This 19 track release engenders a previously unreleased live concert recorded at Paddington Town Hall (Sydney Australia) in December 1977 onto 16 track tape just prior to the band's departure for the UK to promote the Sire release of their Radios Appear album. The result is a totally wild and raw release that captures the band?s true primal energy perhaps in a way that other recordings haven't. The songs represent a wide selection of their originals along with covers of Blue Oyster Cult, MC5 and Bo Diddley.

At the late show, Robert Hunter sat in with the band on “Tiger Rose” and “Promontory Rider”. Highlights including a take on the Jimmie Rodgers penned rave-up, "That's All Right," an early show encore of "Deal" and a rollicking version of "That's What Love Will Make You Do" show Jerry and the band loose and fluid at the end of the storied tour which also yielded the out-of-print After Midnight: Kean College, 2/28/80 released in 2004.

GarciaLive Volume Four: March 22nd, 1978 Veteran's Hall highlights an oft-requested Jerry Garcia Band line-up featuring Jerry, John Kahn, Buzz Buchanan, Maria Muldaur and Keith & Donna Godchaux. Falling just days after the conclusion of the Garcia band's tour and days before the release of Cats Under The Stars, this intimate performance in Sebastopol, CA showcases a particularly relaxed, vibrant and soulful Garcia Band evident on moving versions of "Mission in the Rain," "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," and the gospel standard "I'll Be With Thee." Rocking takes on "Mystery Train," "I Second That Emotion" and "Midnight Moonlight" bring the surging tempos that offer beautiful balance to the performance and showcase the band's tremendous musical range. The performance also marks the first guest appearance from future Jerry Garcia Band keyboardist Ozzie Ahlers. GarciaLive Volume Five: December 31st, 1975 Keystone Berkeley celebrates the Jerry Garcia Band's three set performance at the storied Keystone Berkeley. While Garcia celebrated many new years on stage with the Grateful Dead, this performance holds the distinction as the Jerry Garcia Band's lone New Year's Eve appearance. Fresh off a Winter tour which yielded the transcendent performances captured on 2009's Let It Rock live release, Garcia is joined for this performance by mainstay John Kahn on bass, Sly and the Family Stone drummer Greg Errico and legendary rock pianist Nicky Hopkins. Hopkins' accolades are almost too numerous to list, but include a seemingly endless list of collaborations with The Beatles, The Who, and the Rolling Stones, among many others. And what New Year's Eve celebration would be complete without a few friends? Grateful Dead bandmates Bob Weir and Mickey Hart along with Kingfish's Matthew Kelly join the fold for a vibrant evening of music.

Details

Volume Six showcases Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders’ July 5th, 1973 performance at the Lion’s Share in San Anselmo, CA. Recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson just five days prior to the seminal performances celebrated on the Live at the Keystone series, GarciaLive Volume Six highlights a particularly adventurous evening at the Lion’s Share, a 200 capacity club known for its vibrant music scene which drew regulars like Janis Joplin, Phil Lesh, Van Morrison, and many others. The club’s intimacy can be felt throughout the recordings as the band, rounded out by John Kahn on bass and drummer Bill Vitt, frequently launch into extended improvisations fueled by the exchange of energy with the audience. The blistering “She’s Got Charisma” -> “That’s Alright, Mama”, which clocks in at over 31 minutes long, “starts off innocently in familiar blues territory, but very quickly deconstructs into fragmentation and exploration, defying both gravity and expectation at the same time” as writer Benjy Eisen eloquently describes in the releases’ liner note essay. The presence of Mike Price on trumpet during the band’s second set adds to the freedom and looseness found within the performance. Price is felt most during extended takes on “My Funny Valentine” and “Merl’s Tune,” both easy highlights of the entire evening.

JERRY GARCIA BAND - 'GARCIALIVE VOLUME 7: NOVEMBER 8TH 1976 SOPHIE'S PALO ALTO'

