Details
A very limited 7” from CYANIDE PILLS. Just to be difficult, the Cyanide Pills wanted to release a new single at the same time as releasing their complete singles album, so, yes, this limited 7” features two new tracks NOT featured on their new double LP/CD ‘Singled Out’ Cyanide Pills released their first 7” single ‘Break It Up’ in 2009, following it up with a further 14 fab 45s, the most recent being a split single with Switzerland’s Nasty Rumours early last year. Most of these releases featured exclusive non-album B-sides which we’ve rounded up for Singled Out. Good to have them in one place innit! All tracks were recorded at the Billiard Room in Leeds with producer Carl “Razorblade” Rosamond.

We like Satan’s Rats, The Tours, Knots, The Fingers, Panic, Kleenex, Crime, The Terrorways, Victims, Wipers, The Briefs, The Spits, The Plugz, Bad Nerves, Nasty Rumours, stuff like that, loads of stuff, Syd Barrett, The Kinks, MC5, Stooges, Bowie, Ruben and the Jets, Kim Fowley, John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf. Details
An American-themed four-song EP featuring ‘Keep Mojave Weird’ taken from the band’s House On Fire album plus three exclusive non-album tracks! Released on the same day as House On Fire (the band’s first new album in over three years), this EP is partly inspired by a recent US visit. Alongside ‘Keep Mojave Weird’ it also features a Bo Diddley-esque cover of Chuck Berry’s ‘Memphis Tennessee’, a new version of ‘Wile E Coyote’, and a brand-new instrumental called ‘Thaypo Fuel Station’. Here’s Billy with the story behind the EP’s title track… “’Keep Mojave Weird’ is a tune about the road trip I took with my family to the Southwest in 2025. It mentions three UFOs which I saw over Pioneertown, the lone phone box they've got in the desert, The Mojave Indians weaving Blue Flax, and Captain Beefheart’s liking of Bo Diddley, all nodding to The Seeds. (Sky Saxon once told me that Thee Headcoats played the way The Seeds should have.)” Billy Childish 2026

MEKONS / HAGAR THE WOMB - 'SPLIT SINGLE'

Details
LIMITED EDITION YELLOW VINYL – SPLIT 7″ A lovely split 7” with two of our favourite bands Mekons and Hagar The Womb, more soon. Hagar sleeve design & Illustration by Lorna Tiefholz HAGAR THE WOMB – FARE DODGING WITH THE MEKON’S RIDER (3 BEERS & A LEMON): Fare Dodging with the Mekon’s Rider came into being after we supported our all-time favourite band the Mekons a few years back in Brighton. Unlike the Hags, they had a bountiful rider including a bowl of fruit topped by a very splendid lemon. When it came to us making a mad dash for the train back to London, Ruth sneaked three beers from the Mekon’s rider into her bag and then found she couldn’t leave the lemon! Imbued with lawlessness, we bunked the train after being told we couldn’t board it as we had the wrong tickets. We finished the beers before it left the station, but reader – that lemon was never consumed. A sorry end to the citrus but in this song celebrating our evening’s gains, it will never be forgotten. This song emerged shortly after beer 3 was downed. MEKONS – OUT OF DESPERATION (LUXURY CHICKEN SONG): “A luxury chicken is something very special and unique and of great value. It is also a hand-painted Mekons T-shirt with a chicken smoking a cigarette on it. Hagar the Womb are very special and unique and of great value and I’m glad they didn’t really split up that night at the Hawley Arms even though they stole our rider.” JON LANGFORD 2025

INDIGNATION MEETING - 'MURDER ON THE SANTA EXPRESS'

Details
Indignation Meeting present ‘Murder On The Santa Express’, a brand new song recounting the seasonally appropriate tale of a disgruntled railway worker. Over the catchy punky riff and sing-along chorus, the reluctant Father Christmas recounts his experience on the annual Santa Specials, his frustration mounting until the saying “it was murder...” moves from clichéd metaphor to grim reality. ‘Murder...’ is the single’s naughty side; to lighten the mood a little, the nice side ‘Christmas Train’ is a new rendition of Indignation Meeting’s oldest song, written when main man Peter was just seven years old! The new single is available from Damaged Goods Records from the 5th December 2025, both digitally and on coal-coloured 7” vinyl (OK, that’s black!) with full-colour insert. This is the second single from Indignation Meeting following on from ‘That Leeds Feeling’ (Self-released 2023), with the albums Trouble In The Shed (2023) and A Model World (2024) also available on all formats.

