"The overall idea of the album is a slow and gradual process taking apart the violin sound" says Aisha and features her reinterpretations of music from an eclectic collection of musicians - Steve Reich, Morton Feldman, Elvis Presley and John Cale - along with her own compositions. Opener Violin Phase (1967) by Steve Reich and performed live sets the scene - "the kind of solid, rhythmic material which is ideal for 'unravelling' the music to come." Her lilting take on Harbor Lights taken from Elvis Presley's 1954 Sun Sessions sees Aisha take lead vocal and replaces the original guitar and bass with three plucked violins. A student of the renowned World College Of The Adriatic, Aisha has worked with Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Helmut Lachenmann, the London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Modern, Pierre Boulez, Peter Eotvos and Sir Colin Davies. As a soloist she has performed at the Aldeburgh, Klangspuren and Latitude festivals, and venues including Wigmore Hall, King’s Place, Vortex Jazz Club, Café Oto, Zankel and Weill Recital Halls at Carnegie Hall, La Maison de Radio France in Paris, Le Corum in Montpellier and London’s South Bank. Aisha has performed live on BBC Radio 3 and 4, France Musique and Kazakh National TV. Other performance broadcasts include Radio France, Resonance FM, WQXR New York and ORF Austrian TV. She also co-directs London Contemporary Music Festival with Lucy Railton, Igor Toronyi-Lalic and Sam Mackay.

Fuelled by caffeine, early Orbital and Photek, ‘Upstepping’ is an album of newclassical electronic experimentalism where Coates pushes the boundaries of what a cello is capable of. As Coates explains, “About 95 per cent of the sounds are derived from recording the cello and processing it digitally. A hi-hat equivalent is often a distorted, compressed and heavily EQ’d horsehair-on-steel stroke. All the melodic pitched sounds, even the ones that feel like keys, are samples of the tail of a cello harmonic. For example, ‘Perfect Love’ is a study in grey, concealing the source – it’s 100 per cent made from different types of cello attack.” The result is an astonishing record rich in the sonic and rhythmic palette of dance and electronic music - with hints of early rave, garage and the sounds of 1980s London pirate radios – and one which re-defines the possibilities of classical instrumentation.

𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝘁 make textural, layered music that’s deeply soulful and melancholic, utilising live instrumentation as well as field recordings captured on their phones. Ranging from sounds of the bowels of Wembley Stadium at 4am to the bellowing wind coming off the Leicestershire hills and broken machinery. The result is a collage of sound inspired by the likes of Arthur Russell, Bjork, Lonnie Holley and Scott Walker, with hints of Connan Mocakasin, Windy & Carl and James Blake all influenced and shaped by the world at large. The pair say, “We wanted the freedom to explore as many musical directions as we could, representing both the abundance of material at our fingertips, whilst also illustrating the sense of claustrophobia, detachment and fickleness that can easily coincide when flicking between 100 tabs on your screen or finding yourself 2 hours deep into a YouTube rabbit hole.”

There Is No Elsewhere is Haiku Salut’s third album and sees the acclaimed trio from Derbyshire continue their distinctive re-imagining of dreampop and rural electronica. Influenced by the evocative film soundtracks of Yann Tiersen and Benoît Charest, the genre-melting electronica of early Múm, and the impressionistic writing of Haruki Murakami, the band have previously released two critically acclaimed albums whilst last year they collaborated with Public Service Broadcasting on the track “They Gave Me A Lamp”, which featured on the PSB’s top five album, Every Valley. Yet it is this release that sees the band finally find their place, both musically and politically. “It is an album about occupying your space, being proud of what you believe in and who you are,” says Sophie Barkerwood from the band. “It’s about making small life changes, making better decisions, writing better songs, having better conversations, knowing that these can lay foundations for change. It’s about finding who you are and not being dictated to about what you should be. It’s about celebrating others. It’s about making changes for a better future.” This sense of solidarity and community prompted Haiku Salut to work with Glastonbury Brass on “Cold To Crack The Stones” and “The More And Moreness”, both of which marry the band’s ambitious interweaving of electronic and organic, natural and unnatural with the triumphant warmth of a brass band in full flow (with the former featuring a manipulation of a NASA recording of pulses emitted by lightning). It also provided the emotional core of the hypnotic electronic attack of “Occupy”, the genre-melting joy of “We Are All Matter”, and the startling “I Am Who I Remind You Of”, a seven minute pastoral symphony that sees treated vocals and glitched electronica blur into tradition, history and a sense of belonging, like waking up to sunshine after a long and dazzling dream.

