*BACK ON VINYL* San Francisco psych wunderkind Ty Segall continues a tireless musical assault on ears and minds with his third album, Melted. Segall says it sounds like "cherry cola, Sno-Cones and taffy." Indeed! Over the past two years he's released records more often than most people do laundry, but somehow there is still a heap of anticipation for this new album on Goner packed full of truly psychedelic pop songs with great vocals and exciting arrangements. On the heels of two critically acclaimed solo albums, Segall holed up in a basement studio with Mike Donovan of the Sic Alps in late 2009 and early 2010 to come up with Melted. It's a carefree yet precise balance of acoustic and electric elements. Distorted echo and thunder mix together with enough clean guitar lines and addictive choruses to deliver an album that recalls the '60s without sounding like anything created during that decade. Time melts away, vision melts away, minds melt away. Get Melted! "Ty Segall's short, sharp songs peal out of the garage without raising the doors, sending 1960s rock riffs crashing through splintered, smart-ass lo-fi buzz." -Pitchfork "His second album, Lemons, solidifies his standing as one to watch.... There are few moments when Ty Segall isn't irresistibly catchy." -Nylon "Warped sonics do nothing to diminish the impact of his vigorously nostalgic riff and stomp. Segall thunders along with the timeless, impudently rowdy energy of a cement basement dance-off." -SPIN, ? Third solo album from San Francisco garage psych wunderkind ? Touchpoints: Safe as Milk / Clear Spot-era Beefheart, T. Rex, blurry sweet junk-food highs.

*LTD COPIES COLORED VINYL COPIES INSTOCK NOW* Despite her last name, Anna St. Louis was born and raised in Kansas City. She grew up a painter and singing in punk bands, eventually leaving her hometown to attend art school in Philadelphia. After graduating she made the move to Los Angeles where she began teaching herself guitar, writing songs and recording them on her own in her bedroom. First Songs is the sound of someone discovering their talent in real time—a peak into the collage of a wonderful mind that is absorbing their new surroundings and using new tools to put them into the room. Listening to this collection you can feel the sun coming in through the window—St. Louis on the foot of the bed with a guitar on her knee, finding her voice. She wears her influences well—think Patsy Cline singing over John Fahey—but has a style all her own. And while one can take the artist out of the midwest, one can’t take the midwest out of the artist—so let this be known: this is Midwestern music ran through a California filter. Anna St. Louis will have many more releases in her lifetime, but let it all begin here—First Songs. “a low dangling cigarette of psychedelic folk.” —NPR Music “...gorgeous and smoldering” —Pitchfork

ANUNNAKI - 'IMMANENTIZE THE ESCHATON'

Formats
  • CFUL145 - LP (COLOURED)
Details

**TRANSPARENT GOLD COLORED VINYL**Occult Psychedelia For The Initiated. Doom For The New Age. Hailing from Nanaimo, British Columbia, on the west coast of Canada, Dave Read (Moths & Locusts) on bass/guitar/synth/effects and Arlen Thompson (Wolf Parade) on drums/modular synth have for the last several years teamed up as ANUNNAKI, and over the course of several sold out EPs and one previous full length album (2017’s “Two Treatise On Gnostic Thought”) they have harnessed a maelstrom of hurricane force tones into their unique sound. The new album “Immanentize The Eschaton” (ie, to bring forth the Apocalypse) reflects all the chaos and turbulence going on in the world today, be it politically, environmentally, or socially, as well as reminding us of the beauty, love and compassion that so often appears fleeting in these modern times. Imagine a cross between Motorhead’s Lemmy & Philthy Animal and Kraftwerk’s Ralf & Florian, together channeling the kozmik vision of Alice Coltrane through Sunn O)))’s amplifiers, and with influences varying from Klaus Schulze to Acid Mothers Temple, from New Age to Black Metal, Madame Blavatsky to Thich Nhat Hanh, and you’ll start to get the idea of what Anunnaki is all about. To put it mildly Anunnaki creates a massive sound for only 2 musicians. Live, the band has shared the stage with artists including Merzbow, Peter Brotzmann, Plastic Crimewave Syndicate, Darsombra, The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol, Comet Control , and Finland’s Siinai, among others. The album itself comprises just 3 epic tracks, ranging in length from 7:01 (album opener ‘Rise Of The Millenarian’), to 21:25 (‘The Demiurge Begins Anew’, which comprises all of Side B). In what is becoming true Anunnaki fashion, all tracks were recorded live off the floor, with no overdubs and minimal edits. The striking cover art is a black & white photographic portrait of the band with bass/guitar doubleneck and modular synth at the ready, beautifully shot in Nanaimo’s iconic White Room venue by local photographer Jason Felker. Produced by the band, and assisted by Andrew Halliwell, with mastering once again handled by Dietrich Schoenemann.

