4 Hands, an intimate and surreal musical conversation on the piano from German sound pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius and American composer Tim Story, is an example of all the warm yet otherworldly beauty that can come from approaching a shared love for a singular instrument from overlapping directions. Recorded sequentially but on one and the same grand piano, Roedelius laid down a few impromptu piano études in May 2019 whilst visiting his transatlantic friend Story. Tim then learned all their intricate phrasings to add his own parts in the following months. "Together we shaped the basic compositions, sometimes carefully preparing the piano with various materials (including my own hands), and Achim’s performances were committed to tape. I continued to compose and refine my parts in the following months. Because it was all recorded on the same piano, the result has a very appealing consistency of sound, and hopefully blurs our individual contributions into a single integrated voice,” Story explains. 4 Hands encapsulates rippling minimalistic patterns and delicate, ghostly interactions with surprising harmonic twists. Roedelius’ intuitive and instinctive approach based in improvisation, paired hand in hand with Story’s deliberate distilling of ideas over time, creates two sides of an engaging and thought provoking conversation that seems to evolve and deepen with each successive listen. "4 Hands is not just a new album — the logical continuation of the long-standing friendship between two composers. It’s our tribute to awareness and listening, coaxing a new sound language from the endless possibilities of a single piano played by our four hands. For me, these pieces express a different kind of beauty, they evoke more than the sum of their parts, they are a wordless dialogue, a bridge across the great water that separates our cultures from one another. Allons enfants des deux patrie, haha!” adds Roedelius.

ANDRES MIGUEL CERVANTES - 'THE CROSSING'

Details

Andrés Miguel Cervantes is releasing his debut album The Crossing on brand new label Speakeasy Studios SF, founded by musician, producer and engineer Alicia Vanden Heuvel (The Aislers Set, Still Flyin’, Magic Trick, The Ladybug Transistor, Brigid Dawson & the Mothers Network, Dirty Ghosts). Andrés Miguel Cervantes is a Mexican-American singer songwriter based in San Francisco and San Diego, California. Known to fans and fellow musicians primarily for his live performances, The Crossing marks an exciting debut for an incredibly talented singer, songwriter and finger-picking guitar player. The album was produced and recorded at Speakeasy Studios SF on Otari 8 track by Alicia Vanden Heuvel, featuring musicians: Jacob Aranda (Tarnation - pedal steel, mandolin, violin), James Kim (Fresh & Onlys, The Court & Spark - drums), Noelle Fiore (Magic Trick, Shannon Shaw Band - vocals), Anna Hillburg (Shannon Shaw Band, Magic Trick - trumpet), Ed Ivey (Rhythm Pigs - tuba), Alicia Vanden Heuvel (bass, vocals, percussion), Nick Castro (The Young Elders - lead guitar), Raphi Gottesman (The Fresh & Onlys, China - drums) and Conor Riley (Astra, Birth - piano, bass). Influenced by songwriters Leonard Cohen, Townes Van Zandt, Fred Neil, and Vicente Fernadez, Cervantes’s lyrics are distinctly his own, with beautiful, haunting images of landscapes both internal and external—stories of traveling, searching, rambling, and experiencing the impermanence of life and love. Suffused with a dreamlike, mysterious atmosphere, his complex songs are grounded in an honesty and simplicity that make them timeless and deeply relevant. The album is characterized by both a ’60s classic country and folk sound (à la Fred Neil, Lee Hazelwood, Dylan’s album Desire), and a WesternNoir sound (Mexican Ranchera and the film soundtracks of Ennio Morricone). The title track “The Crossing” is dedicated to Cervantes’s father, telling the story of his father’s border crossing and life after. This release brings a new voice to the folk / Americana / country scene from this incredibly talented Mexican-American singer-songwriter

MIRAGE - 'TELEPATHIC RADIO'

Formats
  • CFUL0207 - LP
Details

*HEAVY BLACK VINYL* Cardinal Fuzz and Centripetal Force Records are blasted to bring forth the totally wild psychedelia that is Mirage - Telepathic Radio. In a day and age when too much that is tagged as psychedelia feels more like AOR - here is some true wild abadon for your ears and mind. 44 minutes of nonstop sacred sounds painting an ancient world from the future using synthesizers, percussion, and fuzzed out wah guitars can be heard in Joe Freedman (of Banshee)‘s new psychedelic solo sonic voyage he has gathered from the furthest heights of his mind to the lowest depths of mankind and beyond. This tape echoes the kosmiche music of Cluster & Ash Ra Tempel, the beautiful synthesized landscapes of Plantasia, and the fuzzed out guitars of the 70s hippie cult underground, all while creating a new yet to be heard sound. He made these recordings on a Tascam 4-track while living in 29 palms, CA in 2020 and was informed in part by a near death experience in the grand canyon, traveling through the lesser seen parts of the desert by minibike, and building and skating a miniramp in his backyard during the recording process. When I asked him if I could release it he said, "it's all crap." But crap makes the flowers grow. All music written, performed, and recorded on tape in the California desert by Cozmik All artwork by Cozmik

