NAUJAWANANA BAIDER - 'VOLUME 1 & 2'

Formats
  • CFUL162 - LP
Details

*REPRESS ONLY A HANDFUL OF COPIES BE QUICK!!*Cardinal Fuzz and Feeding Tube records are proud to bring to you, Naujawanana Baider - Volume 1 & 2 on double heavy black vinyl. Naujawanan Baidar (Farsi for Enlightened Youth) is the project of artist and musician N.R. Safi (The Myrrors) With roots in the now-endangered sounds of 1960s-80s Afghan cassette culture, Naujawanan Baidar filters the traditional music of Safi's paternal heritage through a labyrinth of buzzing drones, tape manipulation, and fuzz-drenched percussion, warping both traditional and popular forms into a tangled mass of tape-saturated noise inspired by the very medium that once carried them. Traditional folk instruments (both acoustic and home-amplified) like the rubab, armonia, sorna, and tabla, twist and melt into blown-out electrical storms, proving that one does not necessarily need guitars or any other standard western instrumentation to channel the trance-like energy of rock and roll. Although the end results may sound far removed from the original artists that helped inspired them (legendary performers like Ahmad Zahir, Beltoon and Hamidullah, or Salma Jahani) there is something to be said for this "new" or "imagined" form of contemporary Afghan experimental music. Had the dusty backstreets of pre-war Kabul birthed an experimental music scene paralleling German's krautrock movement, one can imagine that the results might have sounded a little something like this. These tracks were cut over the course of 2017 to 2019 as a sort of sonic notebook, documenting the evolution of the project as it first took shape. Though the majority were originally conceived of as nothing more than demos or impressionistic sketches, the spontaneous and ramshackle approach of the tapes was eventually deemed more than befitting the spirit of the project . Naujawanan Baidar both reaffirms its ties to a relatively hidden (to outside eyes at least) cultural history while at the same time pushing outwards into new and unexplored territories. Originally released via Radio Khiyaban on cassette (the packaging and artwork on both cassette releases was a direct homage to 1970s Afghan tape design)

"Put a dervish brotherhood from the Hindu Kush in a room with Afghan Folk instruments, multiple tape recorders and a box of psych records from the 60s and 70s and imagine what would come out. That is the sound of Naujawanan Baidar. "The album is a sonic whirlwind; you feel you are between worlds, between tape players, turning in a trance of distorted melodies and ricocheting rhythms." - Scene Noise

AKUSMI - 'FLEETING FUTURE'

Formats
  • TU001LP - LP

Details

300 copies on Black Vinyl   Reverse board sleeve  Obi strip  Akusmi is the new project moniker of French-born, London based composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Pascal Bideau, who signs to the new Tonal Union imprint for the release of his album ‘Fleeting Future.’ With its hallucinatory, genre-defying blend of minimalism, cosmic jazz and Fourth World influences, and in its quest for optimism in the face of unknown and limitless possibility. ‘Fleeting Future’ stands apart as an inventive and inspirational debut. The creation of the album’s richly colourful and multi-layered sound world was originally inspired by Bideau’s journey to Indonesia, where he immersed himself in traditional Gamelan and gong music. Many of the themes, motifs and melodies on ‘Fleeting Future’ seed from the ‘Slendro’ scale, one of the essential tuning systems used in Gamelan. However it is not musical scales, but scales as in the size or extent of things that most fascinates Bideau, specifically he explains; “the compelling way things dramatically change when you shift from any given scale to another.” The album connects directly to nature and the wider world in its evocation of perceptive shifts and transitions from microscopic to macro scale, as evidenced by the opening title track ‘Fleeting Future’, on which a simple dotted saxophone line morphs and billows into synths, brass and strings, indicating the musical voyage that lies ahead. Like the start of a journey or adventure it is full of anticipation, its arborescent growth conveying the optimism of the unknown and of limitless possibility. The album centrepiece ‘Neo Tokyo’ is a vibrating, ebullient mass of colliding elements which feels like zooming in to the electron level, as it teeters on the edge of chaos. The title is a reference to Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira, a dizzying work of art set in a sprawling futuristic metropolis.

