Acclaimed director and musician Jim Jarmusch and experimental lute player and composer Jozef van Wissem met nearly 20 years ago, forming a close bond after they ran into each other on the streets of New York City. In 2011, they began performing and producing records together. The follow up to “American Landscapes “ entitled “ The Day The Angels Cried” releases June 6 and coincides with a world tour. The duo weaves an intricate Lute and guitar string tapestry of droning, minimal free-folk compositions destined to captivate listeners with their dark hypnosis. This time vocals and electronics are added as well. Van Wissem’s work comes from a tradition of avant-garde minimalism and lends itself well to the director’s stark cinematic works. Jarmusch has played guitar in bands on and off since the late ‘70s. Van Wissem’s compositional style involves hypnotic circular musical phrases that allow for a lot of contemplative space between the notes. Their first live performance was in Issue Project Room in Brooklyn in October 2011, where they appeared together for a Van Wissem curated concert program called “New Music for Early Instruments.” The idea for their first album, Concerning the Entrance Into Eternity (Important Records) developed from their live performance. Jarmusch has said that he considers these songs as Van Wissem’s compositions, and sees himself as someone filling in the background to Jozef ’s foreground, like the “scenic” on a film shoot, the one who paints the backdrops. “The sound of the lute is as bright as the sun, a beautiful red color and my stuff sounds sort of like the moon, more like blue, like mercury.” .According to Van Wissem: We started with layers of instrumental parts.. Jim recorded a otherworldly Passerelle bridge guitar part to which we added vocals. This became the title track " The Day The Angels Cried" The lyrics for this song came to me during a vision I had in a dream. It was much like a vision Swedenborg writes about. In it he converses with angels. In my vision the angel looked down from the heavens upon the earth engulfed in flames. SUKPATCH - 'LITE HITS'

In the early ’90s there were a few like minded friends making a unique style of lo-fi pop music. At the core of this non-scene were Sukpatch, Land of the Loops and The Ah Club, who all tended to play on each other’s recordings. As the decade went on each of them learned how to use their instruments better, smoothing over the edges, but in typical fashion, the early home recordings had a special feeling that couldn’t be replicated with cleaner fidelity and nicer equipment. Sukpatch especially were scrappy and playful, with a definite sense of “let’s try it and see what happens” experimentation, starting off rooted in guitar based, low key indie pop before adding an increasing amount of samples and stacks of analog tape loops to the process. Their 1992 mini-opus Lite Hits straddled the two worlds, hinting at things to come while retaining an indefinable charm. In the meantime, they hit a real sweet spot, scratching that hardest to reach pop-itch. Sukpatch at this time were spread out all around the country, and because of that would send a cassette tape to each other in the mail, with layers being added by each member until a song was deemed complete. Within those limitations they stumbled upon a sound that, when combined with earworm-like pop melodies, brings to mind those endless summer days when you’re a kid, the ones that feel like they’ll go on forever, only to be replaced later on by a blurry sense of nostalgia. A memory that feels so close yet so far, one you constantly reach back for, trying to re-capture the moment. Lite Hits is like a musical dopamine push, bringing that intangible feeling closer than you thought possible. One detail that made this era of Sukpatch so unique were the vocals. Singer Tara, who would only appear on Lite Hits, would be recorded live to tape at half speed then sped up for mixing, giving her voice an almost alien-like high pitch that just works perfectly. Combined with the already heady stew, these sugar sweet vocals charged the entire proceedings ahead, creating a whole that was catchy as can be. Originally released on cassette by Slabco in 1992, Concentric Circles is delighted to present Lite Hits on LP for the first time. This is short and sweet like the best pop albums. When it’s over you’ll just want to flip the record and hear the whole damn thing again (and again).

Mark Robinson and Trevor Kampmann are Uncomfortable Police. They have been collaborating for years. First as Fang Wizard (2011) and then Party Milk in 2023. While those LPs are primarily instrumental, this new 15-song Michelin Star Hardcore album sees them both getting in front of the microphone as lead and background singers. Mark started and starred in the bands Unrest (who just released the 30th Anniversary edition of their Perfect Teeth album with 4AD), Air Miami, Flin Flon, Grenadine and more. Trevor’s records his solo material until the moniker hollAnd for years and has produced and mastered albums by the likes of Cat Power and Explosions In The Sky. On Mark’s seminal Teenbeat label that he formed at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia, just outside DC. This physical phonograph record contains one extra song that will not be available digitally.