If you had an uneasy feeling that 2025 would somehow be the year of Thee Headcoatees, then give yourself a hearty handshake – for surprisingly, ’tis true! We can indirectly blame the passing of our dear departed Great Ribbon, Mr Don Craine, for instigating a regurgitation of Thee Headcoats back in 2022. Ostensibly booked to record a tribute EP as Thee Headcoats Sect – featuring Don’s fellow Downliner-in-Chief Keith Grant Evans – the chaps found they had a few extra hours to fill in the studio, so they figured they may as well record a new Headcoats album, too. And why not? This materialised, with minimum fuss, as Irregularis (The Great Hiatus) on Damaged Goods in 2023. Come late 2024 and before you could unravel a deerstalker ribbon the chaps were at it again, and another new Headcoats LP was “in the can”, originally scheduled for release earlier this year. HOWEVER, somewhere along the line, some bright spark pointed out, “Why should the boys get all the fun? How about giving those Sisters of Suave, Thee Headcoatees a look in, too?” Utilising all the masculine wiles at their disposal, Thee Headcoats / Damaged Goods suaveness and charm machine shuddered into action. Through sheer determination and tenacity, one-by-one, Ludella Black, Kyra LaRubia, Bongo Debbie and Holly Golightly were dragged kicking and screaming (the things they do best) out of the woodwork to lay down the 14 killer-diller cuts found on this, their latest long-playing release, the cunningly titled Man-Trap. That’s no mean feat!

We first met Trelane in 2267 AD whilst on a supply mission to the Beta VI colony. Trelane was young, courageous, dressed in calf length moccasins - claimed to be the ex-property of one Peter Tork - a stupidly long-fringed cowboy jacket and 'hip' pants. 'You cats dig The Monkees?' Quired Trelane. 'Of course,' we replied. 'Groovy,' laughed Trelane, 'I name you cats The Squires of Gothos. Got a harpsichord?' 'No, sorry.' 'Don’t worry, I'll conjure one up - and here's a studio. Now for Pete's sake stop fooling around and let's record!' And so it was, and here is the result. Dig!!!

THE MILKSHAKES - 'FOURTEEN RHYTHM & BEAT GREATS'
Formats
DAMGOOD632LP - LP
5020422063211
Details
“From the opening rasp of “SEVEN DAYS” to the dying chimes of “WO’ NOW”, the frenzied beat goes on. Even the more subdued tracks are given that unmistakable MILKSHAKES brand, pointing to THE MILKSHAKES being the undeniable leaders of world beat!” It says here. Following on from the imaginary international success of their debut album “Talking Bout… “ and the 45 “It’s You” c/w “Please Don’t Tell My Baby”, the Milkshakes decided to squander what little money they had left on another long-player. The result was the cleverly-titled, if slightly boastful-sounding, “Fourteen Rhythm & Beat Greats”. Indeed, if you close your eyes and unplug the record-player, all 14 – count ’em (next time you open your peepers) – finely-crafted tunes on this LP could almost qualify as “great”, depending on where you stand, musically. I recommend just around the corner, out of earshot for best results. Featuring such live favourites as “Black Sails In The Moonlight” and Red Monkey”, the general consensus was that this was THE MILKSHAKES’ finest work to date (ask them yourselves). That must be partially true, as London’s prestigious Big Beat Records figured it was good enough to reissue on their very own prestigious Big Beat record label – twice. But that was 40-odd (yikes…!) years ago, so please try and control your excitement and form an orderly queue… although the sooner they sell out, it can be repressed – yet again – with the blue masthead. - Hasty Bananas

Brand new studio album! Features ten new original songs! Look like Trouble features ten new original songs all offering Holly’s unique look at life and reflecting its many ups and downs. “‘Black Tongue’ is a melodic hex” says Holly, “feel free to use it, it works!” Another standout track is ‘It’s All’ which Holly describes as a memorial song. “This one is dedicated to several old friends. A contribution to funerals I could not attend” she says. As always, the darker songs are offset with lighter offerings – “‘Rolling Along’ is an upbeat ditty of encouragement for everyone, since we are all doing it!” It also wouldn’t be a Holly Golightly album if there wasn’t a sharp caustic track or two included. “‘Miss Fortune’ is a blunt advisory number for those without a lick of sense” says Holly. We’ve been enjoying this album immensely in the DG office for the last few months. Now it’s time to share it with you. We hope you enjoy it!

