brothers Juan and Pablo Mestres, joined later by Marcus Jeffrey (uk) and Mon Valdés (Spain). Bringing forth forward pushing sonic weavings which are cerebral and yet retain primal groove based rhythms. Live they take vocal manipulation on to a new intricate level with clear mastery of their technology but do not forgo the spontaneous thrashing of guitars and drums like their very lives depend upon it. The Progression of their live show in their 12 short months of existence has been quite phenomenal and their recorded output with producer David Pye (Wild Beasts) and mastering by Bob Weston of Shellac leave in no doubt of their dedication on to a unique cause. Sounding quite unlike anything else Agarimo are set to make audiences both think and dance and prove that progression does not always come at the cost of aggression.

THE BRACKISH - 'FIRM BUT FAIR'

Formats
  • SBR049 - LP
Details

Psychedelic vanguards and misfit maestros of Bristol's BLOOM music collective, THE BRACKISH are an audacious all-star assembly of guitarists Luke Cawthra (Phantom Limb – The Naim Label) and Neil Smith (This Is The Kit – Rough Trade), drummer Matt Jones (Zun Zun Egui – Bella Union) and Port Erin bassist, Jacob Tyghe. Their debut album, 2014's Tough Guys (Lava Thief), righteously filled a kaleidoscopic void in instrumental music and along with 2016's follow up album, Liquid Of Choice (Bad Elephant Music), the band gained an infamous reputation for their awe-inspiring live shows across the European and UK art rock scene, including the La Ferme Électrique and ArcTanGent festivals. With their third album Firm But Fair, THE BRACKISH are storming the stage again with a new brew of gracefully strange arrangements and improvised auditory theatre. For their third album, The Brackish took off to a farmhouse in France with a mix of fully written tunes and ideas to jam and develop. The result is their most organic album yet, moving from the title track's dense rhythms to psych workouts Beermoth and Birdman, belligerent funk decaying into noise in Bango's Christmas and ending with the beatific By Monday. "Firm But Fair is the third album by Bristol four-piece The Brackish, but the first I’ve heard. My limited interactions with their other bands, all Avon-based and with origins going back a decade or more, didn’t prime me for liking this as much as I do." - The Quietus "The Brackish play progressive jazzy funky psychedelic playful lengthy heavy challenging yet accessible instrumental post-Zappa music."- Bristol 24/7

CAPTAIN SUNN - 'BEACH BURRITO'

Formats
  • SBR050 - LP
Details

Formed via the spirit of adolescent excitement in Bristol at the tail end of 2016, Captain Süün are a band well and truly beyond their tender years. Following a handful of gigs in 2017 - and a raucous set at Bristol Psych Fest’s opening event in July - they immediately caught the attention of revered Stolen Body Records, with a deal soon struck. The first fruit to bear from this relationship, the Beach Burrito EP, is a laser-targeted detonation of garage-psych, capable of putting most of their grizzled garage-psych elders to shame. Breezy jangle-pop gives way to ruthless fuzz breakdowns, and all of it rips hard enough to satisfy even the most discerning of the genre’s broad church. The quartet, whose expansive appreciation for psych far exceeds most, recognise the importance of songs above all else. Frontman Dan Dale - a songwriter first and foremost - is incredibly skilled at tapping the well of the Lizard King, as well as influences ranging from John Martyn to The Byrds. The menacing and spacious ‘Amber’ and the Segall-infused stomper ‘Skyline’ conclusively prove that the Bristolian upstarts aren’t at all concerned with having big shoes to fill.

THE PINHEADS - 'IS THIS REAL'

