The discovery and musical re-imagining of Mirabel Lomer – an artist’s unheard world which is emerging from the shadows into the light. Mirry is one of those rare projects where the story seems so absolutely magical, that it’s almost impossible to imagine such beauty being lost in the shadows for so long. 30 years ago, Edinburgh based musician Tom Fraser was helping with the house clearance after his grandfather’s death and found an old scratched Transco record left out on the street. He took it home where it sat on a shelf for years until one day during lockdown, he gave it a play - and a whole world opened up to him - his Great Aunt Mirry had recorded a number of piano compositions which she had kept secret from her family. Since then, Tom has been re-working and re-mixing her compositions with his brother-in- law Simon Tong (The Verve, The Good the Bad and the Queen, and The Magnetic North) and together with project curator Kirsteen McNish they hope that this secret life will now reach beyond Mirry’s own four walls. Mirabel Lomer was born in 1906 to a military family and for the best part of her life stayed at home in Ireland looking after her elderly parents. In the early 1950s she became a paid companion to another elderly couple in Wiltshire, both of whom she nursed until they died. While most of her life was spent caring for others it also transpired that Mirry had written music (despite the fact that as a young woman, her father actively discouraged her playing music in the family home). In quiet rebellion and creative escape, she composed this piano music secretly and her nephew and confidant Geoffrey captured it on his tape recorder. Like untold numbers of women whose creative lives didnt find an outlet, Mirry never received any accolades for her work but enjoyed the act of creating work for herself. She died in the 1980s but the story of Mirry’s music and secret life is still unfolding. The resulting album “Mirry” by Fraser and Tong is a celebration of Mirry’s work and a call and response to her original recordings with her family members – almost as if she were still in a room with them. Since then Tong has retrieved whatever else he could find in the family attic. Hundreds of Stereoscopic slides, super-8 films, photography, stories, poetry and further recordings were found, all recorded by her nephew, (now in his nineties) who believes Mirry would be delighted that her work would be heard many years down the line. Tong said “This project hopes to shine a light on carers, and how ones creative work can live on and continue to reverberate and evolve long after it’s original conception”

THOM MORECROFT - 'THE BEAST (LIVE)'

Formats
  • NXN003S - 7"
Details

Thom Morecroft’s new live single 'The Beast' is unafraid to show the scars. Liverpool, UK — Thom Morecroft’s new 7 inch single ‘The Beast’ has already been described by writer Paul Du Noyer (NME, Q, Mojo, Word) as “that killer finale”. Recorded live at Studio2, Parr Street, it captures the Shrewsbury-born singer-songwriter closing the launch of his latest album in his hometown of Liverpool. Following the release of the rich and layered ‘Feng Shui and the Sushi’ album, ‘The Beast’ brings everything back home to an acoustic guitar, the raw voice and a captive audience. A personal story of family alcoholism and mistaken identity, it captures a young artist at his most direct and vulnerable; giving just a little too much away. After a UK album tour cut short (and the thrill of a huddled audience for many a distant memory) Thom wanted to reach out with a song that could only really be heard live. Available on 7” Vinyl and across all digital platforms. For more information, promo requests, or to arrange an interview, get in touch via details at the top.

Michael Price, one of the UK’s most sought after composers (Unforgotten, Sherlock, Dracula), releases the original soundtrack to Craig Roberts’ (Submarine, Just Jim) Eternal Beauty. Price’s score, as his so often do, serves as a narrator, a character helping to guide us through the true highs and lows of Jane’s (Sally Hawkins) rarely uneventful life. Price’s signature sweeping strings, underpinned by piano and a beautifully restrained use of sound design ensures that whilst the score drives the story forwards it never distracts from that which is unfolding before our eyes. "A soundtrack that provides the rocket fuel for a story that unzips our understanding of ‘normal’" - Adrian Bate, Eternal Beauty Producer

DEAD SEA APES, ADAM STONE, BLACK TEMPEST - 'DATALAND'

Formats
  • CFUL0191 - LP
Details

** NOW SHIPPING** Cardinal Fuzz and Feeding Tube Records are pleased to announce ‘DATALAND’, a collaboration between Dead Sea Apes, Black Tempest and Adam Stone achieved mainly through internet data transfer during the Covid lockdown of 2020. Insistent, evolving electronic sounds encounter a variety of guitars and percussion, from the clockwork kosmische of 'Lost Hours' to the stumbling nosie dub of 'Shop Soiled', while Adam Stone's words meditate on life in the post-industrial west, our increasingly atomised and data-driven society and its logical conclusion in a corporatised dystopia. 'Dataland' is a meditation upon the average existence of a 'developed-world' human in the early 21st century. Whilst not struggling with the harsh physical demands of industrial labour as we did in the recent past, our plight continues to embody the melancholia and confusion of alienation. Under the bewildering complexity of rationalised social and economic systems, we may indeed have become unwitting prisoners within, what the sociologist Max Weber termed, "the iron cage of bureaucracy" - tripping the minutes away in a daily pantomime of data-driven surrealism. This six song collection is a fusion of electronica, monologue, 'real drums' and guitar, and was recorded at various locations in sad old England over the last two years or so. An almost psychedelic sense of puzzlement, nausea and fatigue accompanies being lost in the omnipresent number-generating machines and anti-human modelling systems that now run our world. This is the realisation that defines the essence of the album - that your life is now only as real as what is displayed on the screen of your constant technological companion.