Composer, producer, and violinist Raven Bush has brought his genre-defying approach, blending strings and electronics, across the music, film, and performing arts industries for over a decade. He is a member of the critically acclaimed Speakers Corner Quartet, whose track Geronimo Blues, featuring Kae Tempest, won Best Contemporary Song at the 2024 Ivor Novello Awards. For their debut album, ‘Further Out Than the Edge’, Bush and his band mates worked side by side with acclaimed artists like Sampha, Laraaji, Kelsey Lu and Tirzah. Bush’s scoring and writing work with the Quartet includes the acclaimed BBC and Fable Pictures drama series Mr Loverman, with solo projects including soundtracks for director Phillip Kaminiak’s short films featured in the LoveSick series on Nowness, BAFTA winner Simon Smith’s Murmur, and co-composing the trailer score for Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. A versatile collaborator, Bush has appeared on releases by everyone from Christine & The Queens, Young Fathers and Ben Howard, to Ghostpoet and Beth Gibbons. His projects alongside jazz luminaries include Shabaka Hutchings and Tom Skinner (The Smile), Archie Sheep, Melvin Van Peebles, and Mulatu Astatke. Meanwhile, Bush’s first solo album, ‘Fall Into Noise’, released in 2021 on the PRAH label, was described by Electronic Sound as a “sparkling debut”. On stage, he has performed with the likes of Mica Levi and the London-based experimental music and art collective CURL collective. At Funkhaus Berlin, he composed and performed sold-out shows alongside Floating Points and Lotic for the renowned choreographer Kiani Del Valle’s Dance piece, Las Casas Invisibles.

Inspired by the Rest Zone of the long-defunct Millennium Dome, 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝘁's latest LP draws on the pair’s shared sense of millennial melancholia across twelve tracks of submerged songwriting and woozy ambience. Combining unorthodox production techniques, with an ear for melody, the result is a spellbinding reflection on growing up with the 21st century. Created for the dawn of a new century, the Millennium Dome has come to be seen as a symbol of the failed optimism of the 1990s. For 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝘁, though, it represents something else. Through conversations about the space, the pair recalled how it felt when they visited on school trips as children. The wonder it provoked, the atmosphere it created: idealistic and hopeful. Built on the Greenwich peninsula, where time “literally begins”, the Dome was a monument to a bygone age of hopefulness – a mood that coloured the childhoods of a generation now approaching their thirties. In particular, 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝘁 remember the Millennium Dome’s Rest Zone – a section of the exhibition dedicated to wellness and renewal, where visitors were invited to lie down and let soft, pulsing lights wash over them. The experience was soundtracked by the Longplayer, a 1000-year long composition played on singing bowls due to finish its repetitive cycles some time in 2999. It was in this strange, turn-of-the-century sanctuary, that the duo first heard ambient music – it’s a place they’ve never forgotten. For a band concerned with memory, this pocket of peace has come to represent a calm before the storm – a distinctly relatable ennui for children of the nineties, who came of age as the supercharged world of the future began to crash. ‘𝙎𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙏𝙤𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙈𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙣’ then, sits in the foggy terrain between the optimism of childhood and the slump of the present day. Far from being defeatist or nostalgic, it is concerned with the disorienting sensations of growing up and remembering; an album about memories of the future. The LP also contains their most direct music to date, as the pair swap obscured melodies for comparatively clear singing. Take “How?”, for instance, a plaintive ballad that blooms through the rolling fug of cloudy organs; or penultimate track “A Thousand People Floating”, which blends Rapson’s vulnerable vocal performance with soaring trance-like euphoria. Elsewhere, their ability to create soundscapes that are once unplaceable while feeling strangely familiar is on full display. Instrumental “AV Duet” bobs and weaves with childlike energy, while “Before the Crash” sets burnt woodwinds against a gently clanking beat. ‘𝙎𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜...’ comes at a significant moment for the duo. Over the summer the pair were composing and recording music with producer Steve Guy Hellier, formerly of Death In Vegas, for Mark Leckey's Tate Britain show 'O' Magic Power Of Bleakness', which opened on 24th of September 2019, and runs until the 5th of January next year. The show – a contemporary fairy-story set against a lifesize replica of a motorway bridge – has proved the perfect playground for their sensibilities. Married to Leckey’s similar taste for the warped magic of memory, their compositions play a vital role in one of the most talked about installations of the year.

