SLEEP - 'VOLUME ONE'

TIMELY REPRESS NOTE NEW PRICING"Volume One is the debut album. It was the only album recorded with original guitarist Justin Marler, before he became an Orthodox monk. Volume One showcases a darker sound and stronger doom metal influence than Sleep's later work. The image featured on the cover is taken from the Salvador Dali painting "Soft Self-Portrait with Fried Bacon". Their only album as a four piece of Al Cisneros, Matt Pike, Justin Marler and Chris Haikus LP repressed for first time in many years. allmusic.com "For all their budding, precocious talent, Sleep's 1991 debut, Volume One, quickly betrays their still quite heavy debt to doom metal forefathers like Black Sabbath, Witchfinder, and Saint Vitus. Driven by Matt Pike and Justin Marler's lumbering mass of low-tuned guitar riffs, Al Cisneros' (still going as Luke here) serpentine bass and ragged screams, and drummer Chris Haikus' cyclopean kit pummeling, occasional highlights such as "The Suffering," "Nebuchadnezzar's Dream," and "The Wall of Yawn" prove less memorable than they are sensorially overwhelming. And yet, ironically, Sleep's rhythm guitars would never again be kept as under control, nor would their leads sound quite as refined as they do here (see the cleaner harmonies employed to good use on "Numb" and "Catatonic," for example). This was probably due to the onetime involvement of the significantly less stoned Marler, who would soon exchange the group for a monastery where he would study to become a monk. Fittingly enough, however, losing the versatility of a second guitarist was exactly what Sleep needed to focus their singular power into a crushing force, and the remaining trio would flourish immediately behind the sheer physicality of Pike's six-string style, as proven by 1993's superlative sophomore LP, Sleep's Holy Mountain."

*NEW LOWER PRICE FOR BOXSET*A deluxe, remastered, 20 year anniversary edition of the Heads’ third album proper, the under-rated gem in their canon that is “Under Sided”. Originally released in 2002 on the Sweet Nothing label (SNLP/CD 11), Under Sided was recorded in 2001 at WhiteHouse Studios in Weston Super Mare, with Martin Nichols engineering. The band had previously recorded tracks for Mans Ruin 10” at these studios (also famous for Ripcord, Heresy, Slowdive, Hardskin, Decadence Within, Icehouse.. amongst many others!). For the reissue, the original recordings were remastered for vinyl and CD by long time Heads Masterer (!) Shawn Joseph. The resultant 8 tracks, spread over 4 sides of vinyl are some of the best music the Heads have recorded, after a bit of a hiatus following their 2000 US tour / Peel session (included in the boxset / on the 2CD version here), the band regrouped and worked out the tracks for the album, relentless rehearsing for the recording. Very few shows happened in that 2001-2002 timeframe.. band members were busy, earning a living, getting on with life, but they still had some riffs/songs there. Upon release in 2002 the album got great reviews in the press, from Kerrang and MOJO to the Sunday Times, all helping the Bristol fourpiece confirm their cult status, which has continued to current times.. The remastered album is being reissued as a 4LP + 2CD boxset. The extra 2LP features their Peel session from 2000, as well as a couple of compilation tracks (For Mad Men Only / Born To Go), and some unreleased demo versions, as well as 2 exclusive to this set CDS that feature nearly 150 minutes of Live recordings (mastered, but RAW!) from their gigs on the Thekla in Bristol and rehearsal room tapes in 2001 and 2002. The boxset will also have a special slip-mat, stickers, and a 24 page booklet of photos /writings, including recollections by each band member, and others including Stewart Lee. Under Sided is a pounding sike-nightmare that shows the Heads at the peak of their powers, there’s a flow throughout the album of melding psychedelic noise rock to unrelentin rhythms and creating a bad trip for all listening.. open battering-ram “Dissonaut” is a staple in their live shows to this day… even the gentle sooth of “Energy” is enveloped by a white noise fury.. the intensity of some of the tracks: the terror inducing “Bedminster” or “False Heavy” (a tour worn riffmonger from 2000) or the Magnet-esque “Heavy Sea”, showed the band as ferocious as any of the insurgent “stoner” genre of that time. They were never going to make their living out of touring, record sales… as Hugo mentions in his notes for the booklet, “.. we had less boundaries and felt we could experiment more and not worry about commerciality…” but they were able to make this album.