DAMGOOD629LP - LP

Details
Instrumental album from 1983! The band’s 4th LP, finally back on vinyl! The 'Track Withdrawn' from previous issues has now been reinstated in the form of 'The Wrong Man'! Having endured no less than three long-players and a brace of singles featuring the caterwauling of Messrs Hampshire and Childish, the Milkshakes’ audience figured it might be time for an instrumental outing. In response the group gave them just that. But this was to be no run-of-the-mill effort – no Dick Dale-esque surf marathons or Shadowsy twangers are apparent here. These tunes are more ‘rhythm-and-mood’-based compositions; occasionally leaning more towards the Link Wray end of the spectrum – as you would probably expect. This IVth album (hence the name) was recorded in 1983 at Oakwood Studios – as were all previous releases – but this was the first in their new facilities in a converted church near Canterbury, which opened up a whole new golden vista of shimmering, silvery sounds in atmospheric conditions. Of course, the Milkshakes were having none of that. We suggest you plonk the wax on your gramophone and let whatever happens happens. - Hasty bananas.

Available on PINOT NOIR RED VINYL LP (500 Copies) / ABSINTHE GREEN VINYL LP! (repress of 300 Copies) or expanded CD! Not many people realise… That The Damned have produced a fine array of songs with melodic, harmonic and rhythmic sophistication; with a depth of imagination and atmosphere. They spearheaded British punk, and yet diverse musical influences went into the crucible: UK and US psychedelia, Canterbury prog rock, and even classical and filmic musical influences abound. Now, with the return of drummer Rat Scabies the line-up is the same as that which produced many of these songs… with Monty on keys. Monty Oxymoron has played keyboards with The Damned since 1996, has written songs for the band, and played with Captain Sensible and Dr Space Toad before that. He is a retired psychiatric nurse and trained in art psychotherapy. Monty is keen on “free improvisation” and plays in and around Brighton where he lives. Monty has an almost impossibly eclectic collation of his music on Bandcamp, his YouTube channel, and shares ideas on various subjects on his Substack page (under his “real” name: Laurence Burrow.)

We will be releasing the debut Amelia & The Housewives single digitally on April 11th, with the vinyl following a week later. We loved these tracks straight away. Here at DGHQ we loved listening to their self-released debut album Trouble In The Shed so much we eventually released it on vinyl for the first time in August to coincide with their appearance at Rebellion Festival. Two brand new tracks by The Courettes on PINK coloured vinyl. Both tracks will also feature on the band’s next album, The Soul Of The Fabulous Courettes, in slightly different form! “We worked with Richard Gottehrer, who for us is like a songwriter god!” says Flavia. “He worked at the Brill Building and co-wrote ‘I Want Candy’. A mutual friend played him ‘Keep Dancing’ and he left a message on my phone saying, ‘I love your track and I really dig the lyrics’. He ended up mixing ‘Keep Dancing’ and ‘Boom Boom Boom´.” “Because I'm the one most responsible for the lyrics, I actually allowed myself to open up to some personal things,” admits Flavia. “We lost both of our fathers. My father died of COVID. But my relationship with my father was non-existent. He abandoned me and my sister. It was a very difficult relationship and it’s not so easy for me to talk about it. ‘Keep Dancing’ is about his death and how he still has a power over me and bringing me down and what it’s like to break free from that. You know, some parents are cruel.” “It’s a special subject to sing about and to make pop music out of,” says Martin. “It’s actually celebrating moving on and I think that’s really fantastic. ‘Keep Dancing’ is absolutely smashing.” “Life is so fragile,” smiles Flavia. “But what are you supposed to do? I’d rather dance.”