Headland is a collective of Australian musicians that compose, record and perform soundtrack music for surf films in various forms. The group leader is Murray Paterson, an old surfer himself, who in between wrangling two red-headed boys, finds time here and there to record bits and pieces of guitarbased music. Mostly he heads to Nashuaville where his longtime colleague from a previous life in arts education, Les Dorahy, has set up a small recording studio in the old Booyong General Store, situated in the Byron Bay Hinterland. Whenever friends visit their part of the world, they drop past and join in. Most of the music remains instrumental but this new album is a collection of songs. One of Murray’s comrades from his days with Tex Perkins and The Dark Horses is Joel Silbersher. Joel has been a longtime Headland collaborator–playing bass and guitar–but while recording material for the new album, vocal melodies kept finding their way into Murray’s instrumentals. Soon there seemed enough of a coherent lyrical theme to build an album around. There’s a song about installing a dishwasher. There’s one about a soccer ball filled with blood, and one from the point of view of a lizard. The topic of love among the elderly gets a look in, and there’s a drone called Face in the Sky, which is about a face in the sky. There is some nice instrumentation touches here too with cello (Tahiti Jones), pedal steel (Danny Widdicombe), double bass (Melissa ‘Curly’ Hunt), violin/melotron (Amanda Brown – GO BETWEENS), percussion (Luke Peacock) and organ (Whitey White) fleshing out the core band of Paterson, Silbersher, accordionist Les Dorahy and drummer Brock Fitzgerald. During the recordings, a good friend of the band, Australian rock legend Spencer P. Jones sadly departed. One of his melodies and lyric was dovetailed to a Paterson instrumental and Ode to Death Trip became an emotional tribute to mark his passing. A couple of other covers appear on the album. There is a surprising, acoustic rendition of Motörhead’s Deaf Forever and a version of John Sebastian’s Darlin’ Be Home Soon. This last is a relic from 2007 when following a hard-drive meltdown at Nashuaville, the only remaining recording of a late night jam was an unedited headphone mix. It seems though, it was impossible to exclude this from the collection. There’s still enough of the spacious Australian land- and seascapes to satisfy fans of the previous Headland albums (sound/track 2013, Cosy 2015, True Flowers from this Painted World 2017), journeys through a sonic architecture centred around the motion of the ocean and it’s meeting with the coastline. But a narrative of loss and longing sits on the surface here: Silbersher’s voicing is an emotive thread that breaches at all the right times. There are references to the likes of Alex Chilton, Nick Drake and Daniel Lanois but Christian Pyle (Prawn & Spanner Studio) brings a sensitivity to the mix so that any references float rather than reveal themselves in bold relief. What Rough Beast marks the development of an ensemble and documents a sense of meaning embedded with the tone of place. File under Salty.

THE GONKS - 'FIVE THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE GONKS'

Formats
  • RIYH003 - LP

Details

The lyrics to The Gonks instrumental track “I’m Dead” say it all. In the tradition of the Tronics, the Subsonics, the Gories and going back to the Dixie Cups, The Gonks arrive with a seventeen minute record of ten songs hacked down to the bare minimum, led by teenager singers Ave Lynch on drums and Sami Perez on bass, who tell the tale of lonely trams, lone wolfs, midnight loners, very alone types, loners, double loners and lonesome alone folk. If Leonard Cohen wrote songs about getting hit by a car for bubble gum bands, or Jonathan Richman wrote heartfelt songs about his mom for The Shaggs, one would have The Gonks. Produced at Studio Bonk by Sonny Smith of Sonny & The Sunsets for his new label Rocks In Your Head Records, this band eschews the glossy over-shiny pop that pervades the rock ’n’ roll world these days and reject all the crooningover-quasi-prog-rock of late and go minimal. “Am I just a sewage pipe, living in the dirt? Sometimes I feel like I might burst, but I’ll just leak a little first....” from the titular single “I’m A Leaker” explains where these damaged loners are coming from.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD - 'BEYOND'

