SAGAN - 'ANTI ARK'

Formats
  • SEELAND537 - CD
    753762053721
Details

Sagan is Blevin Blectum (Blectum From Blechdom), Jay Lesser (live touring member of Matmos) and Wobbly (collaborator with Negativland, Thurston Moore Group, Dieter Moebius & Tim Story, Fred Frith, Huun-Huur-Tu, etc)—three solo artists from the San Francisco Bay Area’s legendarily weird electronic music scene, coming together in shared love of Space. Fifteen years in the making, their second album Anti-Ark arrives—a recursive love letter to the early decades of space travel and the High Frontier, when the lines between hard scientific research and emotional wanderlust melted away to reveal an optimistic vision for mankind’s shared future. Explosively kinetic, searingly romantic, the album draws on the trio’s formative influences: the electronic space music which Carl Sagan’s 1980 TV program Cosmos brought to a global audience. Sagan channels the Cosmos sound universe into new compositions, performed live and then folded in on themselves through countless edits into a molecular quilt. The album’s micro-bursts of ambient, meditative and kosmiche are woven into new and denser signals— flying by as if picked up by some satellite hurtling through every civilized universe, moving faster than known physics allows. Any given ten second stretch of Anti-Ark contains a greater density of sound design than might be typically deployed over the course of entire tracks—an attempted inventory not of the objects within the ecosystem, but of the relationships between them. Set against today’s closing windows of opportunity, each sound here contains its own melody and serves as a note within a larger one, a stream of that information which needs to be sung before it can be known.

GUIDED BY VOICES - 'EARTH MAN BLUES'

Is it really a musical?! The 33rd Guided By Voices album, Earth Man Blues, is a magical cinematic rock album, full of dramatic and surreal twists and turns. Lyrics and liner notes trace the growth of young Harold Admore Harold through a coming of age and a reckoning with darkness. Vivid scenes appear: snapshots of youth, fantastical nightmares, unknown worlds. The music hasn’t softened a bit. One will hear the impossibly perfect melodies and word play that you expect from Robert Pollard, with the band playing at peak-heavy. “Trust Them Now” rocks like an instant classic, “The Batman Sees The Ball” is lean, mean rock muscle. Opener “Made Man” tears and slashes at the ears and heart. Sweeping, colossal tracks like “Lights Out (In Memphis, Egypt)” and “Dirty Kid School” stretch far beyond the ordinary vocabulary of rock. Doug Gillard’s brilliant guitar playing explodes out of the speakers. The rhythm section of Kevin March and Mark Shue, always strong and reliable, has grown into a breathing composite organism. Along with Bobby Bare, Jr on rhythm guitar, they drive the songs and make one’s head shake. Producer Travis Harrison ties the talents of the band together, once again recorded remotely and individually, pandemic-style. This group brings to life the sounds in Pollard’s technicolor imagination.

SARAH LOUISE - 'EARTH BOW'

At first glance, Sarah Louise might seem an unlikely candidate to credit technology as inspiration for her new album, Earth Bow. After all, she has lived in rural Appalachia for the last decade, foraging numerous species of wild mushroom, concocting medicine from plants she gathers, and performing what she terms “Earth Practices” to deepen her relationship with the natural world. But it is precisely her ability to find connections between false binaries that makes this album so novel and richly immersive. Louise conceived Earth Bow as an interconnected ecosystem, meant to evolve, interact and grow. Known for her inventive guitar playing, vocal harmonies and electronic experiments, it was her use of the SP-404SX sampler that became a primary inspiration for the album’s woven nature. “Improvising with the 404 during live shows allows me to collaborate with the music as a living system, almost the way generative music works,” she says. “I kept finding more and more samples that worked together and realized I wanted to connect the entire record—and that there were many ways it could be connected.” Through this process, what began as eight core songs blossomed into two sweeping suites. Samples—denizens of her electronic forest—move around the record with changing context like words in a sestina or phrases in the I Ching, revealing new connections with each listen. Mesmeric sounds abound on Earth Bow, from analog synth tones, to digitally manipulated sonics that she stretches and layers with a painterly touch. These electronic sounds inhabit the same environment as field recordings, ceremonial percussion, guitars and empathic vocals, weaving together her vast and borderless influences into an enveloping world. “I want this record to take people on a journey through the wonders of our incredible planet, to help people feel held by the mysteries of nature,” she enthuses. “I believe music can heal.” After a string of celebrated releases on Thrill Jockey, Sarah Louise is self-releasing Earth Bow on her new imprint of the same name.

Details

Formerly of the legendary band Liquid Liquid, Dennis Young is proud to announce his new vinyl recording titled ‘Open Roads.’ The new record is a proud testament of Young’s talent and ability to expand the boundaries of his music, excelling in all facets. The vocal acoustic recording consists of 14 new and original tracks, accompanied by cello/viola and bass guitar. The exciting new recording shows that Dennis Young isn’t able to be locked into any boundary, and is continuing to surprise new listeners whilst satisfying his current audience with the sounds they have grown to adore, and embrace. Best known as the marimba player and percussionist for Liquid Liquid, Dennis Young is a self-taught musician who started his music journey at a young age, picking up drums first – which led him to other instruments, later on. Liquid Liquid was an American no wave and dance-punk group that only lasted 3 years, but released many legendary hits like ‘Cavern’ and ‘Optimo’ which have granted the band a cult-like status within music history. Originated in New York in 1980, the quartet consisted of members Sal Principato, Scott Hartley, Dennis Young, and Richard McGuire. Dennis Young believes ‘Open Roads’ will become one of your favourite albums as it easy to consume in one sitting, whilst being intoxicating enough to draw you back in for continuous listens.