Details
Two brand new tracks by The Courettes on RED vinyl. Both Alternate version to the new album. Both tracks feature guest vocals by La La Brooks of The Crystals! ‘California’ is a song we wrote on our first tour in California last year. We wanted to bring all the sunshine and some psychedelic vibes from The Byrds, the Laurel Canyon, and tons of 12-string guitars to our songwriting. But somehow the lyrics kept some black clouds. It talks about traveling and leaving your loved ones behind. Any musician on the road can relate to this. Although you can have a great time around the world, you’re always missing someone. Home is really where your love is. We are very proud of this track, and on top of it we have a guest vocalist. The legendary singer La La Brooks - yes, from The Crystals, the lead voice on the classic ‘Da Doo Ron Ron’, one of our favourite Phil Spector produced songs of all time. To have La La singing with us is an absolute delight and honour. It’s so surreal that we haven’t even realised it has really happened! For the mixing our producer Søren Christensen has teamed up with the fantastic Darian Sahanaja (who produced and mixed no less than Brian Wilson's SMiLE album) to enlighten even more the Californian good vibrations. So open up your windows, let the sunshine in and play this one to the max!

Details
From the ashes of the thriving underground punk scene in Brighton in 1979, a band of songwriters called The Smartees emerged. They never made any records but after their demise one of the guitarists, Carl Evans, approached bass player Helen McCookerybook to ask her if she’d like to write some songs with him. He’d already set one of her poems, Food, to music, and they played their first gig with just three songs, each of which lasted just over two minutes: you can hear Food, Sweetie and Boasting on this compilation. The Chefs original drummer, Rod Bloor, contributed the seeds of the song Records and Tea before returning to his native Manchester. Soon, augmented by James McCallum on additional guitar and Russell Greenwood on drums, the songwriting duo started recording for local label Attrix records, firstly two tracks on their Vaultage 79 album, followed by the Sweetie EP and then 24Hours which was championed by BBC Radio 1’s John Peel, who invited them to do a session. A residency at The Moonlight Club in West Hampstead, London, tempted them all to relocate to the big city, and a move to Graduate Records saw the re-release of 24 Hours. Graduate also commissioned the album tracks included here, which were languishing in the band attic and have not been released until now. The band split up in 1982, heading in different musical directions: Helen switched to guitar and formed Helen and the Horns, Carl formed Yip Yip Coyote, Russell joined John Hegley’s Popticians, and James left the music industry. In our short three years we’d spent hundreds of hours writing and rehearsing our songs, recorded three sessions for the BBC, appeared on two compilations, piqued the interest of top pop producer Pete Waterman, and played countless gigs around the UK. We thought we’d been together for thousands of years! We hope you enjoy our music.

DEBUT LP! First time on vinyl. Very limited first pressing on GREAT WESTERN GREEN VINYL! Indignation Meeting are punky rail fans from Leeds. 15-year-old Peter is the driver – he’s the drummer and lead singer, writes most of the songs, and also plays bass and trumpet on the album. The rest of the crew is his dad Michael on guitar, Hugo on bass, and with Keith, Heather and Sally often along for the ride when they play out. Here at DGHQ we’ve been listening to their self-released debut album Trouble In The Shed since last year and finally spoke with the band and agreed to release it on vinyl for the first time. It was very good timing as they’ve just been in the studio to finish recording their second album, so we’ll be releasing that later in 2024. Welcome on-board!

Who said rock’n’roll is dead?! Maybe Dr Frankenstein’s made a rock ‘n’ roll monster cuz it sure seems alive to me. We introduce to you the debut LP of MARTIN SAVAGE AND THE JIGGERZ! All three gentlemen in this power trio have a solid background in the rock ’n' roll business which we won’t bore you with here. The band has already released a slew of solid 7” records which we won’t bore you with here either. Get on the internet ya lazy sods! Anyway, back to this here album: recorded by Ed Deegan at the esteemed Gizzard Recording Studio up in Fish Island, East London, on magnetic tape it delivers 12 solid senders of pure heart-on–the-sleeve rock ‘n’ roll action! From the blastin’ drumroll of opener ‘Between the Lines’, a staple in the band’s live set, via punk ballad anthem ‘Down the Line’ leading up to another live favourite called ‘Boomerang’. There are covers of should-have-been-legends with bad-ass names like the Backstabbers or the Stripes. There are songs about shitty jobs, troublesome relationships, life on the high and life on the low. It’s got everything you need really. Whether ya dig Boston 1976, Medway 1986 or Memphis 1996 there’s something for you here. You can call it punk, pub rock, garage, glam or any other label you like but we just call it good ole rock ‘n’ roll. Hope ya dig!

