THE GOD IN HACKNEY - 'SMALL COUNTRY ECLIPSE'

Formats
  • ASP0028 - LP (COLOURED)
Details

The God in Hackney’s new LP, ‘Small Country Eclipse’ is coming in as the Brexit themed anti-genre album of the year; channeling musical diversity via Camberwell Now, Wire, Lemon Kittens & Coil it follows their debut ‘Cave Moderne’ which Andrew Weatherall charted as his number one album of the year for NTS Radio and which Thurston Moore and Byron Coley described as “a very swell blob of UK art-rock of a deeply friend nature.” Number 1 record of 2020 (Colloquium for Unpopular Culture) “An LP that felt of the year. Mordant music: stuttering, dread, black humour. A record that felt truly independent, beholden to no genre, out of step with all centres and signposted nodes.” BBC RADIO 6 - repeat plays from Steve Lamacq & Gilles Peterson. Featured guests on The Watt From Pedro Show presented by Mike Watt (Minutemen, The Stooges) “There’s a poignant exasperation to this album, a humorous and offbeat meander through the miasma of a Britain blighted by Brexit intoxication and national confusion. Imagine Wire but less punk, more ‘Neolithic rock’” headsonsticks.co.uk Andy Cooke – vocals, lyrics, synthesizers, piano, guitars, fire extinguisher. Dan Fox – piano, trombone, guitar, other musicians, voice, cello. Ashley Marlowe – the drum kit, guitar, pedals, keyboards. BOBHOWLA - 'EVERYTHING IS WRONG, BUT IT'S ALRIGHT'

  • NXN004LP - LP

Details

*TRANSPARENT BLUE VINYL* During an unprecedented yet poignant global situation, Bobhowla’s debut album EVERYTHING’S WRONG, BUT IT’S ALRIGHT serves to soundtrack our daily challenges we all face since the start of the pandemic. Recorded and produced by Rod Jones at Post Electric Studio, this 11-track strong collection of songs bring together a wider scope of influences than usually found in any particular group’s output. Years of solo acoustic performances around the north west have honed an acoustic base into more gritted tones, alongside folk, electronica and dream-pop influences. The single Million $ Man is as direct as a song can be, with crunchy guitars harking back to simpler times of loud choruses and powerful anthems. Their debut album is the culmination of recording sessions with Rod Jones (Idlewild) at Post Electric Studio. Working together to form 11 tracks, an accumulation of songwriting ideas spanning years. Million § Man is the album’s example of taking a staple live favourite and letting the studio process completely re-map the track’s direction. The once folky-skiffle ditty is now a hard-hitting, anthemic call to arms, complete with a crafty hook and chorus to match. Behind the music, hides deeper meaning. In what singer Howard Doupé believes to be first - a track dealing with the emotional complexities of a life, delicately touched with health-laden ‘survivor’s guilt.’ Like so many songs before, Million $ Man is an upbeat indie-pop tune that masks a sobering and very rarely explored subject matter. It’s an honest and frank perception that attempts to deal with issues that will resonate with a particular section of our community. In a daringly brave move, Doupé expresses a personal narrative with the track, firmly cementing the album’s themes in real life matters.

VAMPA - 'PLUGGET'

Formats
  • OTD009 - 7"

Details

Vampa were just kids, 13-14 years old, when they recorded and released their raw and very Iron Maidenesque 45 back in 1982. DIY all by themselves… The lyrics (sung in Swedish) is the ultimate hate for school-anthem. The boredom and frustration of (barely) teenage kids totally sick of school and its teachers has rarely been captured in a better and more enjoyable way. Even though the lyrics are in Swedish the language that grabs the listener as the needle is dropped into the groove is universal. Original 45 is near impossible to find. On The Dole Records found the members, got loads of rare photos that fills up the printed inner sleeve. Comes with new original artwork by Swedish artist Oscar Nordblom, the guy behind the notorious Jobcentre Rejects-drawings File under: ”beyond essential to any serious rock’n’roll fan”.