“Twin giant towers of amps grinding out minimal beat bloop, the transient sound molecules smell of burning gear and the floor of the pit—this is organic, electronic music at its finest. Dance? Why not. Freak out? For sure. Brothers from a different mother (Bjorn Copeland and Aaron Warren) à la two-thirds of Black Dice have come together with this fantastic debut [Flaccid Mojo] for us. These are mean beat vipers, spitting and tumescent on the abattoir floor.“I would call it drug music, but I’m not sure what drugs these humans consume. Stem cell and adrenal gland cocktails I’m guessing. Futuristic and primal it is, beats from the Thunder-Dome, fight music for fuckers. I’ve seen them on two separate occasions blow the power for an entire building. Baller move, boys. Produced perfectly by Chris Coady (look him up to be impressed). This record is a burning car in a field and I love it.“For fans of Black Dice, Container, Whitehouse, Negativland, Ralph Records, minimal beats à la Profan, vintage Japanese noise, Severed Heads, windburn and chapped lips.” —John Dwyer

R.M.F.C. - 'ACCESS'

Formats
  • ANT081 - 7"
Details

R.M.F.C. returns in 2022 with a brand new single from the much-anticipated, forthcoming LP, due early 2023. “Access” is a short, sharp, straight to the point piece that combines an anarcho marching beat and Devo-style guitar riff that leads into the driving rhythm section R.M.F.C. is known and loved for. With the permanent addition of 12-string guitar to the band; it’s fuller, thicker and janglier than ever before, but still retains the R.M.F.C. sound. Formerly based in Ulladulla, and now relocated to Sydney, R.M.F.C. is the baby of 21 year-old Buz Clatworthy, who writes and performs all the groups recorded output himself from his home studio (still based in Ulladulla). Following up in the footsteps of 2020’s “Reader” 7”, R.M.F.C.’s sound has grown as quickly as Buz has. Giant strides forward since the first cassette, “Hive”, was released in 2018 - and “Access” is only further proof of this. On the flip side we have a phenomenal cover originally by The Lillettes, a UK based post punk band that wrote this great tune “Air Conditioning” in 1981. These two ripping tracks complete the brand new R.M.F.C. 7”. - stay tuned for the LP early next year!

THE PRIZE - 'WRONG SIDE OF TOWN'

Formats
  • ANT083 - 7"
Details

**ON WHITE VINYL** The Prize are Melbourne’s hottest new addition, a breath of fresh air and a shot in the arm for a city still bouncing back from a bitter start to the decade. Forming in early 2021 and figuring out a way to jam and write songs in between rules and restrictions, The Prize landed on a blend of power pop and rock and roll that's equal parts brains and bravado. The joyous new five-piece bring three guitars and five voices that harmonise together to make some of the best power pop this city has heard in years. With lead vocals primarily shared between drummer Nadine Muller and guitarist Carey Paterson, the five-piece is rounded out with Joseph Imfeld on guitar, Austin Haire on guitar and Jack Kong on bass. After the dust settled from the city’s miserable hiatus, The Prize played their first show to a sold out Croxton Bandroom opening for Civic in November 2021. Their sound blends the hooks of The Nerves, twin rock ’n’ roll leads of Thin Lizzy and minor progressions of later era Flamin’ Groovies with the fullness and power of the Ramones and the dynamic punch of Face To Face eraAngels and early Divinyls. Obvious influences shine through on their sensational cover of the obscure 1979 power pop classic, “Fighting My Way Back”; originally by British group, The Incredible Kidda Band.

THE FROWNING CLOUDS - 'GOSPEL SOUNDS AND MORE FROM THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY'

Formats
  • ANT078 - LP
Details

FORTE is getting 50 copies on black vinyl: It’s with great excitement and much nostalgia, that today we have the pleasure of announcing a full length record’s worth of (circa. 2012) material from the real unsung heroes of the Geelong music scene; The Frowning Clouds. The band who started it all for what we refer to as the thriving music scene that currently remains in Geelong. Anti Fade for one, would not exist without The Frowning Clouds; the biggest musical influence a pimply teen growing up in Geelong could ever ask for. The band started out as pimply teens themselves in 2006, and by 2008, as 17 year old kids they were invited to play the iconic Golden Plains festival, and played shows around Melbourne and surrounds on a weekly basis for years onward. For a moment they seemed to like they were the next big thing, but for reasons beyond me, their 60’s garage inspired brand of music was largely under-appreciated and they never really got the respect or attention they deserved. A much more appreciated band these days than they ever were during their existence. You could say they were ten years ahead of their time, perhaps? To summarise the background of Gospel Sounds & More from the Church of Scientology; a large chunk of it could be looked at as the Clouds’ second album that never came out. After releasing their first record in 2010, they worked up a new set of songs, all much more original and “their own sound” compared to their first album, but by the time they got into the studio to record with Tim Dunn, they had over 20 tracks. So obviously a lot of them (predominantly the older tracks) didn’t make the sophomore classic, “Whereabouts” LP, and instead came out as a European tour cassette that quickly sold through it’s hundred copies and the songs sat idle on Bandcamp from then onwards. We were able to compile a lot of stuff from the time, including the above tour tape, two tracks that never actually came out plus a handful of singles that weren’t included on the albums. Owen Penglis who recorded their All Night Long single in 2011 was even able to dig up his original tapes to remix the three tracks from this session. It’s ten years or more since all of these songs were recorded, yet they still feel as fresh and relative as anything else that’s coming out today.