GarciaLive Volume Seven showcases the Jerry Garcia Band's November 8th, 1976 performance at Sophie’s in Palo Alto, California. The long-lost original master reels, recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson, were recently re-discovered along with a trove of other reels dubbed the “Houseboat Tapes” and have been remastered for this release. It was the year of this recording that Donna Jean and Keith Godchaux first joined up with the Jerry Garcia Band. Their addition, along with Ron Tutt on drums and bassist John Kahn, helped form what would be one of the most durable lineups of the Garcia Band. Earlier that year Garcia commented, "I haven’t been as happy with any little performing group since Old & In The Way in terms of feeling ‘this is really harmonious, this is what I want to hear.'" That harmonious vibe is especially present as well. Throughout the course of the evening, the band deftly melds gospel, rock, soul, and reggae to form their quintessential mid-70’s sound. As one astute critic pointed out, “More than any other Garcia band this one allows him room to run through all his guitar styles, often within a single song.” From the opening notes of “The Way You Do The Things You Do”, the band lock into a relaxed, but confident groove with Kahn & Tutt’s deep pocket providing the foundation for Jerry & Keith’s melodic exploration rounded out by Donna Jean’s soulful harmonies. The Hunter/Garcia penned “Mission in the Rain” and Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” are particularly poignant and soulful while songs like “Midnight Moonlight”, “Tore Up Over You” and “Ride Mighty High” provide the sparks bringing balance to the evening. A 22+ minute “Don’t Let Go” stands out not only for its length, but for its exercise in dynamics which further showcases Garcia’s comfort not only with the band, but the freedom found in playing smaller rooms tailor-made for they type of music he was looking to create.

HART VALLEY DRIFTERS - 'FOLK TIME'

Formats
  • JGFRR1011 - CD
    880882276126
Details

Folk Time showcases Garcia’s folk & bluegrass quartet, the Hart Valley Drifters and holds historical significance as Garcia’s first known studio recording. The Hart Valley Drifters was one of Garcia’s early ensembles put together during the folk revival of the early 1960s, but it was perhaps his first band to present a professional level of musicianship and vocal harmony. The group featured a 20-year old Jerry Garcia on lead vocals, banjo and guitar, Robert Hunter on bass, David Nelson on guitar, Ken Frankel on banjo, fiddle and guitar and Norm Van Maastricht on dobro. On Folk Time, Garcia can be heard flexing his vocal muscles throughout, taking the lead on every track. He stands out on the Stanley Brothers’ “Roving Gambler” and “Think of What You’ve Done,” and on “Sugar Baby,” he channels the haunting original Dock Boggs’ vocal while covering the Folkways version by Doc Watson and Clarence Ashley. One of Jerry’s early bluegrass guitar heroes, Carter Stanley, supplies the influence for his guitar The collection winds up with a stunning performance of Doc Watson’s take on the Mississippi Sheiks’ “Sitting On Top of The World” It’s a simple version consisting only of Frankel’s guitar and Garcia’s voice that leaves the hairs standing on the back of your neck. It’s a departure from the recording that ended up on their debut album, but the roots of the Grateful Dead are clearly marked. (The performance heard on Folk Time is also featured on Before the Dead.)

JERRY GARCIA BAND - 'GARCIALIVE VOLUME 8: NOVEMBER 23RD 1991 BRADLEY CENTER'

Formats
  • JGFRR1014 - 2xCDs

Details

The eighth installment in the GarciaLive series presents the Jerry Garcia Band's November 23rd, 1991 performance at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI. The Fall ’91 tour as a whole is widely regarded as one of Garcia’s finest and this particular Saturday evening serves as a further testament to the legend. Fans in attendance at the Bradley Center braved an intense snowstorm and the audience's palpable energy and enthusiasm was a likely catalyst for this spirited performance. Keyboardist Melvin Seals summarized the group nicely stating "That was the magic band. It’s not that the other scenarios didn’t work out but once we got to that level of the band with (drummer) Dave Kemper, John Kahn, Jerry, myself and the singers, Jackie (LaBranch) and Gloria (Jones) we all knew we had something special. That was the band.” And magic they made! As Dean Budnick notes in the release’s liner note essay, "If at times the Grateful Dead could be something of a turgid Russian novel: convoluted and labyrinthine yet mostly rewarding, the Jerry Garcia Band during this era was more of an Elizabethan sonnet: breezy, emotive and luminous.” The tone is set immediately with a melodious “Cats Under The Stars” opening the evening to the sheer delight of the crowd. Playful and buoyant versions of “Lay Down Sally”, “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox”, and “Deal”, along with an incendiary “Tangled Up In Blue” build into peak after peak. The marvelous evening is balanced by soul-soaked performances of “That Lucky Old Sun”, “My Sisters and Brothers” and a positively show-stopping take on The Manhattan’s “Shining Star” which showcases Jerry and the girls singing in beautiful harmony. As the Garcia Band graduated into arenas it could be expected that some of the intimacy might be lost, but on this cold, snowy evening in Milwaukee, they managed to make the Bradley Center feel cozy and warm.

