**REPRESS - TRANSPARENT RED VINYL VERSION TO CELEBRATE 2019 AUS/WORLD TOUR**"After a cancelled flight I found myself stranded at the Tokyo airport overnight. Between my interrupted bench naps the surroundings found their way into my dreams, particularly the big banners in the departure hall stating: 2020. Not aware that they were announcing upcoming Olympic games, my imagination wandered. 2020, a leap year. The year of the rat, the election. Perfect vision. The year of hindsight. The repetition, the ritual of the superstitious. A spell cast on the approaching future; not yet there, but close enough to be seen with full clarity. The year itself seems to draw a circle around its followers, as to protect anyone who dares enter. And it all begins on a late-Capitalist night…" Twenty-Twenty is Molly Nilsson’s 8th album; the latest opus of an artist in a constant state of development and strength. Twenty-Twenty is about emerging from the husk of your old self, about binning the chrysalis and daring to stand up both to power, and also to your own limits. In 2018, we see the climate changing, democracy crumbling, inequality and injustice erupting. 2020 examines the near future, seeking out clarity, reflection, renewal and opportunity. It contains anthems so tall as to induce vertigo, leaving the taste of Euro Dance in your mouth, albeit without a four on the floor beat. Here, the pop auteur is haunted by the late Prince, channelling Courtney Love and Lou Reed, anger and love. Recorded as ever in her own Lighthouse Studios and co-released with her imprint Dark Skies Association, the record is consistent in strategy and approach to past releases, yet on 2020 Nilsson pushes the limits of what can be said in the scope of a pop song even further. Despite working with used keyboard sounds that evoke memories of a distorted past, the sound is distinctly contemporary. The record drifts between playful punk methods and hi-fi ideas, strikingly clear through the fuzz of a surrounding world painted with reverb. Rather than gracefully dissecting, 2020 rips apart personal neuroses and insecurities, looking for the roots of issues and the equation that, when solved, will produce the future. “I don’t care if the world is through, every night is new,” 2020 erupts with fist-in-the-air empowerment, a realization that if we’re all alone down here, we can still make it. Every Night Is New is a personal and societal manifesto, a slogan comprising the different layers that make this record Molly Nilsson’s most personal, evocative and emotionally packed in years. First single Serious Flowers is a naked confessional trance hit stripped of its beat. Centred around broken trust and friendship, Nilsson sings over suspenseful synth strings with a vocal delivery so inexact and honest, its vulnerability seems almost unaware of itself. Although very much in the vein of Nilsson’s production style on her recent albums, Days of Dust, accomplishes escape and breaks free from the past. There’s a carpe diem immediacy to this fast-paced Rock Song that belies Nilsson’s near-iconic self-contained delivery: “Like I had just been saved from a burning building of desire, I got back up and I ran right into the fire.” It’s so immediate, and speaks so perfectly about the nature of desire, that you wonder how you’d never thought about it like that before. The themes on the album are submerged in the inner life, lucidly dreaming with one eye open, fixated on the external world and its growing pains. Nilsson turns inward and seeks answers to questions imposed by physical existence, examining one's own responsibility in the face of climate change (A Slice of Lemon), the political depression of society (Gun Control), and the struggles with drinking, between euphoria and despair (Blinded by the Night). The serious topics aren't met with hopelessness; the tone suggests defenceless optimism and a tight grip on desire. This time around, we’re not examining the past with Molly Nilsson, we’re becoming who we want to be. We’re exploring the future, accepting who we are, clear eyed and with perfect vision, near and far sighted alike

