For nearly twenty years, Bloodshot Bill has shouted, snorted, cooed and crooned his way through the wild shadowland of primitive rock and roll, touring the world and collaborated with heavyweights like Jon Spencer, King Khan, the 5678’s and Deke Dickerson. Seventeen albums and over twodozen singles later, this unstoppable Montrealeño has not slowed his manic touring and recording schedule one whit. He’s a seminal punk, a true wildman who blazes his own path to honky tonk hell with a bottomless repertoire of desperate rock and roll and insatiable R&B. That means he knows a lotta songs—not that he doesn’t wear pants. But on the right night, who knows! This spring, Bloodshot Bill will release his eighteenth album, Get Loose Or Get Lost, his second for Memphis’ Goner Records. He will be touring everywhere, continuing his twenty-year rampage with a new record and a new slew of shows—do not miss it! “He’s a throwback to the wild ’50s / ’60s: part Stompin’ Tom, part Charlie Feathers, part Elvis, part Hasil Adkins, and these sixteen tracks of his one-man primitive rock and roll pretty much cements him as a bona-fide legend.” —50thirdand3rd.com, on Come And Get Your Love Right Now “Catchy, fun, and sultry.”—Maximumrocknroll

On her new album Sister Dynamite, L.A. punk icon Alice Bag confronts some of the most pervasive problems troubling the world today: unchecked privilege and willful ignorance, systemic inequality and fragile masculinity. Her third solo effort and first release for In The Red Records, the album also offers an unbridled celebration of community and the undeniable power in embracing one’s own truth. In her impassioned push for freedom of all kinds, Bag endlessly transmits a raw and exhilarating energy, ultimately transforming each song into a much-needed antidote to numbness or despair. The follow-up to 2018’s Blueprint—named one of the best albums of the year by NPR Music—Sister Dynamite marks a thrilling return to the full-throttle punk that Bag pioneered with her legendary first-wave punk band, The Bags. With its breakneck velocity and galvanizing melodies, the album’s kinetic sound was partly inspired by Bag’s work in producing the latest record by Chicana punk band Fea. “All their songs are rockers, and it made me want to make an album that’s upbeat all the way through,” she says. To achieve that force-of-nature intensity, Bag teamed up with her core group of musicians, including guitarist Sharif Dumani and bassist David O. Jones. Co-produced by Bag and her longtime collaborator Lysa Flores (who plays rhythm guitar and sings backing vocals on several songs), Sister Dynamite finds Candace P.K. Hansen and Rikki “Styxx” Watson trading off on drums, each lending her distinct musicality to the album’s potent rhythms. Throughout Sister Dynamite, Bag reveals her incredible ability to turn nuanced political statement into impossibly catchy punk songs. Raised in East Los Angeles, she first discovered her facility with the grammar of punk upon co-founding The Bags as a teenager in the late ’70s (an endeavor that saw her featured in Penelope Spheeris’s seminal punk documentary, The Decline Of Western Civilization). Along with playing in a series of groundbreaking bands over the years (including Castration Squad, Cholita, and Las Tres), Bag has devoted much of the past few decades to her work as an educator, activist, feminist archivist, and author of two acclaimed books: her 2011 memoir Violence Girl (now required reading in gender and musicology courses throughout the country) and 2015’s Pipe Bomb For The Soul (a self-published title based on her experiences volunteering in postrevolutionary Nicaragua).

Creating what Iggy Pop described to Jim Jarmusch as “symphonies for people that don’t have a lot of time,” Sarah Lipstate has emerged as an innovative and defining voice in the world of music under the name Noveller. Wielding a guitar as her main instrument, Lipstate has pioneered a transcendent approach to composition through her mastery and integration of effects pedals and technology. Forming unexpected sonic routes, her songs are vivid and cinematic, telling intricate tales with each tone and swell. Raised on a strict piano technique, the discovery of the guitar late in her teens allowed for an escape from formalism and unlocked the hidden realms of her creativity. Taking an antitheoretical approach, suddenly music was no longer a series of notes, rests, and time signatures, but a means of intuitive expression. Her deepened interest in experimental music, fuelled by the discovery of the bold noise of Sonic Youth, the epic scope of Glenn Branca, the delicate formularies of Brian Eno and the no wave discordance of Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, only furthered to inspire. A yearning to explore and feed that creativity took her from Louisiana to Austin, then Brooklyn to LA. Arrow is her first album since the move to the edge of the canyons of Los Angeles, and one can hear the destabilizing effect this had on her in the music. Out of her comfort zone in a new city, with a rolling expanse in front of her and an urban sprawl over her shoulder, Lipstate built her new album as she contemplated this change in her life. With her ability to add such unique sounds and textures, Lipstate has been sought out as a frequent collaborator, recently writing songs with Iggy Pop and performing as a member of his band on his worldwide tour. Past partners in crime have ranged from JG Thirlwell to Lee Ranaldo and she has performed as part of Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Army, Nick Zinner’s “41 Strings”, Ben Frost’s “Music for 6 Guitars”, and Glenn Branca’s 100 guitar ensemble. She has also toured in support of big fans in St. Vincent, Wire, U.S. Girls, The Jesus Lizard and Helium.