GarciaLive Volume Nine presents Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders’ August 11th, 1974 performance at Keystone in Berkeley, CA. Joining Garcia & Saunders this evening were John Kahn on bass, Martin Fierro on saxophone & flute and the Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann on drums. As the site of over 200 performances by Garcia in various configurations, the Keystone Berkeley stage likely felt more like an extension of the Saunders’ family garage where the group would often practice. It was a space without pressure or pretense — one in which they could freely experiment with arrangements, new repertoire and, most of all, just jam. Saunders’ influence on Garcia’s musical development is plainly heard on GarciaLive Volume Nine. As Garcia once noted in an interview, "[Saunders] filled me in on all those years of things I didn’t do. I’d never played any standards; I’d never played in dance bands. I never had any approach to the world of regular, straight music. He knew all the standards, and he taught me how bebop works. He taught me music.” While the evening’s setlist focuses primarily on standards, the approach is anything but regular or straight. A free-spirited version of The Four Tops’s R&B classic “Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I’ve Got)”, one of the evening’s easy highlights, showcases Garcia & Saunders' ability to reimagine standards through inventive arrangements and fiery virtuosity permeated with soul. Other standouts from this performance include a surging “(I’m A) Roadrunner” and an extended take on Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come” which clocks in at nearly 20 minutes.

Before The Dead brings together a rare collection of the earliest known performances by Jerry Garcia. From an informal and intimate 1961 performance of simple folk songs at a birthday party with future songwriting partner Robert Hunter to more polished coffeehouse gigs with old-timey and bluegrass bands through 1964, this collection showcases Garcia’s deep study of the folk music tradition and its influence on his musical journey leading to the formation of the Grateful Dead. Even with his entire musical career in front of him, Garcia’s magnetic presence as a performer can be plainly heard in these first steps. • Four CDs containing over 3.5 hours of studio & live performances culled from previously uncirculated masters and newly discovered recordings. Audio restoration and mastering by Fred Kevorkian. • Produced by Grateful Dead publicist and biographer Dennis McNally and Brian Miksis. • Includes a 32 page book with rare photos, memorabilia and in-depth liner note essays by McNally, Miksis, acclaimed bluegrass scholar Neil V. GarciaLive Volume Ten documents the Jerry Garcia Band’s May 20th, 1990 performance at the Hilo Civic Auditorium in Hawaii. In this relaxed setting complete with leis on stage, it’s no wonder that the music from this show shines so brightly – both in Garcia’s strong vocals and guitar playing but also the joie de vivre setlist spanning some of Jerry’s favorite corners of popular music – Dylan, Motown, Reggae, and Rock & Roll. Spurred on by the ever steady rhythm section of Dave Kemper and John Kahn, the Garcia Band this night seemed to pull out all the stops complete with the celestial sounds of Melvin Seals’ organ and the background vocals of Gloria Jones and Jacklyn LaBranch. The sum of these parts that defined the 1990s Garcia Band sound would make for a magical Sunday night that first kicked off with the Holland-Dozier-Holland favorite "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" followed by an idyllic “They Love Each Other.” Sprinkled in throughout the night are five Dylan covers including powerfully delivered vocals on versions of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” “Forever Young" and a positively soaring “Tangled Up In Blue” as the encore. Along the way, covers like “Stop That Train,” “Waiting For A Miracle” and "Evangeline" ably accent originals like “Deal” and “Run For The Roses.”

Details

Electric on the Eel celebrates the Jerry Garcia Band’s 3 beloved, biannual performances at French’s Camp on the Eel River in Piercy, CA: August 29, 1987; June 10, 1989; and August 10, 1991. The events were co-presented by Bill Graham Productions and the Hog Farm which, as producer & Hog Farmer Bob Barsotti describes "lent them an air of familiarity not always present in the urban settings in which Jerry usually played.” The audience and band both delighted in the free spirited and fun-filled atmosphere, setting the stage for 6 magical sets of music featuring the quintessential JGB line-up: Garcia, John Kahn (bass), Melvin Seals (organ), David Kemper (drums), Gloria Jones (vocals) and Jacklyn LaBranch (vocals). The collection features several unreleased rarities including the seldom performed “See What Love Can Do”, “Twilight”, “Lazy Bones”, and “I Hope It Won’t Be This Way Always.” Other rarities from the release include “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love”, “Struggling Man”, “Lay Down Sally” and “You Never Can Tell [C’est La Vie]”.

GarciaLive Volume 11 documents the Jerry Garcia Band’s November 11th, 1993 show in Providence, Rhode Island on what would be the band's final East Coast tour. On this evening, in front of 8,500 fans, the band showcased their luscious group harmonies within an incredible variety of song choices – Garcia/Hunter originals, R&B, the requisite Bob Dylan cover, and even a little bluegrass. In company with Jerry, John Kahn and David Kemper drove their imaginative rhythms alongside Melvin Seals’ soulful melodies, and the symphonic background vocals of Gloria Jones and Jacklyn LaBranch. Produced from previously uncirculated soundboard recordings, it’s a slice of prime, late-era Garcia that hasn’t sounded this good since the notes filled the halls of the Providence Civic Center.