MOTTE - 'COLD + LIQUID'

Formats
  • BING173 - LP

Details

Anita Clark’s new Motte album, Cold + Liquid, builds glacial atmospheres, frozen moods and isolated impressions. Portraying New Zealand through socio-geological sound, breathing in Christchurch cultures and locales, the album embodies an artistic simulation of the Kiwi environment. With this release, Clark aimed to make something colossal, and set about finding the right textures to add. A friend who works at Oamaru Freezing Works gave her field recordings of the temperature control room, a vast cold space of isolated machinery, where ice grows and dissolves in ever-evolving sculptures. Getting her hands on shortwave/longwave radios, she incorporated frequency sweeps. Another friend provided her with the mechanical drones underneath the deck of a cement cargo ship, as it lay docked in Lyttelton Harbor. Still more sources came from Sign of the Bellbird, an historic environmental site in South Christchurch, where Clark and Thomas Lambert recorded bellbirds, rolling boulders, snapping sticks, thrown dirt and the papery sound of the native harakeke plant. While violin dominates the first Motte album Strange Dreams (2017), Clark sought to expand instrumentation. She was gifted a handmade Pūrerehua puoro, a traditional Māori instrument that sounds similar to the whirling and hovering of a moth (which is “motte” in German). A reacquaintance to the guitar occurred after developing an alter-ego project entitled Sex Den, with sleazy noir-esque guitar riffs in response to a failed rumour from a local drug-addled dive bar. Guitar and synth allowed for a broader songwriting palette along with a sometimes Dadaist approach to lyric writing. These new tools accent the extreme ambiences of Cold + Liquid, while additional work was provided by Ben Woods on synth and bowed guitar. Listening to Cold + Liquid is a fulsome experience of articulated sound and specific place. Anita Clark dances around the shining candescence of her culture like a night insect, always seeking a better vantage point to the light.

Iconic indie folk pop duo from Galaxie 500 return with a dreamy collaboration with atmospheric Japanese guitarist Kurihara. “With its meditative tempos and enveloping guitar work by Michio Kurihara—‘it’s like this golden net,’ Naomi said of his gorgeous, versatile playing—A Sky Record offers shelter from the squall. If it has the glow of a long-delayed reunion between friends, that’s not accidental: Kurihara hasn’t traveled outside of Japan in some time, so Damon and Naomi hadn’t recorded with him in nearly ten years. When they finally made it back to Japan in November 2019 for a brief tour, they were elated to book some time with Kurihara at the aptly named studio Peace Music. “In those long stretches of quarantime, the tracks they returned from Japan with had distinct moods but not yet any lyrics. (Kurihara works best when trying to conjure a specific feeling or natural image—after all, he did once make a solo record, Sunset Notes, on which every song was based on a different sunset he’d witnessed...) How to write about the pandemic? How to not write about the pandemic? Naomi first struck upon the appropriate tone when re-reading the journals of one of her favorite abstract painters, Charles Burchfield. She arranged this found language into the lyrics of the iridescent ‘Season Without Time,’ which also became a tribute to a friend that she and Damon had lost in the last year. “From there, the floodgates opened. The wistful and watery ‘Midnight’ (electrified, towards the end, by the slow screams of a Kurihara solo) conjures Naomi’s nostalgia for youthful summers spent at Jones Beach, while the gentle current of ‘Sailing By’ pays homage to those ritualistic BBC Shipping Forecasts and the waltzing, quintessentially British theme song from which it takes its name.” —Lindsay Zoladz

FUSILIER - 'TREASON'