DEAD SEA APES & NIK RAYNE - 'NIGHT LANDS'

Formats
  • CFUL0156 - LP
Details

**Now Shipping**Hot on the heels of last year’s drone masterpiece, The Free Territory (FTR 457), comes this hot bowl of noodles from Manchester’s most elegantly wasted quintet. And while there might be apt comparisons to be made to some of the best current psych purveyors, the central thrill provided by these sounds makes me think of naught but prime Bay Area ballroom scene acid spew. The guitar lines unspool like electrical cables filled with acid punch, and remain crackling in the air for moments longer than you imagine they can remain afloat. The keys have a bit of a German overtone, but it’s the same sort of one that led to the flash of Popol Vuh’s United Artist albums (which are themselves, at heart, paeans to the Bay.) The sound here is the sort of thing true believers recall as the highest moments of Man in live concert flight. Raging, raving guitars to soak your soul once and for all. Don’t fear the downpour. Revel in it. -Byron Coley, 2020 As darkness falls, once familiar territory is rendered alien and foreboding; full of weird and terrifying possibilities. These are Night Lands. Recorded live in the rehearsal room last December, the newly expanded 4 piece Dead Sea Apes lock into spooky nocturnal grooves, augmented by Nik Rayne (The Myrrors) who was over in the UK for the recording of 'Night Lands' Night Lands is comprised of 3 off-the-cuff improvised pieces, where Dead Sea Apes effortlessly mind meld with Rayne. Taking for a deep knowledge and love which you can hear seep through - At times Amon Duul (both!) at others times Earth with touches of what you imagine the Velvet Underground sounded like in the DOM - all touched with the presence of Bo Anders Persson.

MAGIC ROUNDABOUT - 'SNEAKY FEELIN''

Formats
  • TMR709 - 7"
    813547029942
Details

Like so many other disenfranchised kids in the heady days of mid-eighties United Kingdom, Magic Roundabout came armed with leather jackets, charity shop instruments, singles by The Fall and Buzzcocks, good haircuts, a healthy VU obsession and a little psychedelic inspiration. Influenced into existence at early gigs by The Jesus and Mary Chain and Shop Assistants, The Roundies wanted to change the world or at the very least make some noise, shake things up and be a part of the happening. The gang established a clubhouse in early 1986 and began rehearsing, recording and gigging. Playing a ton of legendary shows with the likes of The Pastels, The Blue Aeroplanes, Spacemen 3, Loop , My Bloody Valentine, Inspiral Carpets and picking up a bunch of fans along the way. Rumor has it that Noel Gallagher roadied their final show. There was one song released - She’s a Waterfall Parts 1 and 2 on Mark Webber’s (Pulp) Oozing Through The Ozone Layer cassette compilation - and that’s it. There were also talks of a flexi-disc that, for whatever reason, never saw the light of day. But by the end of the 80s, the gang had all gone their separate ways and the recordings along with so many other things were thought to be lost forever… Now, these 1987 recordings recently unearthed by Ian Masters (Pale Saints) and Third Man Records and given the “treatment” by Warren Defever are presented to you lucky ones as the debut single by Magic Roundabout. 34 years too late or perfectly steeped and presented at just the right moment in history? Tune in, turn on and make up your own mind. Enjoy the trip.

NATHANIEL MELLORS - 'HORRIFIC OBJECT'

Formats
  • ASP0029 - 7"
Details

‘Horrific Object’ is a limited debut 7” single by Nathaniel Mellors (The God In Hackney, Skill 7 Stamina 12, Conemelt). Released jointly by Box Editions (Los Angeles) and Junior Aspirin Records (Hampshire, U.K.) The track ‘Horrific Object’ fuses Nick Cave & The Birthday Party’s swaggering jazz-blues pulse and the lean menace of early PJ Harvey with a vocal narrative reminiscent of an early 20th century horror short story. (Think: Arthur Machen on vibes.) The song concerns a writer who is given the eponymous ‘horrific object’: a thing which is somehow encoded with a critique of the writer’s very existence - “all the air around you is infected”. The song takes aim at the presumptions of cultural ownership, inspired in part by “Exiting the Vampire Castle”, an essay on class and culture by the influential thinker Mark Fisher. ‘Horrific Object’ was originally written and recorded to accompany a sculpture of the same name which Mellors made for the 2020 Busan Biennale exhibition in South Korea. The AA side, ‘Irrigating Hell’, is about another kind of horror – that of displacement. The song ruminates on a move to Los Angeles and combines imagery of ecological, car and career-based catastrophe with a more industrial and textured landscape reminiscent of Throbbing Gristle. As 1/4 of The God In Hackney, Mellors released ‘Small Country Eclipse’ which was The Colloquium for Unpopular Culture’s Number One album of 2020, with repeat plays on BBC RADIO 6 from Steve Lamacq & Gilles Peterson. The God in Hackney’s ‘Cave Moderne’ was made Number One album of 2014 by Andrew Weatherall for NTS Radio.