JERRY GARCIA AND MERL SAUNDERS - 'GARCIALIVE VOLUME 12: JANUARY 23RD 1973 THE BOARDING HOUSE'

GarciaLive Volume 12: January 23rd, 1973 The Boarding House presents Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders’ complete and previously uncirculated performance at the storied downtown San Francisco venue. Mixed by Jonathan Wilson and Dave Cerminara from the original 16-track recordings captured by Betty Cantor and Rex Jackson. Captured nearly two years after debuting their amorphous combo, GarciaLive Volume 12 finds Garcia and Saunders continuing to stretch the bounds of R&B standards and foundational rock & roll on the front-end of a three-night midweek run. The core of Garcia, Saunders, bassist John Kahn and drummer Bill Vitt are joined here by vocalist Sarah Fulcher whose tenure with the group was brief but revolutionary. Cut from the same cloth as her bandmates, Fulcher is a fearless improviser who could make up words and lead lines in the moment. On a rollicking version of Martha and the Vandellas’ “Honey Chile”, Fulcher showcases her abilities as a self-described “jam singer” leading, as Jesse Jarnow notes in the liner note essay, an "ebullient jam that turns the Motown bounce inside out and lands in a lithe descending pattern not dissimilar to what Dead tapers labeled the “Mind Left Body” theme.” Other highlights include a pair of Ray Charles staples “Lonely Avenue” and “Georgia On My Mind” which showcase the band’s ability to play it “straight.” Straight of course is relative with Garcia/Saunders & co extending these soul-soaked performances well beyond the 10 minute mark as only they can.

GarciaLive Volume 13 puts a spotlight on the Jerry Garcia Band’s legendary September ’89 run highlighting the September 16th show at Poplar Creek Music Theatre located in the suburbs of Chicago. Alongside the Jerry Garcia Band – John Kahn, David Kemper, Melvin Seals, Gloria Jones, and Jacklyn LaBranch – there is one BIG addition on saxophone… the Big Man, Clarence Clemons (Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band). While the setlist is fairly standard for the era, Clemons helps the band find new heights on old staples like The Band's “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence" and a pair of Garcia/Hunter originals, “Cats Under The Stars” and “They Love Each Other.” One relative rarity of note is a positively blistering take on The Rolling Stones’ romp “Let’s Spend The Night Together,” dusted off earlier in the year after having been absent since ’76, which closes set one spectacularly. Top to bottom, this one is filled with magic.

GarciaLive Volume 14: January 27th, 1986 The Ritz spotlights an exultant Jerry Garcia & John Kahn acoustic duo performance in the heart of New York City. There was always palpable energy to Garcia’s performances in the Big Apple and this Monday night was no exception. Captured at the mid-way point in their East Coast run, Garcia & Kahn delight a spellbound audience with a mix of Grateful Dead favorites, folk standard, and other staples from Garcia’s songbook. The duo’s performance is laid-back yet impassioned with Garcia’s mastery as a storyteller on full display. As Billy Strings describes in the liner notes, Garcia "sings through the verses and picks through the melodies as if he is the man in the story. Delicate and deliberate.” A sultry version of “Friend of the Devil” showcases Garcia’s soulful singing and his deep musical connection with Kahn. And what Garcia performance would be complete without a couple nods to the Bard — “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and “Simple Twist of Fate.” Other highlights include an upbeat “Bird Song” which Garcia & Kahn stretch out for the longest jam of the evening and a joyous “Ripple” we imagine made the whole room smile.

GarciaLive Volume 15: May 21st, 1971 Keystone Korner finds Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders in the middle of their first multi-night run at the vaulted San Francisco club. The previously uncirculated two-set performance was mixed and mastered from 4-track analog reels. With John Kahn thought to be on another gig in Southern California, Garcia, Saunders, and drummer Bill Vitt shift to an organ trio configuration with Merl’s left hand ably rounding out the rhythm section. Saxophonist and future Garcia/Saunders & Legion of Mary bandmate Martin Fierro joins the fold, his first known performance with Garcia/Saunders, on 5 songs pushing the group to dizzying heights. Saunders noted the early performances with Garcia were often loose, free-spirited affairs, and that’s clearly the case here. The show opening “Man-Child” sets the tone with a 17-minute heavily improvised, funky jazz-fusion romp, while the self-described “Keystone Korner Jam” is (as best we can tell) a completely improvised adventure that takes the group into uncharted territory.

