KINGS OF THE FXXXXX SEA - 'DEATH DEALER'

Formats
  • PL03 - 7"
Details

“There is no way back into the past; the choice, as Wells once said, is the Universe - or nothing. Though men and civilizations may yearn for rest, for the dream of the lotus-eaters, that is a desire that merges imperceptibly into death.” • Arthur C. Clarke, Interplanetary Flight 1950 It would be incredibly easy for Chet Weise, Sara Nelson and Poni Silver to lean back onto their pedigree of seasoned Devil’s business blues based punk projects (Top of the Class cliff-notes Immortal Lee County Killers, Little Killers, Quadrajets, The Ettes…) but if you thought garage rock was what you were going to get from this trio of expectation-defying leather bound soul mates, then you don’t know Kings of the Fucking Sea. Allow me: The Kings are melted metal poetry, spirituality and explorations of The Riff pulsating under a cosmic slop of fuzz, dive bombing guitar solos, and snare rolls; equal parts Frazetta, Blackmore, and LSD spiked rides on Space Mountain. Sonically and lyrically we’re in full interstellar apocalypse mode here, these tunes melt into weighted liquid time.. They’re heavy, searing and strictly for the heads. Both tracks on this Plant Life debut interplay and intersect, two separate and complete stories that combine into one larger narrative. This is the soundtrack to your next cloven hoofed horse ride through space and time. There is never need to exhume and exploit ghostly glories. Kings of the Fucking Sea ably prove that jamming your foot on the gas, leaving the blue dot behind and never reflecting on your pillars of salt is the only way forward

**BACK IN STOCK!!** Toronto’s Kiwi Jr. presents Football Money: a dispatch stitched out of fragments, a lustrous twelve-string paint-job unraveling ten booksmart tracks in under thirty minutes. A product of two years of labor, a monument to work-life balance, the record is not unattractively scarred by its circumstance : recorded by nightfall in dormant studios, friends and enemies drafted as backup singers and engineers, Football Money untidily fuses the yin of work with the yang of life, chronicling a dual-existence, unkempt instrumentalists moonlighting as undercompensated administrators by the harsh fluorescent light of day, borne back ceaselessly into the Greater Toronto Area by night. Built from the clay of the day-to-day—as attentive to the complexities of a sporting salary cap as to the mystery of love; to the burden of Toronto rent as the reality of ruin—it’s a record of modern creation, lyrics text-wrapped in Excel spreadsheet cells, Rickenbackers detuned to the frequency of a blue-screen migraine. Kiwi kritiks delineate influences like sections of the cow—the rump: jangle; the loin: punk—and seem set on referring Football Money to the criminal court with the Modern Lovers and the Kinks cc’d but ultimately unable to prove intent. But Kiwi Jr. conjure what we think about when one thinks about Patricia Highsmith paperbacks, Peel Session Comps, and pitchers of cheap domestic : Football Money is a laser cold hit.

More dates in the UK, Europe and US are yet to be announced. Ut is a radical rock group founded by Nina Canal, Jacqui Ham and Sally Young in Dec ’78. Originating in the downtown NYC No Wave scene and inheritors of the collision between rock, free jazz and the avant-garde, Ut exploded the rigidity of conventional rock, constructing songs through collective improvisation, swapping instruments and rotating the role of singer/director. Migrating to London in 1981, Ut played with bands like The Fall and The Birthday Partyand released music on its own label Out Records, including Live at The Venue in 1982, the Ut EP in 1984, the Confidential 12” in 1985 and their first studio LP Conviction in 1986. Ut became a favourite of BBC's John Peel and recorded sessions for his show in 1984, 1985 and 1987. Joining forces with Blast First in 1987, they released a compilation of live performances called Early Live Life that same year and the highly critically acclaimed In Gut's House in 1988, which made the year’s NME ‘Top 50 Albums’. The album Griller followed in 1989, engineered by label mate Steve Albini, who shared Ut's raw aesthetic and captured the band’s intensity. Ut disbanded in 1990, but began performing again in 2010. The band has been reissuing its entire remastered catalogue, available on vinyl, CD and digital download, on Out Records through Forte Distribution. The reissues have so far included the Ut and Confidential 12” EPs in November 2017, Ut Live at The Venue in April 2018, Early Live Life in November 2018 and Conviction in April 2019.

?With In Gut?s House, Ut has scraped and droned one of the finest underground-rock albums ... The tightly interwoven, firmly focused sound that results is rich, spooky, urgent and quite unexpectedly beautiful.? ? Mark Jenkins, The Washington Post

?In Gut?s House, from beginning to end, is a chance seized and transported?. Their vision is a total vision. Ut make unreasonably adult music, with raw complex emotions? There?s no one like them.? ? Mark Sinker, NME

The thirteen songs on youbet’s debut hit like relentless bursts of color. Musically adventurous and lyrically intimate, writer Nick Llobet’s vocals lilt, hiss and command attention. His vision is fully Formed on Compare & Despair, driven by equal parts humor and melancholy. Its bright, shocking cover art depicts a cast of psychotropic cartoon characters, each representing a different song. Raised in Davie, Florida, by his Cuban immigrant father and firstgeneration Italian American mother who divorced, Llobet sensed chaos lurking around every corner. youbet’s sound captures that disorder, a backwards world where the adults act like children and kids are on their own to maintain any semblance of order. Compare & Despair sounds like returning to your hometown to rewrite the narrative of your youth with attitude and a confetti cannon. Recently arriving in New York, Llobet discovered music as a creative and therapeutic outlet. He began writing obsessively. “It’s my way of getting lost,” says Llobet. Depositing what he made on a Bandcamp page, the result was an assortment of disparate ingredients: the sound of his laugh tape-sped to surreality, a birthday song about carnitas for his step mother, fuzzed-out rockers that snuff out before they seem to begin. And then there were these beautiful, complete compositions that recalled the ingenious simplicity of Big Star or Elliott Smith. His page caught the attention of Ava Luna drummer and engineer Julian Fader (Frankie Cosmos, Mr. Twin Sister), who shared it with collaborator Katie Von Schleicher. Katie contacted Llobet, offering to help him produce and release a full-length album. A core group was formed of Llobet, Von Schleicher, Fader and Adam Brisbin (Sam Evian, Molly Sarlé), all of whom contributed over the next year to Compare & Despair. youbet makes the music of idealized youth and time-bombed birth. With a pure aim of freedom, but forever hindered by encroaching adult reality, Compare & Despair thrives in creative conflict. A stunning debut of intent, youbet sets loose a hyperactive imagination that rides the rainbow into a black hole.