Formats
  • BFTRS018 - LP
Details

Since their formation in 2009, There Will Be Blood have released 3 albums and 2 EPs of western-tinged boogie, building on a heritage of American blues and rock n’ roll. Their new album Beyond is out October 18th, 2019 on Blues For The Red Sun Records. Beyond is the fourth studio album by the Italian “raw blues” rock band There Will Be Blood. Their own self-invented genre is an electric mix of Hill Country Blues, rock n’ roll and funk which is brought to life with storytelling of a cinematic scope. On their previous records, the band wove a story of a nameless traveler on a road studded with monsters, miracles and catastrophes. Their new record breaks with the past and tells a new supernatural tale of a boy grieving for his mother and overcoming mortal existence: the “beyond”. Beyond is There Will Be Blood’s first record recorded with their new five-piece lineup, an expansion which has notably contributed to the record’s broader reach of styles and dynamics. The album’s eleven tracks move from wild boogie rock and electric blues to dancable funk and soulful gospel carried by the hypnotic percussion of African litanies. Beyond is a rock n’ roll soundtrack to a film set in the dusty wild west, with the film solely showing on the back of your eyelids. For those wanting a more literary experience, an included poster tells the story with which the listener can follow along. Available on white vinyl.

Hollow Hearts, the hardworking Americana/folk band from northern Norway, finishes their story of romance between Annabelle and Peter with their third album. Hollow Hearts hail from Tromsø, a city sitting well within the Arctic Circle in the far north of Norway. Their music takes elements of folk, Americana and roots - genres traditionally associated with the American heartland - and channels them through their own unique Nordic voices. The result is a singular blend of pop music that feels as at home bathing in the Nordic Lights as it would in Nashville. Peter is the third and final chapter in the band’s story about the lifelong relationship between two lovers and just how complicated that love can be. At times melancholy, at times uplifting, Hollow Hearts’ music is always emotional, beautifully conveyed and impressively performed. Using both acoustic instruments and reverb-drenched electric guitars, the band tastefully utilizes traditional elements of pop and folk in a modern context, sometimes even hitting upon traces of Wilco, Fleetwood Mac and Amason. Peter is available on LP and CD from Westergaard Records.

THE VICTIMS - 'S/T'

“Punk music, at its most effective, its most important, exists at a nexus of a few simple but important ideas. Punk needs to be youthful, it needs to be reactionary, it needs to be short-lived and it needs to be controversial. So for a group of twenty-something Australians, excitable as the frontline first wave of kids responding to both the Ramones and the Sex Pistols (yet still influenced by the New York Dolls and Stooges and Flamin’ Groovies), who existed for but barely for a year from 1977-1978 and wrote songs about serial killers, high school girls and hating disco…well, I’d argue they are the most perfect punk band ever. “The band was Dave Flick (aka Dave Faulkner later of the Hoodoo Gurus) on guitar and vocals, Rudolph V (Dave Cardwell) on bass and James Baker on drums. Best known for their classic ‘Television Addict’, that song is but the tip of the iceberg of the band’s powers. Having self-released two godhead 7-inches during their brief existence, the seven songs on those singles are absolute cannon at this point. Quintessential, pure, unfuckwithable. And all that is just side one of the LP. “Side two contains a bounty of unreleased-for-decades demos of nine otherwise undocumented Victims originals. Demos in name alone, these properly recorded songs brim with all the identifying marks of the known Victims classics…irreverence, taking the piss, murderers and an invigorating youthful attitude. “The last thing to remember about punk as a theory, an aesthetic, is that its ‘ideas’ are all bullshit anyway. That’s easily proved by the 7-inch EP released alongside this release of new recordings of ‘Charlie’, ‘Horror Smash’, ‘I Wanna Be With You’ and ‘Everynite’ which proves that the Victims now (featuring Ray Ahn from the Hard-Ons on bass), some 40 years after their heyday, could still easily take on any au courant band half their age.” – Ben Blackwell

ZACHARY HAY - 'S/T'

Formats
  • SCTR045 - LP
    0719104892632
Details

More or less known for his projects Bronze Horse and The Dove Azima, which cloaked his name on his three past albums, Zachary Hay is finally releasing a self-titled LP. When Scissor Tail Editions first discovered his music, they were floored by his stream-of-consciousness approach to acoustic guitar. A very playful, innocent and intuitive flow of ideas created some incredibly poignant songs, feeling as if they already existed and rose from oblivion— preformed. This album, like his others, would fit nicely alongside Willie Lane, Jandek, MV & EE, Tashi Dorji and Loren Connors. Or imagine if John Fahey and Jack Rose were stripped of their deep knowledge of blues music and were distilled down to pure melody and feel, they may have made similar choices on the guitar as Zachary Hay here. This album is the most sincere album of contemporary guitar music Scissor Tail has heard. His perfect, simple technique adds a timelessness to each song that could be vaguely described as “American Primitive”—a tradition that includes Charalambides, Christina Carter, and Scott Tuma, as much as Fahey and his contemporaries.