GarciaLive Volume 16 finds the world's most recorded musician in the world's most famous arena at the midway point in one of his longest and most celebrated solo tours. While Garcia was no stranger to Madison Square Garden, November 15th marked the Jerry Garcia Band’s debut in the vaunted venue. Though just two months removed from the Grateful Dead's sold-out 9-night residency at the Garden, the crowd’s eruption as the houselights dimmed revealed the immense excitement for Garcia’s return. The buoyant set-opening “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” signaled the feeling was indeed mutual. Love remained a central theme throughout the evening with stunning versions of Smokey Robinson’s “The Way You Do The Things You Do," Van Morrison’s “He Ain’t Give You None” and “Bright Side of the Road," and Dylan’s “Simple Twist of Fate," among others. A near-automatic highlight of any latter era Jerry Garcia Band set, this performance of The Manhattan’s “Shining Star” is so poignant it became the centerpiece for the 2001 compilation of the same name. The extended takes on “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox” and “Don’t Let Go” which followed offered the band plenty of room to stretch out with the latter yielding the deepest improvisations of the evening. Not one to treat encores as de rigueur, Garcia finds the perfect sentiment to close the night with the timeless “(What A) Wonderful World” sending everyone home walking on air.

Details

GarciaLive Volume 18: November 2nd, 1974 Keystone Berkeley presents the complete & previously uncirculated two-set Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders performance originally recorded to 1/4” analog reels by Betty Cantor Jackson. Is there a more iconic venue for Garcia/Saunders than the Keystone Berkeley? The Bay Area haunt was the setting for the performances contained on the legendary Live at the Keystone releases & yielded at least a half-dozen other celebrated official live releases. Be it the quaint, unassuming setting or the proximity to home, magic never seemed to be in short supply — and this evening in November was no different. In addition to the ever-present John Kahn on bass, the rhythm section this evening was bolstered by one of the most in demand session drummers of his day, the great Paul Humphrey whose credits range from Marvin Gaye & Joe Cocker to the Lawrence Welk Show. Future Legion of Mary bandmate Martin Fierro rounds out the ensemble. The performance itself is nothing short of exceptional, particularly the monstrous first set combination of “Valdez in the Country,” The Harder They Come,” & “You Can Leave Your Hat On” which destroy any notion of genre as Garcia, Saunders & co somehow fuse seemingly disparate originals by Donny Hathaway, Jimmy Cliff & Randy Newman into a sound all their own. After a brief set-break, the group returns for a super-charged second set highlighted by extended versions of “Freedom Jazz Dance” & Merl’s own “Wondering Why” before closing the evening with a fiery “Mystery Train.” Always ones to stretch the bounds, you get the sense they would’ve gone all night if not for the venue’s pesky 2am curfew.

Details

GarciaLive Volume 20: June 18th, 1982 Cape Cod Coliseum presents the complete, previously unreleased Jerry Garcia Band performance in The Bay State’s vacationland – plus 45+ minutes of additional incendiary, uncirculated recordings captured on June 1st, 1981 at The Stone in San Francisco. The early 80’s marked a transitional period for the Jerry Garcia Band. After beginning the decade with the lean & mean quartet showcased on After Midnight and GarciaLive Volume One, Garcia & John Kahn would go on to experiment with personnel configurations expanding the line-up considerably. By the time the Jerry Garcia Band rolled into the Cape Cod Coliseum co-headliners Bobby & the Midnites, the line-up included Grateful Dead bandmate Bill Kreutzmann (drums), Melvin Seals (organ), Jimmy Warren (electric piano) and Liz Stires & Julie Stafford (backing vocals). While the co-headline format limited each group to a single 90-minute set, Garcia’s 8-song set packed plenty of punch. The requisite “How Sweet It Is” opener wastes no time getting down to business with a galloping tempo punctuated by crisp solos from Garcia, Warren, & Seals. The relative rarity “Valerie,” marking its first appearance here on an archival release, and extended, show-stopping takes on “Dear Prudence” and “Don’t Let Go” follow to the crowd’s obvious delight. Other highlights from Cape Cod include a poignant take on Dylan’s “Simple Twist of Fate” and the freshly written “Run for the Roses.”

GarciaLive Volume 21 showcases the Jerry Garcia Bands February 13th, 1976 performance at the legendary Keystone in Berkeley, California. The nearly complete two-set performance was originally captured to 1/4" analog reels by Betty Cantor-Jackson. Following the arrival of Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux in early 76, Garcia delighted in his groups harmonious sound emphatically expressing This is what I want to hear. While were sadly missing the show-opening How Sweet It Is, the selections that followed are sublime testaments affirming Garcias sentiments. Jimmy Cliffs The Harder They Come may encapsulate the dynamic range of the mid-70s era JGB better than any other with its soulful harmonies and adventurous improvisation taking the song well beyond its form before bringing it all back around. The setlist boasts a few first known JGB performances: a breathtaking cover of the Rolling Stones Moonlight Mile, a steady grooving After Midnight, and a spirited Talkin Bout You. This collection however closes where we started, or rather should have started borrowing a bouncy performance of How Sweet It Is and adding one other first known performance of My Sisters and Brothers, both from February 15th, 76 at Sophies, for good measure.