ASTEROID NO.4 - 'NORTHERN SONGS'

Formats
  • CFUL0168 - LP (COLOURED)
Details

Cardinal Fuzz and Little Cloud Records are delighted to bring to you 'Northern Songs'. Hyperbole is never our thing but we need to shout it loud that this latest Asteroid No.4 LP is chock full of irresistible hooks and trippy shimmering jangles that will not be able to shake (and why would you want to) - Astereoid No.4 have created a neo psych masterpiece (we shit you not) perfect for strolling and losing yourself to in the late Summer Sun (anytime / season will work). 'Northern Songs' is the band's tenth full length record, following up the 'Collide' LP in 2018. Here, the 12-string folk-rock jangle of the mid-60's Byrds is overlaid with the washed-out vocal harmonies of Ride and topped off with psychedelic drones familiar to Spacemen 3. This is a hypnotic hybrid of several different genres filtered through the kaleidoscope of all things psychedelic. On this new album, they did all writing, playing, recording, mixing and mastering in their own studio. This is the first time they've gone fully DIY since their fourth album 'An Amazing Dream' (2006), where the band finally found their own trademark sound. "This is a first for us as we've always had at least guest musicians or someone else mix or master. It was an experiment on what we could do ourselves and testing our new studio in San Rafael, CA for the first time. Our sound is primarily rooted in the British indie music from the 80s and 90s. This is the music we grew up on, we still listen to today, and what happens as a natural result of our songwriting," says Scott Vitt. "Lyrically there's reference to what is happening both socially and politically in the world around us. We wanted to make an album that brought an air of calm or even nostalgia, to remind people that there was a time, not all that long ago, when things seemed way more normal compared to what we're experiencing today." Considered stalwarts of the modern 'psych' genre, they are known for their prolific discography of reverb-drenched recordings and liquid-projected live performances. With a sound all their own and neo-psychedelic / shoegaze learnings, they are often compared to acts like Spacemen 3 and Paisley Underground kingpins The Rain Parade. A dynamic live act, The Asteroid No.4 integrate multi-textured guitars and reverb-drenched vocal harmonies over an unwavering rhythm section. Their prolific output has earned them a dedicated fan base within the flourishing underground psychedelic scene, with over a dozen compilation appearances, digital-only rarity releases, and multiple singles and EPs. Named after Vesta, the brightest asteroid in our solar system, their moniker is an obvious nod to Spacemen 3, one of the band's main influences. In fact, one of the group’s earliest recordings was a faithful cover of their 'Losing Touch with My Mind'. Released via UK label Rocket Girl’s tribute compilation to the 80’s legends, Pete 'Sonic Boom' Kember himself named the song as a stand-out track in an interview with Magnet Magazine.

MAGIC SHOPPE - 'MONO LAKE'

Formats
  • CFUL0223 - LP (COLOURED)
Details

**Translucent Orange w/ Red Smoke** Magic Shoppe are known for delighting in distortion and reverb. Taking notes from My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Spacemen 3, Sonic Youth & Loop they have a European Psych Shoegaze sound which flirts with Noise Rock. Warm and fuzzy tonality can washout into soundscapes or crash into a maelstrom. They balance retro and futuristic music with thumping bass and jangling rhythms mixed with dark vocal melodies. On Mono Lake the band continue this aural assault, but also revisit some of the sounds on their debut Wonderland LP

FRED LANE AND HIS HITTITE HOT SHOTS - 'CAR RADIO JEROME'

Formats
  • 174GONE - LP
    733102721275
Details

As anyone who worked in a record store from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s can relate, the two Shimmy Disc albums released by the Rev. Fred Lane were the weirdest, most bizarre, abstractly enigmatic releases any of them had ever heard. From the dadaist titles and surrealist cover artwork to the absurdly peculiar lyrics and dementedly brilliant musical bent that careened from country to jazz to Morricone-inspired Western soundtracks, From The One That Cut You and Car Radio Jerome bewitched listeners with Lane’s eccentric take on music and, by extension, life in general. Early internet chat rooms and message boards were devoted to solving the mystery. For decades, rumors swirled about them. “We would just stare at the album covers and kinda make up our own stories,” Eric Friedl of Goner Records says of the misleading recording notations, fictitious back catalogs, and vague artistic allusions that dropped mostly fake clues for Lane’s most astute fans to decipher. Then, in 2013, Lane himself surfaced at the University of Alabama for an exposition. Seven years later, Icepick To The Moon, a documentary about Lane by filmmaker Skizz Cyzyk, premiered. The film, which took more than twenty years to piece together, filled in most of the blanks that had stumped generations of fans. Learning the details of Lane’s albums doesn’t change their inscrutability. The alternate Alabama universe that Lane and his compatriots conjured up—in, of all places, the southern college football town of Tuscaloosa—is a metaphysical place as vast and imbued with meaning as Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha. As Friedl raves, “They’re still different from any other record out there.”