Formats
  • SBR052 - LP
Details

Born out of friendship, bowling, sci-fi movie marathons and literal brotherhood, The Pinheads formed out of what is now colloquially known as the Leisure Coast, spread out among the northern suburbs of the Illawarra and Wollongong region of Australia. They quickly established themselves as one of the area's must-see live bands; no mic stand was left unturned, no face left unmelted, no speaker stack was left unclimbed. Fans don’t leave Pinheads shows with fond memories – they leave with battle scars and folklore tales to last the ages. The Pinheads reside within a stylistic purgatory – too weird for punk shows, too free-form for garage rock, too genre-defiant for rock & roll, persevering on their own path, which may make pit-stops at any given corner of the musical spectrum should it suit their collective mood. The sound of The Pinheads is a mosaic of their collective tastes – built on the foundations of their heroes, a work of art in its own right. This might explain why there's no clear A-to-B for the band's studio releases thus far – their 2015 EP, I Wanna Be a Girl, is filled with high-octane twists and shouts; while their self-titled debut album from 2017 locks into a more consistent groove and reaches out to previously-untouched territory. That's not about to change anytime soon with the release of album number two, Is This Real. One may find themselves musing in the LP's opening minutes – it's The Pinheads, sure, but not as you know them. Is This Real marks a reunion of sorts for the band, after several members took a short sabbatical from The Pinheads, to go explore other musical projects – among them Tropical Strength, Luke Spook and Shining Bird. Reconvening in their home studio, known as The Shed, the septet set out to once again push out into previously-untouched Pinheads territory. The songs are longer, often slower and more methodically paced. The wildfire that sparked their initial run remains, albeit in a more contained manner. This is the sound of a band that has been re-calibrated, focused and with a reaffirmed sense of ambition. When The Pinheads started out, their modus operandi revolved around two straight, simple rules: Never play it safe; and always make it fun. This remains as true now of their recorded material and their live shows as it did when they began in 2015. The Pinheads may boast an art-school drop-out or two in their ranks, but they're by no means slackers. They're a band with vision – and they're excited about bringing it to fruition.

AL LOVER - 'EXISTENTIAL EVERYTHING'

Formats
  • SBR053 - LP
Details

Recorded sporadically between 2016 and 2018 while away from his typical studio set up, the latest from Al Lover, Existential Everything, continues a thread of colorful but meditative inner journeys -- what he playfully calls "music to be introspective in public to." What began with anxious spirals of dubbed-out psych atmospheres on past works like Zodiak Versions and Interference Patterns finds some resolution on Existential Everything, with a dynamic flow inflected as much by Al's kosmische influences as experimental trap and southern hip hop. While his past works tended to be relatively focused and tense, with moments of meandering exploration, Existential Everything is sprawling and relaxed offering a rich comedown after many dark but engrossing head-trips. Since 2013, Al Lover has been busy releasing a slew of projects on multiple labels (Stolen Body Records, The Reverberation Appreciation Society, Fuzz Club Records, Hoga Nord Rekords, PNKSLM Records and more), as well as collaborating with artists such as Goat, Anton Newcombe, White Fence and Cairo Liberation Front, all while touring extensively, producing the Elevated Transmissions Podcast and working with Levitation and Desert Daze festivals as their official DJ. Al currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

ELECTRIC RETRO SPECTRUM - 'SUB URBAN'

Formats
  • SBR054 - LP
Details

LOUD, DIY and FIERCE, like a mantra, three words that summarise Electric Retro Spectrum. Formed in Paris France, illustrated by the festival BarsEnTrans as “A sound between two giant fuzz pedals and a rain of reverb, invoking the great 70’s stoner in a dark black mass…” . "The trio manage to combine grunge, noise, heavy doom and psychedelia to create something refreshing and familiar." - God Is In The TV Zine. The band’s been playing live non-stop for 2 years, searching for a new sound, before recording their latest ep: SUB-URBAN (auto-recorded in 5 days in a kitchen in the Parisian suburbs by the drummer Pierre Dessauny, former sound engineer at la méchanique ondulatoire). Very hands-on, the band nearly makes everything themselves, from their screaming Cabs to their tortured guitars, even the merch (100% hand-drawn shirts). After touring in the US ( Echo fest in Detroit, Fort Wayne, Cake shop manhattan, Aviv Brooklyn ) and playing with some amazing bands ( wand, deap valley, the mirrors, the telescopes, kagoule, Pc Worship etc..) they developed their own trance on stage carried by a deep haunted voice. Often described as a mix of Pj Harvey, The Black Angels, and Sonic Youth. SUB-URBAN is an Auto-recorded EP, captured in the parisian suburbs in the hot summer of 2017. A mix of colors, the band experimented a lot with sounds on stage, bending edges and finding themselves on a dark croisade between a 90’s noise grunge and the depth of psychedelic music. The message came out as a strong revolutionary statement.

DR CHAN - 'SQUIER'

Formats
  • SBR056 - LP
Details

Throw out your VHS and your K7, forget your attitudes towards the idiots and their moustaches, stop pronouncing the word “cool” at the end of each sentence: the real deal of the year has just arrived! Dr. Chan is preparing to release their new album, Squier (via Stolen Body Records) on October 12th. This will be the best day for all the slackers on the planet since the release of The Big Lebowski. The fact is that too many garage groups feel obliged, after a first album punch, to deliver “the album of maturity” (First album Southside Suicide out on Stolen Body). These second albums are often boring and not very creative. They are there to be seen. Dr. Chan has decided to do the opposite. Not that their first album is particularly the sign of the strength of age, but one thing is certain, this second is even less so. If the energy is better managed, Dr Chan composed this album with a real will of “pop music”, and the pop is the adolescence. Oh, don’t think that Dr. Chan decided to disguise themselves. The group retains its characteristic nonchalance slacker style while also creating a much more engaging style of music that will even get sad girls who still have their braces on to dance…and to accompany them, some skaters came to piss off the world. Meanwhile, other groups are trying to give themselves a gender.