ROCK SET - 'PITEA KOMMUN'

Details

Ultra rare 1979 KBD-style punk rock from Piteå – a small town situated in the very north of Sweden. Rock Set are buzzing of small town boredom and fuck authority attitude. The name Rock Set was inspired by UK pubrockers Dr Feelgood’s Roxette -a few years before Per Gessle took the Roxette moniker to the top of the Billboard chart. “Piteå Kommun” never reached the Billboard chart but over time it has generated a cult following amongst punk rock aficionados all over the world. Original copies are nowadays changing hands for hundreds of dollars. A fact easily understood when hearing Rock Set’s perfect mixture of punk-, mod- and garage-rock. In the late fall of 2020 OTD traveled to Piteå in order to find the members of Rock Set. A license deal was made and in true OTD fashion the sound recordings were remastered and carefully restored. Many photos from the band members’ private photo albums are seen on the printed inner sleeve. Liner notes by Peter Kagerland. Turquoise vinyl. AXXE - 'THROUGH THE NIGHT'

Formats
  • OTD011 - 7"
    7350107320239
Details

Axxe came from Lubbock, Texas and in early 1979 they unleashed their lone single. The outside world was -at the time- unfortunately not listening, but what a record it was… Rip-shreddin’ proto speed-metal with energic guitar riffs to die for. The attitude and raw performance were total punk but Axxe sure knew how to nail a guitar solo -and they used cowbell. Original 45 rpm vinyl is nowadays near impossible to find and it has been many a collector’s wet dream to one day get hold of a copy. On The Dole Records are proud to present a fully licensed deluxe reissue of this US Jobcentre Rejects styled-nugget. Housed in a deluxe picture sleeve that comes with a printed inner sleeve filled with many rare and previously unpublished photos plus an interview with Axxe main man and guitar-slinger Darren Welch conducted by Mojo’s Kieron Tyler. Green color vinyl. File under: ”beyond essential to any serious rock’n’roll fan”.

PAINTED SHRINES - 'HEAVEN & HOLY'

Formats
  • WOODSIST100 - LP
    733102718817
Details

Jeremy Earl (Woods) and Glenn Donaldson (Skygreen Leopards, The Reds, Pinks & Purples) met sometime in the mid-oughts and bonded over a love of tambourines and DIY sounds. They shared many stages since, and their first serious collaboration was on the 2011 Woods album Sun & Shade. Around 2018, Earl was restless in upstate NY and accepted an invite to record in Donaldson’s studio in an undisclosed rural coastal town in Northern California. In a week they emerged with nearly an album’s worth of hazy folk-rock and psych-pop with touches of more outré lofi noise. Jeff Moller (The Papercuts) added bass, and they put the finishing touches on during quarantine. Heaven And Holy ebbs and flows like coastal fog between songs and dreamy instrumentals, splitting the difference between The Clean’s Unknown Country and The Byrds Fifth Dimension.

MARC BARRECA - 'THE EMPTY BRIDGE'

Formats
  • PoL01.2021 - CD
    700261483986
Details

With The Empty Bridge, Marc Barreca again exploits his distinct talent for translating landscapes into sound. The music was created in and reflects the influence of contrasting environments—the beauty and stillness of the Cascade Mountains and the muted industrial nightscape of the Duwamish Waterway, complete with its massive, nowcondemned, empty freeway bridge. The pieces are sculpted from layers of synthesized and sampled instruments, field recordings and processed vinyl. With these sources, Barreca achieves a level of compositional sophistication that deftly combines elements of ambient, drone, noise, and sound art with contrapuntal lines running above and below the dense and shifting aural environments. Composed during a period of tranquil isolation—isolation created by a global pandemic, a broken concrete link to the city, and a remote mountain cabin—The Empty Bridge evokes immersive, evolving, contrasting landscapes.