*NEON ORANGE VINYL* The chance to slow down and take stock can be a welcome one. Hiro Amamiya certainly isn’t alone in feeling like life’s currently on pause, but the Teleman drummer’s debut solo EP Uncertainty comes during a rare break after eight years, three albums and numerous globe-trotting tours. Now comes time to reflect. Saying that, Uncertainty isn’t a reflection on his ‘day job’ specifically. In fact, listening to it, it’s very little to do with Teleman at all. Released under the moniker Hiro Ama, the EP’s tonal references to Hiro’s Japanese homeland, use of field recordings and the pared-down house rhythms that underpin its six tracks offer a sense of staying still and expressing the thoughts, memories and emotions that flooded his mind during a period of self-isolation. “This EP is a mixture of feelings like sadness, loneliness, confusion, hope and nostalgia” says Hiro. “It was a bit like writing a diary, only I wrote music instead.” There is no specific narrative to Uncertainty. It was written, recorded and mixed within a month inside Hiro’s London flat; each track arrives to the listener much like a memory or thought would come to the artist. For example the shimmering house of Broken Satellite, for example, was inspired by an image of a disused satellite orbiting earth. Self-taught at guitar and piano, there’s an intimacy to Uncertainty, with those instruments sitting alongside Prophet 8 and Polysix keys. The constant scuttling clicks and shuffles of percussion are all taken from field recordings Hiro took from his own garden – even the kick drum is sampled from a heartbeat – and give the effect of an EP that’s up close and personal, even when it unfurls and skips along at pace. Hiro has always worked on his own music away from Teleman, but it’s only relatively recently it’s become more visible - with remixes in 2018 and last year for Alabaster de Plume and Rozi Plain respectively. Uncertainty is altogether different though, a deeply personal and frequently beautiful journey into the mind of its creator.

'Freedom' is a dizzying ride from the Autobhan to Interstate 40, breezing into the city with a tale of personal truth and creative liberation set to euphoric electronica. A trip from Kraftwerk to Bjork, Laurie Anderson to Harmonia, Neu! to Orbital, Freedom builds from simple electro foundations to a climax of anthemic proportions. In the final movement, Eve flicks the switch, her vocals moving from a whisper to a vocoder filtered mantra "Freedom. Freedom ain't free. Freedom. Freedom for you and me.” Stars Aligned will be a introduction to her work for many but for the artist it’s the most crystallised version yet of the world of sound she seeks to operate within – “my spiritual yearning made manifest”, as she describes it.

*SEA GREEN VINYL* The nightmare continues. Last summer, Pozi’s 176 EP came out just as the coronavirus pandemic was offering us its first false dawn. Fast forward twelve months and another devastating wave later, we’re still a disorientated, shell-shocked mess; moving once again towards normality, but with the energy-sapping tension of continued restrictions. A grimly perfect time then for the south London three-piece to return with new EP ‘Typing’ on PRAH Recordings. You can link themes of anxiety all the way back to drummer/vocalist Toby Burroughs, violinist/vocalist Rosa Brook and bassist/vocalist Tom Jones’ 2019 LP PZ1. It’s in the music of their wire-pulled-tight post-punk, which has always been gripped with tension; and it’s in their lyrics, whether they’re trying to avoid the dull glow of phone addiction, dealing with social anxieties, or addressing national-scale scandals such as the Grenfell tower tragedy. On Typing, that sickly discomfort is once again prominent: Sea Song becomes increasingly suffocating with Brook to the fore, her refrain of “feel the rising tide” closing in around the listener as her violin cuts through the gravelly atmosphere. The five tracks here reflect another stage in Pozi’s evolution. Since coming out of the gate they’ve been a bristling, frenetic presence, toeing the line between dissonance and pop sensibility. As the 176 EP was a refinement of what they did on PZ1, Typing sees the trio becoming yet more comfortable in their relationship as a band and increasingly confident in how far they can push their sound. Typing isn’t a lockdown record, but it has been informed by it. More importantly, though, it’s yet another significant step forward from a band who’ve so far felt like something of an underground secret, despite being championed by BBC Radio 6 Music and in various places by contemporaries such as Sleaford Mods, Squid and Sports Team. Once restrictions do finally lift, that may no longer be the case.