Dreaming doesn’t come easy these shadowed days, which is why Strange To Explain by Woods is such a welcome turning of new colors. It presents an extended moment of sweet reflection for the 15-year-old band, bouncing back to earth as something hopeful and weird and resolute. Like everything else they’ve recorded, it sounds exactly like themselves, but with subtly different shades and breaths and rhythmic feels and everything else that changes, the natural march of time and the intentional decisions of the musicians moving in what feels like an uncommonly organic alignment. “Strange To Explain trades in a different kind of dependability, maintaining a steady connection to the voice on the other side of the record needle. After quickly recording and releasing 2017’s Love Is Love in response to the tumultuous events of their (and our) 2016, Jeremy Earl and company took their time with what came next. Parenthood arrived, as did a short songwriting pause. The band went bicoastal when Jarvis Taveniere headed west. And when they returned to their posts, there on the other side of this particular mirror, they made this, an album that not only catches and holds and shares the light in yet another new way, but recognizes that there’s still light to be caught, which is also no small thing. “A bend beyond the last bend beyond, Woods keep on changing, thoughtfully and beautifully. The colors were always there, like trees blossoming just slightly differently each season, a synesthetic message coded in slow-motion. Recorded in Stinson Beach, the kind of place that seems like an AI simulation of an idyllic northern California coastal escape, the familiar jangling guitars recede to the background. John Andrews’s warm keyboards and twining Mellotron rise around Earl’s songs and dance across the chord changes like warm sunlight off the Pacific. The music feels a karmic landmass away from the creepiness of the uncanny valley.” —Jesse Jarnow

JODY HARRIS & ROBERT QUINE - 'ESCAPE'

Formats
  • SORC1009 - LP
    748079898721
Details

The album known as Escape was originally released on the New York No Wave label in 1981, and has never been reissued in any form since. Sorcerer presents a first-time reissue of this very special recording this May. Remastered by Mikey Young and fully authorised by Jody Harris and Robert’s brother, Van, it is to be reissued in an edition of 600 copies. Jody made his name on the NY scene mainly through his work with the legendary avant-funksters, THE CONTORTIONS, while Robert Quine, who sadly passed away in 2004, was one of the most acclaimed guitarists of his day, noted for his work with RICHARD HELL & THE VOIDOIDS, LOU REED, TOM WAITS, JOHN ZORN, MATTHEW SWEET and many more. The two recorded Escape in Quine’s apartment with a whopping budget of $7 (that’s what it cost Quine for the tape). The album sees them both engaging in guitar duels over a primitive drum machine, a kind of skeletal minimal-synth with avant-guitar excursions overhead. Outward-bound yet wholly listenable, the five tracks represent a great lost gem of the NYC underground scene of the day. This edition also comes with an inner sleeve featuring liner notes from Jody Harris detailing the recording, as well as exclusive photographs of the two. Recommended to fans of NO WAVE, RHYS CHATHAM, SUICIDE and the music of ROBERT QUINE and JODY HARRIS, of course.

IKE YARD - 'S/T'

Formats
  • SV046 - LP

Details

*BACK IN STOCK* Ike Yard remain a legendary band of early ’80s New York City—at once immensely influential, yet obscured by a far-too-brief initial phase. Their debut EP, the dark and absorbing Night After Night, sounds almost like a different group, so rapidly would Ike Yard evolve towards the calmly menacing electro throb of their self-titled LP. Originally released on Factory in 1982, the album put Ike Yard’s indelible mark on the synth-driven experimental rock scene then emerging all over the planet. While historical analogues would be Cabaret Voltaire’s Red Mecca or Front 242’s Geography, opening track “M. Kurtz” makes starkly clear that Ike Yard is a far heavier proposition. With a thick porridge of bass, ringing guitar and strangled/stunted layers of voice, these six pieces are densely packed and perversely danceable. “Loss” sounds like a minimal techno track that could have been made last week, while “Kino” combines Soviet-era imagery with sparse soundscapes à la African Head Charge’s Environmental Studies. Ike Yard somehow pull off the toughest trick in modern music: making repetition hypnotically compelling through subtle variation. The effect of Ike Yard’s first LP can be heard in many genres—from industrial dance labels like Wax Trax to electro-punk bands and innumerable European groups (Lucrate Milk, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, etc.). The fact that the cover artwork does not include any photos of the band, but rather features the original catalogue number (FACT A SECOND) only further illustrates the release’s importance and Ike Yard’s timeless mystique