VINNUM SABBATHI / CEGVERA - 'THE GOOD EARTH IS DYING'

Formats
  • SBR060 - LP
Details

On June 2018 Cegvera visited Mexico for the first time and along with Vinnum Sabbathi embarked on a tour across the country which concluded with the recording of this split. “HEX VIII: The Malthusian Spectre” is the fourth entry on the HEX series of short releases from Mexican space doomsters Vinnum Sabbathi; this 13-minute madness was recorded in a single take, with only samples being added later. On this track, the band brings the concept of interplanetary exploration to the table, with the visit of man-made objects to the limits of the Solar System. A short intermission with samples taken from an article of Isaac Asimov serves as transition for both bands and gives the title of this split release: “The Good Earth is Dying”. “The good earth is dying; so, in the name of humanity let us move. Let us make our hard but necessary decisions. Let us do it quickly … let us do it now.” Gerardo moves from drums for Vinnum Sabbathi to guitar for Cegvera for the second half of the split. Assuming that another astronomical object known to harbour life is inhabited by humans, if resource depletion prevails then this astronomical object would face the same consequences as the ones that Earth is facing today because of us. Narrating from the colonization (Arrival/Colonia), then the wasting of resources and overpopulation (Depletion/Overshoot), and finally the consequences that this would create (Collapse/Aftermath ). This release marks a significative change in the sound of Cegvera, as this is the last record where Aaron Scrupps performs on bass, triggering the evolution of the project into a two-piece doom/post-metal band.

DUBI DOLCZEK - 'DUBI IN SPACE PT 2'

Formats
  • SBR061 - LP
Details

Dubi Dolczek returns with Part 2 of his space exploration… For a laidback, surreal take on '50's doowop, exotica, 'absurd calyso' and various Earthling musics in between, the Dubi Dolczek band, led by the vocal stylings of Dubi himself, are a unique prospect. Apply some Stasis-Gel and hop aboard for a treat. Their new album 'Dubi In Space Pt2' continues the adventures of these roguish mavericks as they make their way to the Cat's Paw Nebula. Dubi In Space: Part 1 The Emerald Gauntlet opened the doors to the weird and wonderful world of Dubi. With Part 2 we are walked further into the void to forget where you think you are as your mind begins to depressurise and you take your first sip of a Vrendakian Spritzer… We asked Dubi to explain the first single Plasma Cloud to us… “Caught in a power-play between the Galactic Federation and the Uncle-hating Romagonian Emperor, and with a fleet of Deathbot fanatics in the mix, Dubi needs answers. And relatively fast. Can he find a benevolent entity to rival the starsnuffing powers of Tecron...? Far beyond the Outer Rim of the galaxy, in the unfathomable depths of The Great Drift dwells the Master Of The Nebulous Palm. With mighty licks of its tongue it births our stars and holds us steady with a gentle paw. For everything is helix, and spirals into filaments at the Master's will. In this video we see Windel the cat attempt to commune with this great being through a plasma ball, and to seek an audience on Dubi's behalf. Dubi must learn to communicate using only a series of slow blinks...."

IVAN THE TOLERABLE & HIS ELASTIC BAND - 'RATIONS'

Formats
  • SBR063 - 2xLPs
Details

‘Rations’ is Oli Heffernan's twentieth album in 7 years as Ivan The Tolerable, now the main vehicle for his hallucinatory basement outpourings since the dissolution of the beloved Year Of Birds. After a constant flow of releases on labels like Third Uncle, Art Is Hard, Endless, Forward Fast, Ack! Ack! Ack! and more, he finally found his way to Stolen Body Records. Here he eschews his old group's acerbic brevity for a sprawling double slab of time-dilating chug and wail. Joined by Tom Carter (Charalambides) on cosmic lead, Kevin Nickles (Ecstatic Vision/Writhing Squares) on flute and saxophone and members of King Champion Sounds (with whom Heffernan plays bass and organ), the band ride the taut, rattling grooves out past Pluto every time. ‘Rations’ was recorded on three different planets during 2018. -Thomas House (Sweet Williams/Sloath/Haress) March 2019