*UK EXCLUSIVE AVOCADO GREEN COLORED VINYL* The forthcoming ninth edition of the popular compilation series featuring long-lost vintage 60s-70s proto-metal and stoner rock singles, Brown Acid: The Ninth Trip is set for release on Halloween 2019. The first track from the latest installment, the heavy psych groove "Pain" by Fiberglass Vegetables is available to hear and share via YouTube HERE and Bandcamp HERE.About the Brown Acid series: Some of the best thrills of the Internet music revolution is the ability to find extremely rare music with great ease. But even with such vast archives to draw from, quite a lot of great songs have gone undiscovered for nearly half a century -- particularly in genres that lacked hifalutin arty pretense. Previously, only the most extremely dedicated and passionate record collectors had the stamina and prowess to hunt down long forgotten wonders in dusty record bins -- often hoarding them in private collections, or selling at ridiculous collector's prices. Legendary compilations like Nuggets, Pebbles, ad nauseum, have exhausted the mines of early garage rock and proto-punk, keeping alive a large cross-section of underground ephemera. However, few have delved into and expertly archived the wealth of proto-metal, pre-stoner rock tracks collected on Brown Acid. Lance Barresi, co-owner of L.A./Chicago retailer Permanent Records has shown incredible persistence in tracking down a stellar collection of rare singles from the 60s and 70s for the growing compilation series. Partnered with Daniel Hall of RidingEasy Records, the two have assembled a selection of songs that's hard to believe have remained unheard for so long. "I essentially go through hell and high water just to find these records," Barresi says. "Once I find a record worthy of tracking, I begin the (sometimes) extremely arduous process of contacting the band members and encouraging them to take part. Daniel and I agree that licensing all the tracks we're using for Brown Acid is best for everyone involved," rather than simply bootlegging the tracks. When all of the bands and labels haven't existed for 30-40 years or more, tracking down the creators gives all of these tunes a real second chance at success. "There's a long list of songs that we'd love to include," Barresi says. "But we just can't track the bands down. I like the idea that Brown Acid is getting so much attention, so people might reach out to us."

KUUNATIC - 'KUURANDIA'

Formats
  • EN005 - 12"
Details

KUUNATIC was formed in Tokyo in 2016 by three female multi-instrumentalists. Their first EP, Kuurandia, integrates traditional Japanese music, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, dub and B-movie horror soundtracks. They combine primitive drumming, heavy bass lines and atmospheric keyboard sounds with traditional Japanese instruments and three-way vocals. The band released their first single, Roho Ulio Toweka, as a split 7” with Taiwanese fuzz psych band Crocodelia in August 2018 and had a successful Taiwanese tour in January 2019. More recently, they toured in the UK for the third time in May / June and expanded the tour to Sweden, Norway, Belgium and San Marino. Their Stockholm live show was reviewed in one of the biggest Swedish daily newspapers, Dagens Nyheter, while the early digital release of Kuurandia has attracted positive reviews from contemporary psych music publications such as Echoes and Dust and Dayz of Purple and Orange. More tours, recordings and releases await. Seoul-based label Extra Noir is proud to add Kuunatic to their lineup of primarily Asian artists, representing the hidden corners of the urban underground.

RICH RUTH - 'CALMING SIGNALS'

Formats
  • CGR002 - LP
Details

Michael Rich Ruth has composed ambient music for a long time. After a break from years touring with different bands, he spent his free time in a small home studio in North Nashville. The blueprints for ‘Calming Signals’ began to emerge through a more dedicated focus on the diverse traditions of ambient, new age, and minimalist music. The ideas became realized pieces when Ruth started to collaborate with friends. These players transformed the material into something much more lush and unpredictable; pairing repetitive, droning synthesizer movements with organic improvisation. Calming signals is a term that refers to the way dogs communicate stress and use certain mechanisms to calm themselves or reset. Ruth relied on the creation of this music to find peace and balance amidst trauma. One summer morning while he was recording the album, Ruth was held up at gunpoint and carjacked by two people outside of his home. The following weeks were spent working on ‘Calming Signals’ with a new layer of angst and emotion. These compositions became a means for him to work through this personal struggle and organize his anxiety into something constructive.

