**x120 copies ltd clear w. red splatter** Los Angeles, California—Divine Horsemen, the fiery, eclectic ’80s group that rode the unique vocal chemistry of Chris Desjardins (a.k.a. Chris D.) and Julie Christensen, return to the musical stage with Hot Rise Of An Ice Cream Phoenix, a collection of all-new recordings. Co-produced by Desjardins and Craig Parker Adams (who engineered I Used To Be Pretty, the 2019 release by Chris D.’s groundbreaking ’70s punk band the Flesh Eaters), this new 13-track album comprises the first new music by the Horsemen in thirty-three years. Founded after the dissolution of the Flesh Eaters and launched with the 1984 Enigma Records album Time Stands Still, billed as Chris D./Divine Horseman, the band released three albums and an EP on SST Records, all of which featured the searing harmonies of Desjardins and Christensen, who were married at the time. The couple split professionally and personally just prior to the release of their January 1988 EP A Handful of Sand. However, the two musicians remained in touch over the years, and Christensen contributed vocals to five tracks on I Used To Be Pretty, which reunited the 1980 “all-star” edition of the Flesh Eaters heard on the Ruby/Slash classic A Minute To Pray, A Second To Die. By then, the idea of reviving Divine Horsemen was already percolating. Featuring onetime Divine Horsemen guitarist Peter Andrus, who had appeared on A Handful Of Sand and the 1987 album Snake Handler, and Bobby Permanent, the 2021 Divine Horsemen lineup is completed by drummer DJ Bonebrake of the incomparable L.A. band X. Hot Rise Of An Ice Cream Phoenix stands as a bracing new achievement by a distinctive musical partnership that has always marched to the beat of its own drum. Like the Flesh Eaters’ recent reunion, it’s a welcome return that plays to the group’s historic strengths.

THRESHING FLOOR - 'S/T'

Formats

Details

The music within the grooves of this platter is made for elevation. It is made for levitation. Roky Erikson’s brand of levitation. Where the soul leaves the body behind and rises up, where the body meets the soul and gives it the foundation it needs to accept the rules of the world. The Threshing Floor is that part of the farmer’s field where the crops are brought to process; grain is winnowed. The Threshing Floor has been historically thought of as MAGICAL…as both sacred and profane. As a place of cultic activities and ritual sacrifices. No crops are planted here…leaving the opportunity for the fertile flat space to become electrified at midnight, with farmworkers shakin’ it on down under the light of the moon. Ruth went to find Boaz at The Threshing Floor. She went to find food for her family. Ruth lay down with Boaz on the Threshing Floor, finding love and life. When the dawn came Ruth’s family was fed and she and Boaz were on the path to marriage. On Shavuot 2020, in the middle of a historic pandemic, a cast of renegade noisemongers (Alan Licht, Rebecca Odes, Gretchen Gonzales, Nate Young and John Olson) created a drone model of the Threshing Floor, offering a respite from the chaos of the eve, a moment to provide shelter from the storm. For twenty minutes, these witches and renegades filled the space with rumbling reverberations and souring sonic outbursts inviting the listener to lay down…as Ruth lay…to lay down and be taken away. Let the music flow on through, providing strength for the Dawn and the knowledge that the Dawn would bring. The Threshing Floor was an experimental experiment, improvising together apart during a time of plague, taking a usual time of togetherness reverberations and mediations and instead finding a unified voice by sharing ideas across currents, many miles apart, and using the time tested accompanist named chance to take the beautiful wandering vibrations and lace them together into the blanket of sound before you. Music does heal, it does strengthen. It can wash over and make alive. Please lay down with us and lose yourself to the sound of The Threshing Floor. ** 60 COPIES ONLY OF GREEN VINYL VERSION COMING TO UK**On the anniversary of his 45th year as a recording artist it seems totally appropriate (though somewhat overdue) that Ed Kuepper would release this, his first ever collection of 45’s - RPM if you will - although CD singles are also included. From the spaghetti-western influenced opener of cult-fave Also Sprach the King of Euro-disco (’86) through the baroque overtones of penultimate track All Of These Things (’96) - an overlooked classic in anyone’s language - via the coulda-been should-been of the much covered (and much coveted) The Way I Made You Feel (’92) these tracks and the other 17 collected here point to Kuepper’s seemingly effortless ability to roll out classic after classic during a decade that was arguably his most prolific. Interestingly, Kuepper; normally comfortable in his non-conformity, gave the green light for this collection to be sequenced chronologically, a first for the legendary baird. But what does Sir Ed make of this clearly commercial manoeuvre? “I didn’t mind it one bit... in fact I quite like it.” he says, from the comfort of his Oxley bunker. No exclamation mark though. He’s not that excited. But if this collection of alternative Australian anthems is not enough Herr Kuepper was feeling gracious enough to allow a second disc comprised of b-sides, ep tracks and fan faves - just the sort of stuff we Kuepper-philes crave of our idol. Covers of Bowie, Dylan, The Loved Ones and his own extensive repertoire has our Ed round out what may be his most comprehensive solo package yet and the ultimate soundtrack to Kuepper’s first decade as a solo artist; it’s a gift. But we have said enough. Lets leave the last word to Sir Ed himself. “For now I simply wish to give a very big thanks to everyone that contributed so positively to the recordings and the releases. Onwards and upwards….” Lots of love, Ed Kuepper