It was 1977 and things were progressing extremely well. We had signed to Beggars Banquet and our first single ‘Shadow’ b/w ‘Love Story’ had been released. John Peel had been playing both sides of the single most nights on his radio show, so we were getting heard by a lot of people. But we didn’t yet have a "proper" tour bus, so we all piled into a transit for the trip down to Margate with our tour manager Mike Stone in the driving seat. The Queens Hotel turned out to be a pretty good venue. There was a nice high stage which we much preferred over the low-slung platforms of some of the places we played. It meant that the crowd wasn’t totally swamping us the whole time, although there would still be a constant stream of people jumping on and off stage, bumping us, knocking equipment over and so forth. We weren’t sure if many people would turn up on a cold and windy night so close to Christmas, but it was a good turnout, and they were out for a good time too. There was none of the aggro stuff which would become a problem later on at our shows. The actual gig was typical of a Lurkers show at that time, being fairly chaotic with a lot of crowd "interaction". There is a recklessly fast version of ‘Pills’ on the recording, and I think we were playing ‘It’s Quiet Here’ for the first time live. Howard was on good form too; it would be his birthday on Christmas Day. My favourite quip from him is towards the end of the show when he says "eat your heart out Hank Marvin" after one of my more eccentric Shadows guitar intros. PETE STRIDE 2022

LONG AWAITED FOURTH LONG PLAYER BY LEEDS PUNK BAND CYANIDE PILLS! ON LIMITED EDITION YELLOW/RED SPLATTER VINYL We catch up with lead singer Phil to discuss where the band is at man… What inspired you to make this concept album, time was right? I had to look up what a concept album was, it means an album where the songs all relate to each other? It must have been an accident due to memory loss, “Phil, haven’t we already done a song about war?” “Phil, haven’t we already done a song about corruption?” We live in dark times, the stupid ones are in charge, the evil ones are at the controls. It’s hard to write songs about kittens and flowers at the moment.

Kyra Rubella was best known as a member of Thee Headcoatees and was also in The A-Lines and The Shall-I-Say-Quois. ORIGINAL LP SLEEVENOTES – Kyra (that’s pronounced ‘Keera’) is a Flemish girl who sings punk rock and Chansons with heart and abandon. She first came to our attention as one of Thee famed Headcoatees. The energy and power of her performance convinced us that she should make an album of her own.

ON ORANGE OR CLEAR VINYL The band had been together for a few months, and we had some songs roughly worked out. I had managed to arrange a meeting with Miles Copeland (manager of the Police), and he wanted us to bring a demo tape. We didn’t have much money, but I found a very cheap studio in Hayes in Middlesex, which we booked for two hours. At that point I didn’t have my own amp but the man at the studio said not to worry because he had a great Fender amp which was all set up and ready to go. The studio was a very small, converted building in a back garden, it was a tight fit, and the Fender amp was actually a miniscule combo amp, with a very clean sound. It was a million miles from the overdriven noise I was looking for. Also, there was no proper headphone mix and I had to play guitar in the tiny "control room" to avoid sound spillage. This meant I could only vaguely hear the rest of the band. We quickly ran through our three songs. The man thought we were playing so fast because we were nervous, he wasn’t aware of punk rock yet. I told him it was meant to be like that. All three songs were recorded and mixed within the two hours. The following week myself and Esso took the tube up to Oxford Street for our meeting with Miles Copeland. He had a good listen to the three songs and appeared unshocked. He was well aware that punk was "happening" so he was friendly and took us seriously. He was mainly interested in what our ambitions for the band were,we should have said “we wanna be worldwide stars," or something like that but we didn’t. PETE STRIDE - NOVEMBER 2022

We love the versions made in France of the British and American hits back them, like Marie Laforet’s version of Stones’ 'Paint it Black' ('Marie Douceur') and Petula Clark’s version of The Kinks’ 'A Well Respected Man' ('A Jeune Homme Bien'). With exclusive new artwork by Bruce Brand at Arthole! The four albums in the set are - Headcoats Down! The Kids are all Square, This Is Hip! Headcoatitude W.O.A.H! Bo in Thee Garage Thee Headcoats was a band formed in Chatham, Kent, England in 1989, that was well known for its garage rock sound, explicitly sticking to this style on almost all of their albums. The band's signature sound as well as their prolific writing has been attributed to Billy Childish's love of simple, direct recording. The band has been on multiple labels including Billy's own Hangman Records, Damaged Goods and Sub Pop. Described in the New York Times as 'the king of garage rock', Thee Headcoats had their roots in the British punk scene of the 1970s (both Billy and Bruce playing in The Pop Rivets and The Milkshakes). The band recorded songs by The Clash under the pseudonym Thee Stash. The band also recorded tribute albums to Bo Diddley and Jimmy Reed. Their debut album featured new versions of songs recorded by Son House including 'John the Revelator' and 'Child's Death Letter', both of which were later covered by The White Stripes upon whom Billy and Thee Headcoats were a great influence. These influences give a good indication of the band's sound; punk mixed with pure rhythmic rock 'n' roll and blues.