JERRY GARCIA - 'GARCIA (COMPLIMENTS OF)'

Details

Originally released in 1974, the album was simply titled Garcia. To distinguish this release from the eponymous debut, Garcia (Compliments) takes its revised name from a "Compliments of" sticker which appeared on promotional copies of the album. The album was produced by long-time collaborator John Kahn and peaked at #49 on the Billboard charts upon initial release. Kahn selected the compositions featured on the release with the exception of "Russian Lullaby," which was selected by Garcia. When asked about the selections, Garcia noted: "John and I share such similarities of taste, something that I like John is almost sure to like it. We're very like each other musically. That's one of the reasons I've been playing with him all this time." In addition to a track list that boasts classics from artists like Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, and Peter Rowan, Garcia (Compliments) also boasts an all-star cast of the 1970's most in-demand session players. Joining Garcia & Kahn are drummer Ron Tutt (Elvis), guitarist Larry Carlton (Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Fourplay), organist Merl Saunders, and legendary backing vocalists Merry Clayton, and Clydie King, among others. Garcia (Compliments) was remastered for re-issue by Joe Gastwirt with lacquers cut by Kevin Gray and is pressed to 180gram black vinyl.

Selling over 360,000 CDs since its release and now available for the first time on vinyl, the beloved self-titled album, Jerry Garcia Band, was the band's first live release recorded in the spring and summer of 1990 at The Warfield in San Francisco, CA. The iconic lineup led by Garcia (guitar, vocals) features John Kahn (bass), Melvin Seals (keyboard), David Kemper (drums), Gloria Jones, and Jacklyn LaBranch (backing vocals). Jerry Garcia Band highlights the band's ability to showcase numerous genres in their sets, ranging from rock, R&B, jazz, and Motown, to name a few. Furthermore, the album also shows their ability to put a personal spin while honoring the spirit of repertoire staples such as Allen Toussaint's "Get Out of My Life" and Bruce Cockburn's "Waiting for a Miracle." In celebration of the album's 30th anniversary, this open edition 5-LP box set is pressed onto 140g vinyl featuring an etching on Side J and includes two new essays from Steven Hyden and Bill Walton.

Regarded as one of several standouts from the band’s landmark fall ‘91 tour, this stop in Hampton is certainly worthy of its lore. In addition to having all the hallmarks of a quintessential latter era Jerry Garcia Band performance, this night featured a very special guest: Virginia’s own Bruce Hornsby joining on electric piano for the first and only time. The setlist is typically well balanced mixing road tested staples, like the show opening “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” along with more recent additions to Garcia’s songbook including Van Morrison’s “Bright Side of the Road” and the show-closing “What A Wonderful World.” Playing with Hornsby always seemed to ignite a spark within Garcia and this proved to be no exception with their potent chemistry fueling lively versions of “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox,” “You Never Can Tell (C’est La Vie),” and “Midnight Moonlight.” The collection is pressed to five 180gram LPs in a limited edition of 7,500. Housed in a deluxe clamshell box, the release features new artwork by painter Graham Yarrington and an etching on the closing side.

JERRY GARCIA - 'REFLECTIONS'

Formats
  • JGFRR1012-03 - LP (COLOURED)
    880882546311
Details

ON PINK VINYL  Originally released in early 1976, Reflections features a diverse mix of roots-oriented styles with contributions from Garcia’s two primary vehicles of musical expression — the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band. In some ways, Reflections picks up where Garcia and the Dead left off on Blues For Allah. Speaking about the sessions, Garcia explained “we were having fun in the studio is what it boils down to, and that’s pretty rare for us. The energy was there, and I thought, ‘I’ve got a solo album coming up. Let’s cut these tracks with the Grateful Dead. I’ve already taught them the tunes.’” Assembled in Bob Weir’s home studio, Ace’s, Garcia and the Dead laid down well-worn but never previously recorded songs including “They Love Each Other”, “It Must Have Been The Roses”, and “Comes A Time” plus a new song, Robert Hunter’s “Might As Well” — a document of the Dead’s 1970 trip across Canada aboard the legendary Festival Express. The balance of the record showcases the late-1975 Jerry Garcia Band core featuring John Kahn, Ron Tutt and Nicky Hopkins, plus Larry Knechtel of the famed Wrecking Crew. Like the material recorded by the Grateful Dead, the Jerry Garcia Band’s selections were also road-tested prior to recording. The cuts included the seminal Garcia/Hunter ballad "Mission in the Rain” plus renditions of Hank Ballard’s rocker “Tore Up Over You”, “Catfish John” and Allen Toussaint’s “I’ll Take A Melody.” As Steve Silberman noted in the 2004 All Good Things box set, while Reflections was effectively two half-albums in one, "it’s one of Garcia’s most artistically unified statements of harmony, affirmation and joy.”