LAUGHING CLOWNS - 'GOLDEN DAYS / WHEN GIANTS WALKED THE EARTH'

Formats
  • PMLCGD1 - LP
Details

**CLEAR VINYL** "This is the band that I've called "the greatest live rock'n'roll band in the world ever, full stop". This is the band that made me walk out of a Birthday Party gig, because I knew there wasn't a hope in hell that Nick Cave's group, even at the height of their awesome, spontaneous powers, could follow them.” - Everett True Following the demise in 1978 of the original line-up of The Saints, guitarist Ed Kuepper returned to Australia and teamed up with his schoolyard chum and former Saints drummer, Jeffrey Wegener, embarking upon his most ambitious project to date, the Laughing Clowns. Taking inspiration from such disparate genres as free-jazz, bluegrass and krautrock the Laughing Clowns would polarise opinion in much the same manner as John Lydon did with his post-Sex Pistols outfit PiL. In reality, though, the Laughing Clowns were the logical extension of The Saints continuing the musical themes already explored on The Saints second and in particular, third album, Prehistoric Sounds. “People always misinterpreted what we were doing [in Laughing Clowns]. There were too many references to jazz. We weren’t a jazz band. I think people got fixated on some of the dissonant and atonal stuff more then ever was my intention. That stuff was easy. I know how to make something sound atonal really easily. What I want is for something really beautiful to come out of it.” - Ed Kuepper "This group in my opinion were one of the most important rock groups of the last 30 years” - Julian Cope (2006) Golden Days… is an entry-level collection of Laughing Clowns material - curated by Kuepper - and spanning the band’s entire time frame of 1979 - 1984 (as long as The Saints themselves). The classic Eternally Yours is included here as are the equally as worthy Everything That Flies, Holy Joe and more.

THE AINTS! - 'LIVE AT MARRICKVILLE BOWL'