KRAUS - 'FIRE! WATER! AIR! KRAUS!'

Details

Longtime Aotearoa / New Zealand producer Kraus has been a fixture in various underground North and South Island circles for twenty years, and his solo music has covered a lot of ground in that time. In recent years he’s shifted focus from guitar-based recordings to synthesis-oriented electronic work, an approach that blooms in full color on Fire! Water! Air! Kraus!, his 19th full-length album and first all-electronic affair. Kraus obsessives will once more revel in the inventive use of melody and texture here, as well as the primitive futurist fusion of eastern / western psychedelia and tonal explorations of electronic pioneers like Suzanne Ciani and Laurie Spiegel, with a dash of exotica for good measure. Fire! Water! Air! Kraus! is a joyful, immersive listen, and Soft Abuse is thrilled to share it with the known universe.

ZONG - 'ASTRAL LORE'

Formats
  • CFUL-0220 - LP
Details

Hailing from Brisbane Australia, Zong are a three-piece instrumental group focused on improvised cosmic jams with emphasized themes of psychedelic states, tribal rituals, gothic horror, alien encounters and medieval fantasy. Tying this all together is the groups explosive, intense and emotional delivery sounding out in the rich, golden, down-tuned and cranked amplifier glory akin to Black Sabbath and Sleep, combined with lounge able neo-psych and stoner melodies and the far out hurtling through space sounds of 70’s Kraut legends Hawkwind and Amon Duul II. Their true uniqueness, however, lies in their ability to blend genres and sonically improvise together making them a most-satisfying heavy tripped-out listen, and a spectacle to behold as a live performance. Zong’s second LP Astral Lore is an exploration of the subconscious experience on the astral plane, overlaid upon the consciousness of space. An oxygenated drift through voids, inhabited landscapes on superimposed worlds and primordial Lovecraftian echoes.

MOSTAFA HEYDARIAN - 'SONGS OF HORAMAN'

Formats
  • CFUL-0242 - LP
Details

Cardinal Fuzz & Radio Khiyaban are excited to announce the vinyl edition of Mohammad Mostafa Heydarian's 'Songs of Horaman'. Previously available digitally, as well as a limited run on cassette, this edition of the album is being presented in a 500 copy vinyl pressing and made available for preorder on September 16. Its release date is October 7. Mohammad Mostafa Heydarian is a young Kurdish tanbur player from Kermanshah, a city in the mountainous western Iranian region of Horaman. The son of a local instrument builder, he grew up surrounded by the local traditional music styles, studying with a number of well-known master musicians before recently entering university to study Persian classical music. Heydarian currently resides in Tehran and has deep affection for the land of his upbringing. Whenever he is feeling down, he thinks about Horaman and the role his home has played in making him who he is today. For Heydarian, it seemed only appropriate to title his album accordingly. Recorded in the city of Karaj with the percussive assistance of family friend and long-time collaborator Behzad Varesteh, Heydarian's debut includes a mixture of traditional tasnifs and maqams - thrilling and gorgeous tanbur pieces centered in the two musicians' talent for extended improvisation and feeling. 'Songs of Horaman' was initially released on cassette by the European label Radio Khiyaban in November of 2021. It was immediately met with praise and positive energy, and it became clear that Heydarian’s music deserved to reach more ears. Plans to broadly distribute the album on the vinyl format came together quickly with Cardinal Fuzz (UK) joining the project. In an era of production delays, supply chain shortages, increased shipping fees, heavy taxation, and other complications, these four labels hope this effort serves as a model for how DIY culture can continue to grow and thrive in cooperative ways. And they are all certainly grateful to be part of what Heydarian has to offer. A special note of recognition and appreciation also goes out to musician and producer Valentin Portron, a friend of Heydarian who helped facilitate and coordinate this release- and who also mixed the results you hear on the album. Mastering - Chris Hardman. Artwork - Nik Rayne