Details
An 18 track compilation featuring the best of Croydon's punk and post punk scene! Are They Hostile? Is a new documentary film about the Punk, New Wave and Indie scene in Croydon in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. It takes its name from the first single by Croydon band Bad Actors. To coincide with the film’s release Damaged Goods Records are releasing a compilation vinyl LP and CD featuring bands from in the film including Johnny Moped, The Marines, The Daleks, Case, Fanatics and also bands such as The Straps who played Croydon many times usually at The Star Pub in West Croydon. The CD version also features a specially recorded introduction by the legendary ex-Croydon Greyhound DJ Peter Fox. It’s been argued that Croydon was the birthplace of Punk in the UK, largely due to The Damned and Johnny Moped. But there was a group of other, less well-known bands who were part of that scene, or who came just after, but who didn’t achieve the same success or recognition. The film and album attempt to set the record straight by shining a light on bands such as Bad Actors, Case, The Daleks, The Heroes and Fanatics. The music still fizzes with the energy and enthusiasm of youth and the punk ethos of just doing it. And the participants, if a bit older and slightly less slim than forty years ago, come alive in the current interviews as if connected to the mains. As the saying goes, “old punks don’t die”, but they do remember. The documentary film takes us through the history of these bands, the people in them, the places they played and, through current interviews with “a bunch of old punks”, what they did next, and how formative and important being in a band was for them growing up. The film is the brainchild of Bad Actor Griff Griffiths and Mark Williams and will premier at the David Lean Cinema in Croydon on 2nd September with a Q & A afterwards by Griff and Mark, and an aftershow party nearby with special celebrity guests TBC. Griff explains: “It’s also a film about being young, being passionate, being part of something.”

Last year saw the release of A Little More Time With, a 10” mini LP by The Senior Service, as well as his recent debut solo album, The Master Of None, (released on Acid Jazz). There’s also been a string of hometown reformation gigs with the Prisoners, and a US tour with the Woggles, And now this! We’re extremely proud to be releasing Reflections In The Glass, a brand new album by Graham Day & The Gaolers.

The Courettes proudly present their third album, Back In Mono. It’s a milestone in their career so far. You can look forward to some “spit ´n´snarl garage rumble-meets-Phil Spector pop” showcasing the band in top form – great songwriting skills, Spector-esque arrangements, with broader nuances, influences and production qualities added to their garage rock recipe. Fourteen Wagnerian teen-trash-tragedy masterpieces – it’s as if The Ronettes and The Ramones were invited to a wild party in Gold Star Studios’ echo chamber. Fuzz guitars, loud drums, trashy pianos, jingle bells, tambourines and three-minute dance floor garage killers where a Wall of Sound blasts the songs out of the speakers! Produced and recorded by Søren Christensen at Starr Sound Recording Studios in Denmark and mixed by top producer/wall of sound aficionado Seiki Sato in Japan.