Details

On April 27th, 2018 two days before the recording of their debut LP The Church of Simultaneous Existence, Ed Kuepper & The Aints! played the unrecorded album in its entirety to a full house at Sydney’s Marrickville Bowls Club a/k/a The Bowlo. Recorded for prosperity by super-Kuepper fans Moshcam the outstanding results are now available - albeit in limited vinyl quantities - for everyone else to hear. The Aints! had formed initially to celebrate the 40th anniversary of (I’m) Stranded, Kuepper’s first release and the debut album by The Saints, the band he had co-founded in 1973 and who courted international acclaim and infamy for their trio of classic and influential albums including (I’m) Stranded plus Eternally Yours and Prehistoric Sounds before the usual “musical differences’ reared it’s ugly head forcing the band to split late in 1978. Recruiting like-minded players in Peter Oxley (Sunnyboys), Paul Larsen Loughhead (The Celibate Rifles) plus jazzers Alister Spence and Eamon Dilworth, The Aints! pulled together a set comprising material from all three incendiary albums. However, as rehearsals developed, Kuepper - ever the restless songsmith - began to unearth even more material from that time - unrecorded material - derived from old cassettes or even just memory and dating back as far as 1969 whilst the young Ed was still in short shorts. Bit by bit, one by one these tracks developed until the realisation that there was a whole album’s worth of songs ready to record. But first, a final run through… “.. the key to the success of this album – and to these ears it is one of the finest records of the year – is not that it echoes past glories or hints at what might have been had the early version of The Saints recorded a fourth album but that it is a powerful musical statement, timeless, with its own sound and vision. Sure, it’s rock’n’roll, but who else sounds like The Aints!?” - musictrust.com

PETER BRODERICK - 'THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BRAMBLE'

** CLEAR VINYL REPRESS** Peter Broderick returns with new EP ‘The Wind That Shakes The Bramble’ on 10 September 2021. It’s the mid 1800s in Ireland, and a local poet from Limerick by the name of Robert Dwyer Joyce has written a ballad called ‘The Wind That Shakes The Barley’: … A bullet pierced my true love’s side In life’s young spring so early And on my breast in blood she died While soft winds shook the barley … The recurring imagery of the barley standing tall amidst the breeze was meant to symbolise the resilience of Irish people amidst oppressive British rule. In 2006, the song title and its theme served as the inspiration for a powerful and heartbreaking film starring Cillian Murphy. Now, in 2021, Peter Broderick pays homage once again, weaving this motif into his latest EP, The Wind That Shakes The Bramble. Following on from his 2020 album, Blackberry, Broderick shares some additional work from the same sessions, as well as a beautiful two-part rework from Bing & Ruth (4AD) and the new 22-minute title track . . . an expansive and meditative ambient odyssey . . . a balm for the baffling chaos of the current era. Broderick’s obsession with and devotion to the Blackberry plant go well beyond his music. Last year, along with the release of the new album, he shared an eight-part video series (Blackberry Diaries) in which he demonstrated all the different uses of this incredible, ubiquitous plant . . . everything from Blackberry jam to weaving baskets and hats with the Bramble vines . . . from making tea of out the young leaves to making artwork with late-season berries past their prime. He draws attention to the fact that the Blackberry plant itself is an incredible symbol of resilience. It weaves itself all through our countrysides, playing an important role in holding the soil together, and also makes its way into our cities, proliferating even in such hyper urban environments as London. And while most modern people have lost the ability to identify the wild plants growing around us, the Blackberry remains a commonly foraged plant all around the globe. It’s as if the more domesticated we become and the more our technology separates us from the natural.

DAMON & NAOMI WITH KURIHARA - 'A SKY RECORD COMPANION'

Details

“Every audio format has its strengths and weaknesses… but those without liner notes are really missing out. “We thought we’d take advantage of the persistence of physical media for words and images and print a booklet to accompany what will be, inevitably, a digital album for many. Richard Youngs was with us when this project began, like a screwball comedy, with a (largely harmless) fall down stairs. Michio Kurihara lent his wonderful electric guitar to all its tracks, and Soichiro Nakamura skillfully recorded those parts at his Peace Music studio in Tokyo. Susanne Sasic joined us on the trip to Japan that made those recordings possible, a tour sparked by an unusual invitation in 2019 to play a cultural festival in the small port town of Tsuruga, on the Sea of Japan. (The same port where Damon’s father landed as a nine-year-old refugee from Europe in 1940.) We asked the music writer Lindsay Zoladz to tell the story of what happened next, to this project and to all of us, in the unexpected events of 2020. And Jarvis Cocker explains an audio ritual that helped us through that year. We’ve added some short notes of our own, on the genesis of the music and words for these songs; and their lyrics. Thank you for listening, however you choose to do so. And welcome to our Sky Record.” —Damon & Naomi