ON DARK RED VINYL The GarciaLive series is set to return with our first dip into the acoustic realm! This 2-LP set is pressed onto 140g dark red vinyl in a limited edition of 5,000.

The first installment of a new LP archival series, Heads & Tails is designed to showcase exciting, unheard performances that each fit onto the single side of a record, paired with evocative and detailed album art thats fun to swim inside. Garcia once spoke of developing a record consciousness, the skill set required to create music that could be communicated through a recording studio, pressed onto LP, and sold in stores. For him and his many performing groups, its safe to say that stepping onto stage most nights of the week represented the absolute opposite of record consciousness." The double A-sided single was a phenomenon that began in the late 1940s and Heads & Tails brings it into the new LP era. All sides are equal, just the jams, with the art designed to be completely flippable. Turn it backwards (and upside down) and its got a whole new cover. Heads & Tails: Volume 1 is pressed on cloudy blue vinyl with art by Madalyn Stefanak, bringing music from 1988 and 1972 (or is that 1972 and 1988?). From January 19th, 1972 in San Anselmo comes a side-long Save Mother Earth with Merl Saunders, featuring guest Paul Butterfield on harmonica. And from February 5th, 1988 in Santa Rosa comes the classic Jerry Garcia Band lineup, laying into their jam standard Dont Let Go and a version of Think. Theyre two very different eras in Garcias music, slivers of accidental record consciousness connected in spirit and now by side-flip, as well, on a turntable near you.

There is NO LIGHT at the end of this tunnel! BROWN ACID: The Nineteenth Trip fires ten more savage nails deep into the coffin of ‘60s psychedelic idealism. This series is THE premier top dog journey into the rarest and most wasted early local eruptions of heavy rock, unleashed at a time when harsh reality, human nature and disillusionment drove prevailing underground rock glimpses of a ‘better’ world into ever darker selfabsorbed comedowns. Mind expanding ’60s love energies transform into toxic aggression right before your ears! The great thing is that these moves are totally justified, ‘we are all one’ is cosmically good in theory but ‘get it while you can’ ends up perhaps better advice in the light of human history. Both of those angles of awareness can coexist, some of these bands deliver unrelenting sideways positive energy but they aren’t over-thinking it, they are youthfully driven by hunger for life and satisfying the undeniable urges their DNA thrusts upon them. Sonically, the results in the BROWN ACID series never fail to breathe hot and heavy, the guitars kill it every time, the variety of approaches these tracks take keep the scenery shifting into new places. The key element that makes this stuff so potent is that THEY (the bands) are in control. Captured genuinely with no compromise, right out of the gate. No doubt they had ambition with high hopes for the future when they laid down these primal efforts, the fact that they captured their energy so vividly at a moment in time when the only direction imaginable was UP creates a hard hitting life affirming subtext to the proceedings. That is the core energy of blues and rock and roll, dealing with the struggles of existence by flipping a gigantic ‘what the fuck’ high energy bird right in the face of the moronic defective reality these bands were born into. If you take this stuff too ‘seriously’ you are utterly missing the point, it is beyond analysis, it is life itself! No amount of thinking will get you there quicker! BROWN ACID: The Nineteenth Trip is scary... the bottomless pit of deranged vintage heavy rock the series presents continually expands over time... one deadly dose too many and you might be trapped in the bad trip loop forever... enjoy it or lose your mind!

**ON LTD PINK MARBLED 180GR VINYL + DL** Oase is the sophomore album from Berlin-based progressive rock collective Weite, and the follow-up to the band’s 2023 debut LP Assemblage. Clocking in at almost an hour, Oase—German for "Oasis"— takes listeners on an intricate and textured journey that draws inspiration from the pioneering spirit of 70s psychedelic rock, blending influences from “Canterbury scene” prog, Krautrock, early electronica, post rock, and Americana. The new album show cases Weite's ability to merge the old with the new, creating an immersive, exploratory sound that moves from contemplative and pastoral to riffy and doomy without ever sacrificing melody. Oase is characterized by longer expansive, atmospheric compositions yet is undoubtedly more composed than the band’s debut, with more of a focus on songs, albeit in the broader sense of the word. With the focus on melody, texture and mood—although not necessarily always in that order—Weite create a sound that’s intricate and meditative, inviting the listener to embark on a journey through shifting soundscapes and evolving musical narratives. Weite was formed in Berlin in winter 2022 by bassist Ingwer Boysen (delving) recruiting drummer Nick DiSalvo (Elder, delving) and guitarists Michael Risberg (Elder, delving) and Ben Lubin (Lawns). Initially intended as a one-of recording session, the four recognized an obvious musical chemistry and common ground and decided to turn the project into a proper band. Keyboardist Fabien de Menou (Perilymph) joined in 2024.