Gentle Stranger’s Tom Hardwick-Allan, Alex McKenzie and Josh Barfoot follow debut ‘Love And Unlearn’ with ‘Phantom Thoroughfare’ an album inspired by a myriad of curiosities including William Blake, a letter from Grandma and being eaten alive by a Falcon. Lead single ‘Great Desolation’ out today and which “had been gestating for years” was completed after the lyrics, says Tom, “came to me during a long walk through central London when it was totally deserted.” It was a blast to record, says Alex “laying up a wall of kazoo and guitar and messing around on the Juno.” ‘Phantom Thoroughfare’ explains Tom “is a mixtape for the afterlife. Shoulder to shoulder with the dead. Our passage refracted by broken vessels of song. This came about after we spent a few months holed up, all separately playing Hollow Knight, exploring the desolate caverns, which may have had some influence on this... It’s a collection of shards, things we held onto and brought back from the dark.” Across the fourteen tracks multi-instrumentalists Gentle Stranger peer through their looking glass at the likes of nature - ’Caterpillar’, is a reworking of an old song in which a caterpillar’s legs are pulled off and takes a “hardcore punk route” befitting of “the insect body horror of the lyrics” with ‘‘Falcon’ “a fantasy about being eaten alive by a falcon and shat out into another world”’ which narrowly avoided being made into a techno banger.

“As a human being it’s really important to feel and express emotions whether happy or sad,” says Hiro Amamiya, the Teleman drummer whose solo guise is Hiro Ama. “I sometimes struggle to and so these are a collection of songs that explore different emotions. I want people to feel something through my music so I called this EP Animal Emotions.” Amamiya follows up on swiftly on 2020’s field recording-heavy EP Uncertainty with a record made in his bedroom and during a time of introspection to create something even more personal. “On Uncertainty I was using sounds from everywhere and whatever sounded good,” he says. “But for Animal Emotions I stuck with fewer instruments so the EP feels much more united. I also used more acoustic instruments as I sometimes feel electronic music in general lacks some organic and human elements so I tried to make this EP as organic as possible” However, buried beneath the warm electronics, gently pulsing grooves, infectious melodies and immersive soundscapes - that veer from disco strut to IDM via jazz-laced ambient - you’ll still find some field recordings. “You might not hear them as obviously as on my previous EP but field recordings are there,” he says. “I like them because it's very spontaneous and gives some human feel. It also adds some air to a recording which I quite like.”

Falle Nioke is a singer and percussionist from Guinea Conakry, West Africa. He sings in Coniagui, French, English, Susu, Fulani and Malinke, and plays a range of cultural African instruments to accompany his voice (gongoma, Bolon, Cassi). Since arriving in the UK three years ago, after a period travelling around West Africa, singing with a troupe of musicians and learning different cultural rhythms, the 34 year old has been making music with a number of producers, including Johan Hugo, Congo Natty, Sir Was and Ghost Culture. Collaborator Ghost Culture (James Greenwood)’s masterful use of electronics portray a beguiling musical landscape, one inspired equally by Arthur Russell and Elliot Smith as much as LFO or Aphex Twin. Nearly five years since its release via Errol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound label, his debut LP still proves to be a hugely satisfying and charismatic trip. Celebrated as Critic’s Choice in The Guardian Guide, it earned similar plaudits from outlets including The Observer, The Times, Mixmag and The Quietus, who hailed it as “one of the best and most confident debuts in years.” He continues to have a wide impact on the culture of UK electronic music, owing to his ongoing production work with artists such as Daniel Avery and Kelly Lee Owens.