ABRONIA - 'THE WHOLE OF EACH EYE'

Formats
  • CFUL144 - LP
Details

Cardinal Fuzz and Feeding Tube Records are proud to bring to you the latest long player from 'Abronia' (Portland USA) The follow up to their debut, The Whole of Each Eye sees Abronia cementing its very singular place in the canon of the broader psych rock universe. A six piece consisting of two guitars, electric bass, tenor saxophone, pedal steel, and one 32” inch bass drum (no drum set here), Abronia pulls from kraut rock, spaghetti Western soundtracks, doom, 60’s UK folk, spiritual jazz, ritualistic drone, and infuse it all with the arid haze of deserts near and far. Recorded, as the first album was, at Type Foundry in Portland, but mixed this time by Billy Anderson (known for his work with Sleep, OM, Neurosis, and many other heavy legends), the band builds off of the solid foundation of the first album. There are still hooks and visceral, crushingly satisfying payoffs, but there’s a deeper complexity to these arrangements that rewards careful listeners and searchers. And while almost half of the last album was entirely instrumental, you’ll find no purely instrumental tracks on this one. This time Keelin’s voice has come to the forefront–a deep and deadly force that brings to mind Nico, Grace Slick, Jarboe, Malaria’s Bettina Köster, and White Magic’s Mira Billotte. Note the dynamics–from the subdued falsetto on the first half of “Cauldron’s Gold” to the murderous scream at the end of “Half Hail.” Another obvious change if you read the liner notes–three of the six members have switched out since the last album, which would seem like a big deal if it hadn’t happened in such a staggered and organic way. Rick Pedrosa is deeply part of the crew by this point–he joined the band on pedal steel a month after the first album was recorded (September 2016)–replacing the lap steel player–Andrew Endres, Paul Michael Schaefer replaced Benjamin Blake on guitar just after the album release show (July 2017). Shaun Lyvers is the newest member–replacing the continent roaming Amir Amadi on bass in spring of 2018. Abronia is very much a band. Songs are written together at practice with everybody contributing.

F/i - 'WHY NOW NOW?...ALAN!'

Details

After many delays, Sorcerer is please as punch to finally reissue the debut LP from 1987 by Milwaukee space-rock gods, F/i: Why Not Now?… Alan! Available for the first time on the format since its initial release, it remains a Holy Grail item for lovers of cosmic rock & roll sounds from Underground Amerika in the 1980s. F/i had been churning out tape upon tape of experimental electronics since the early ‘80s. Influenced by Krautrock (particularly Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel) and the harsh noise of Industrialists Throbbing Gristle and early SPK, by the mid ‘80s they morphed into a fully-fledged “rock” band, albeit one incorporating all of the above. This LP is the perfect synthesis of these sounds: grimy, lo-fi ‘rock’ with elements of industrial clang and extended, Hawkwind-ish space-rock jams; from the two-step cosmic churn of “Electric Waltz” to the ‘Neubauten-style bang & bash of “Zombie Theme”. Remastered by Mikey Young, the sleeve perfectly replicating the original, our edition is a limited edition of 500 copies.

GROTTO - 'LANTERN OF GIUS'

Grotto’s third LP and Stickman debut is a summation of the band’s achievements in their brief but prolific history - a two-track odyssey across spaced- and stoned-out heavy rock landscapes. Within Europe, the Belgian heavy rock scene is sometimes unfairly overshadowed by its larger neighbors. However, at the latest with the founding of Desertfest Belgium in Antwerp, the heart of the European Union is rising as a focal point in the scene. Enter Grotto - a unique voice hailing from Flanders who met at the festival’s first edition in 2014. Beginning with a series of heavily improvised late-night jam sessions, they stumbled upon a sound that forged the heavier elements of rock with dreamy and melodic trips. Releasing two LPs in quick succession in 2016 and 2017, Grotto made strides to defining their own voice, incorporating elements of post rock, psychedelic rock and atmospheric soundscapes into a progressive song structure. Lantern of Gius is Grotto’s third LP and debut for Stickman Records. Comprised solely of two epic songs - one per side - it is a musical journey few other bands could recount solely in instrumental fashion. Guitarist Marvin Dinneweth’s iconic guitar work uses spacious, open guitar chords as opposed to chunky stoner riffs for the foundation of the music, allowing bassist Jeroen Moerman and drummer Arno Cottyn to carry the undercurrent of the musical stream. Moving between passages of introspective post rock and full-on distorted riffing, Lantern of Gius is the band’s most varied and mature effort yet that will resonate with listeners from all across the spectrum of rock music and beyond. Lantern of Gius is available on colored 180gr vinyl including download and on CD beginning October 18th, 2019 - just in time for the band’s own appearance at Desertfest Belgium on the same weekend!