NILS FRAHM - 'PARIS'

Formats
  • LTR046 - 2xLPs
    4066004674575
Details

Recorded one and a half years after his magnum opus Music For Animals—described by PopMatters as “a musical waterfall of monumental proportions”—Nils Frahm shares a new live album, due for release by his LEITER label on December 6. In what’s becoming a tradition, it follows 2013’s Spaces, a Pitchfork Album of the Year taped at shows over the preceding 18 months, and 2020’s Tripping With Nils Frahm, also released as a film. The latter, arriving in the wake of 2019’s All Melody and its 2020 companion, All Encores, was recorded during shows in Berlin’s grandiose Funkhaus Saal 1, once the largest studio in the former GDR’s radio complex. Paris, nonetheless, is Frahm’s first live album from a single night, March 21, 2024, and contains ten tracks over a running time of 84 minutes. Frahm’s performances have always been known for expanding upon his studio recordings, and Paris is no exception. Drawing on his substantial catalogue, the German composer and producer reworks tracks from Music For Animals (‘Right Right Right’ and ‘Briefly’) before less recent material from 2009’s The Bells (‘Some’, also included on 2015’s Solo), and 2012’s Screws (‘Re’, originally recorded with just nine fingers after Frahm broke a thumb). There’s also ‘Spells’ from All Encores and ‘You Name It’ from this year’s solo piano album, Day, while the brand new, luxurious and strangely gripping ‘Opera’ sets the stage for ‘On The Roof’ from his heart-rending, award-winning score for 2015’s widely acclaimed, one-camera, one-take German thriller, Victoria. Having first come to prominence with delicate vignettes for piano, Frahm’s instrumental range has expanded to include a mountain of vintage synths and keyboard instruments. These include a custom-made organ as well as the final glass harmonica constructed by Gerhard Finkenbeiner, a master glassblower who, in the 1980s, resurrected the instrument – first invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761 – and then died in 1999 in mysterious, still unresolved circumstances. Frahm’s grasp of dynamics and tension has likewise expanded, and not only does he reinvigorate his work during concerts for this wider range of possibilities, but he also keeps developing it as he tours. If he leaves the stage to the same uproarious jubilation with which he was initially greeted, Paris makes it clear why he’s been so in demand. He’s been booked, frequently for multiple nights, at halls around the world, including Sydney’s Opera House, London’s Barbican and LA’s Orpheum Theatre. Indeed, the LA Times wrote of Tripping With Nils Frahm, “Watching him at work, and hearing the audience react, is a little like watching an athlete at the top of his game.” Expect nothing less from Nils Frahm on Paris, a vital document of this ingenious, gifted musician’s endless pursuit of fresh perspectives. “A masterful kaleidoscopic mix of music... one of the greatest concert experiences in years.“ Gaffa DK

Relations between members were falling apart and Sire had dropped the band prior to the start of recording. Their breakup soon followed. Initial releases of the album were cut from a tape dub of trial mixes as the band never received an official master. In 1994 the original tapes were retrieved from Rockfield and remixed in Australia for a CD only release. This is the first time the remix version has been released on vinyl. It has been remaster and cut to lacquer.

Hailing from the rural outskirts of Baltimore, consisting of founder, Dresden Boulden on Guitar and Vocals, Triston Grove on Bass, and Jason Kendall on Drums. Magick Potion is a hard hitting heavy rock trio channeling the raw energy and heavy grooves of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Clearly hooked on the likes of underrated groups such as Blue Cheer, The Amboy Dukes and Budgie, the band crafts a sound that fuse’s heavy rock’s gritty riffs with contrasting moments boarding on psychedelia. With roaring guitars, thunderous drums and hard driving bass lines Magick Potion conjures a vibe that is both nostalgic yet contemporary and original. Their music is a bridge to an era where rock was rebellious, loud and unfiltered, yet they infuse it with a spirit all their own. Their self titled debut will be out on RidingEasy Records world wide on November 22, 2024. Catch them on the road in the USA this fall and spring 2025.