Long-awaited reissue of a Medway classic! 12 track vinyl LP and 18 track CD including bonus single and demo recordings. The Daggermen all went to Rede Secondary School in Medway, Kent. It was a school for those that failed their 11 plus, or who passed it but decided to go there anyway (as Jon pretends). Being in some of the same classes we became friends and found we liked the same music; The Who, The Small Faces, The Kinks, The Beatles and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. We started going to Carnaby Street, wearing Beatle boots and generally being a bit Moddy. Dave’s older brother, James Taylor, played organ in The Prisoners and we’d listen to cassette tapes of them along with other local band, The Milkshakes as we bounced on the trampoline during P.E. After watching both bands play live in local venues such as the M.I.C. club in Chatham we formed The Daggermen, working out who was going to play which instrument as we stood next to the now demolished school sports hall. No one can quite remember who thought of the name, The Daggermen (it was me) or how comes Jon was playing bass on a guitar in the band at the very start and then Terry took over when we started gigging (it was because he had a real bass guitar and a car). But the next thing was that we were supporting The Prisoners both in Medway and places such as the 100 Club in Oxford Street. Then, one sunny day at around the age of 17, I bumped into Billy Childish walking across a field. I formally introduced myself and told him that he should definitely come and see our band that night because we were “fucking brilliant”. He did turn up and bought us a tray of whiskies whilst we were on stage, a sure sign that he had liked it. This led to him and Russ Wilkins, bass player in The Milkshakes alongside Billy, asking us if we wanted to record an E.P. for Russ’s label, Empire Records. This was our first ever recording called Introducing The Daggerman which was made in a brick arch under Rochester bridge that we rented for £2 a week to rehearse in and lovingly referred to as ‘The Hole’. We got ourselves a “manager” (our mate, Vic Templar) and started playing up and down England, drinking as much as possible in the van on the way to each gig, often paralytic by the time we went on stage. Our musical style was a sort of mixture of punk and mod and we played covers such as ‘Heatwave’ (The Who’s version) and ‘Get Ready’ by the Temptations, along with Dave and Terry’s originals. Then came a change of line up when Jon resumed his position as bass player and Terry left for America. We started wearing military jackets thanks to Jimi Hendrix and made our first long player, Dagger In My Mind (I got the title off an episode of Star Trek, although I remembered it wrong and it should have been ‘Dagger Of The Mind’). The album was produced by James Taylor and Allan Crockford of The Prisoners at Woolly Studios on the Isle of Sheppey in 1986. This line-up played together for a couple of years up and down the country (also with a few gigs in France) before we called it a day and sailed off into the future in bands such as The James Taylor Quartet, The Kravin’ “A”s, The Solarflares and Billy Childish and The Buff Medways. As energetic youths we had a lot of fun and I am very proud to have been part of The Daggermen. We hope you enjoy these recordings, now all gathered together for the first time.

WILD BILLY CHILDISH & THE SINGING LOINS - 'SONG OF THE MEDWAY'

Details
Billy & The Loins reunite for a tribute 7” to founding Loins member Chris Broderick. Billy recorded the first two Singing Loins LPs with Chris Broderick and Arf’ Alan in his bathroom at May Road, Rochester in 1991 and 1993. The lads then decided to record an LP of folk variations of Billy’s own tunes, called At The Bridge. The Singing Loins then went their own way recording many LPs. Fast forward to late 2021 and the singer Chris was diagnosed with blood cancer. Before his passing in January 2022, he let Arf (and later Loin Rob), know that he wished them to carry on the group. That said Billy proposed a memorial 45 (and an LP to follow). The tracks: ‘The Song of the Medway’ is about their hometowns of Rochester, Chatham, Strood and Gillingham, all on the banks of the River Medway. Chatham’s ancient Dockyard was where Nelson’s Victory was built. The Broken and the Lost of the Old Long Bar celebrates a drinking hole on Chatham High Street (which once boasted more pubs and brothels in a single mile than anywhere in the world). Especially written by Billy for this return of The Singing Loins, the songs are at once brand new and ancient.

FOUR SONG EP FEATURING MEMBERS OF THE BRIEFS! Steve E. Nix and The Famous Lizards are a new four-piece group led by guitarist/singer Steve E. Nix (from legendary Seattle punk band The Briefs). Accompanying him as The Famous Lizards are bassist Kicks (also from The Briefs), guitarist Emi Pop and drummer Miles Freeborn. The Motorcade EP is the band’s debut release. Available on a limited edition black vinyl 7”, it features four killer pop-punk tracks, just what you’d expect from the prolific pen of Steve E. Nix. “I’m a punk rocker who loves guitars and interesting songs. I really like The Godfathers” says Steve. Steve has been putting out quality underground music since 2000 when The Briefs released their first single ‘Poor And Weird’. After four albums, a slew of singles and relentless touring, The Briefs took a well-earned hiatus. Never one to stay still for long Steve almost immediately formed and fronted The Cute Lepers. With Briefs’ bassist Kicks on board and a rotating cast of drummers, guitarists and back-up singers The Cute Lepers continued to tour across the US and Europe and released three albums, all on Damaged Goods Records, along with a bunch of 7” singles. In 2014 The Briefs started touring again and also began work on an album, Platinum Rats, which was eventually released by Damaged Goods Records in 2019.