Formats
  • BING183 - CD
    600197018323
Details

Like any scientist would before coming to a conclusion, Fusilier’s new EP,Treason, asks only questions without ever making a statement.Treason locates its universe right after the Big Bang, where fragments join and create something entirely new. This liminal space in between is what occupies the mind of Atlanta-raised, Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist Blake Fusilier. Across the EP, Fusilier hypothesizes that the only road to true freedom of the spirit is through radicalization and reimagining. He questions the complexities of the self and the realities of race & sexuality alongside the expectations of the artist, asking: “How can I exist given that the size of my imagination of me doesn’t yet fit into the ways I am seen?” Themes of violence, youth, alienation, and belonging undergird the collection, while its songs serve as individual love letters to the artists he’s most inspired by, like Nine Inch Nails, Bill Withers, and Fela Kuti. It fits in today somewhere between TV On The Radio, Mitski, and Radiohead with its precise yet opaque lyrics, indie-rock guitar riffs, classical motifs and sometimes-soaring, sometimes-crooning melodies. Treason aims to pull you into its gravitation with “Peace,” an orchestra of droning synths punctuated by lyrics that embody the Fusilier ethos: “My gift to the world is to die in a whirlwind.” Lead single “No Words” builds on mantras over percussive clicks and clacks, towards a cathartic end. The song, which twists and shifts like a snake slowly shedding its skin, is a perfect introduction to Fusilier’s sound and to - in his own words - “letting go of the thought that I’m not the main character in my own story.” Later, EP standout “Lost” builds its merits on a gentle groove, dissonant guitars, and a powerful whisper, then reaches an explosion of self-assurance. “I’m in love with the whole of life,” he sings, presiding over an anxious cacophony. The moments are many when Fusilier accepts the irrational and addresses the psychological divisions that exist in a society that impresses self-doubt. Blake says, “Treason is a sort of purgatory that I wander through, wondering if I belong to the ideal or to the monstrous. It’s a search for a home.” For Fusilier, the destruction of the theoretical self - or the imagined self - yields profound opportunities for scientific exploration and self-actualization. Yet, by the time Treason comes to its close, Blake begins to accept his interior dialogue’s harsh words. On EP closer “KTA,” against the backdrop of a mind folding in on itself, Blake asks himself quite simply: “Do you really want a new enemy?” These final moments succumb to a minimalist and melodic frenzy, all to introduce us to its own cycle of self-discovery. Throughout, Treason revolves and revolts, constantly questioning in hopes that an answer appears in the whirlwind.

R.L. BOYCE has been wanting to make this record for decades. He has backed the greatest hill country legends, from Jesse Mae Hemphill to Otha Turner. He has played in and around Mississippi since he was a child. But this master at blues improvisation has never been put onto tape effectively until now. On one hot and steamy Mississippi weekend, R.L. gathered his friends and played his heart out, the first day right on his porch, with the whole neighborhood gathering around, the second in Jim Dickinson's legendary Zebra Ranch studio. The cast of characters on this record is just mind-blowing LUTHER DICKINSON, CALIVN JACKSON, CEDRIC BURNSIDE, ANDRE EVANS, and LIGHTNIN’ MALCOLM.

PEG LEG HOWELL - 'LEGENDARY PEG LEG HOWELL'

Formats
  • SPK1023 - LP
    824247023116
Details

PEG LEG HOWELL was a forgotten, impoverished blues artist when musicologist George Mitchell recorded him at age 75 in 1963. It is these recordings that make up The Legendary Peg Leg Howell record originally on Testament. But Peg Leg was actually part of the original wave of blues recording artists, recording for Columbia in 1926. His story is like many: when success proved illusive, he turned his back on music and settled for bootlegging and other types of work until rediscovered in the ‘60s. By then, he was old and fragile—qualities that translate beautifully on this quiet, haunting record that would be the bookend to a recording output that was tragically small but truly rich. The Legendary Peg Leg Howell is a sonic novel, filled with storytelling, drama, history and sadness.

Live at the Bootleggers captures a moment in time, and a place in history when community was created around the buying and drinking of illegal liquor…moonshine…white lightening. It was recorded live at a bootlegger’s homebase in Fayette County, Tennessee in 1971 at the behest of LATTIE MURRELL, whom BENGT OLSSON and BILL BARTH had tracked down to document. Besides Murrell, Barth and WILLIAM FLOYD DAVIS, the contributors to this record just happened to be spellin’ with the same bootlegger that evening; they are unknown voices, arising with glory from the soak of moonshine, and then fading back into obscurity.

DICKON HINCHLIFFE - 'LEAVE NO TRACE OST'

Formats
  • SPK1044 - LP

Details

**ON FOREST GREEN VINYL** "First time ever on vinyl, the soundtrack to the 2018 film Leave No Trace by ex-Tindersticks Dickon Hinchliffe is a beautiful, somber soundscape that finds the composer matching the sparse, meditative story arc of the film with long, stringed pieces and spacey reverberations. Hinchliffe, who had formerly worked with the film’s director Debra Granik on her landmark film Winter’s Bone in 2010, continues an incredible partnership with a score that stands alone as an artistic achievement while supporting a story of a father and daughter attempting to live off the grid among trees and ferns. The dark green and brown colors that accent their habitat are painted by Hinchliffe through his music, with his compositions breathing from the bark and leaves and dew. Designed by veteran Barbara Bersche, the record comes in a full bleed redwood grove cover and forest green vinyl, further highlighting the rich sound, perfect for the warm grooves. Pressed on green vinyl. The mediations presented by Dickon Hinchliffe on the Leave No Trace soundtrack…fragile, hallucinatory…are a thing to behold."