Group Listening’s brilliant first album, Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works,Vol.1, was a haunting, meditative and lovingly considered selection box of musical reworkings. It featured rearranged tracks by the likes of Arthur Russell, Brian Eno and Robert Wyatt. But it was also much more than that. In making this record of reimagined musical works, Stephen Black [Clarinet] and Paul Jones [Piano] were two musicians doing what all music fans do: comparing favourite tracks, turning each piece over for new meaning and developing a musical understanding of each other in the process. Fast forward a couple of years, a remix album of Vol.1, 12” What’s A Girl To Do?-featuring a re-work of the Fatima Yamaha club staple-an EP of re-arrangements with Cate Le Bon from her LP Reward, a remix of Lambchop’s This Is What I Wanted To Tell You and the pair started Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works Vol.2 from an altogether different vantage point. Whereas their first record was put together over an intense three-day period in a hired-out studio, Vol. 2 saw the pair having to work around various pandemic lockdowns. This meant taking over Jones’ living room, where they gradually put its ten tracks together between September last year until March of this. They would record one or two songs over a couple of days then pause for the week, building and ruminating on ideas; it allowed the music take on a more ambitious nature – albeit within the chosen pairing of piano and clarinet – but also took in all the bits of chat, traffic noise and other creaks and squeaks of a home recording. Taken as a whole, there’s a gorgeous ambience to the record but that shouldn’t be confused for Volume 2 being an ambient listen. The organic understanding that Black and Jones have of each other’s processes as musicians means that the music sounds incredibly fluid, but the overall tranquillity of the record is made up of dozens of small nuances. It’s a puzzle that’s been put together just below the surface as the duo react with a warm emotion to the songs they’ve chosen. It’s in the way that Group Listening are able to prod, probe and contort the self-defined parameters that they’ve set themselves that makes Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works Vol.2 such an intriguing listen–and it’s the love and care they’ve taken over it that makes these versions entirely their own.

On Friday 11th March 2011, one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded took place 18 miles from the Oshika Peninsula of Japan. The Tōhoku earthquake and resulting tsunami killed over 15,000 people and caused a nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant - the worst such incident since the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The Earth Asleep is an artist feature film by director UK-based Romanian artist Clara Casian, with an original score by musician Robin Richards of the band Dutch Uncles. Together the pair travelled to the village of Otsuchi in remote North-East Japan, to document the experiences of local residents.

uh’s music represents a restless blurring of pastoral and urban. The brother-sister duo of Dominic and Fionnuala Kennedy’s debut album humanus is embedded in the London that they grew up in – it searches for the space and still that was a hallmark of their previous EP Seasick in Salts, but many of the tracks here are more skittish, urgent and beat-driven. It’s a record that hurtles into the expanse of its surroundings rather than carefully probing them. Dominic and Fionnuala grew up in Harlesden in north-west London, where their parents had moved to from the west coast of Ireland before they were born. humanus, though, is a record focused on the present. Amidst its raw acid synths, long form hardware workouts and soaring vocals is an album that’s ultimately about the pair’s own relationship both creative and personal. Recorded at PRAH Studios in Margate, these tracks on humanus speak to the urbanity of London in their club-leaning BPM and more densely-layered walls of sound; however, the search for the pastoral and peace within humanus remains.

Yoshino Shigihara came into 2019 needing a change. The Japanese artist had been based in Bristol ever since co-founding the now defunct Maloya-infuenced raucous psychedelia collective Zun Zun Egui. She then blossomed on her own across an EP and two albums of more meditative but no less territorially transcendent records as Yama Warashi. As in her music, though, Yoshino has always had a sense of wanderlust and it was perhaps no surprise that she’d eventually want to move again – this time to London. “Moving to London gave me the chance to work with more diverse musicians” Yoshino says. “And I wanted to be here too because of the high creative energy, the diversity of the music and art here and the people who live here.” The first material to come out of her relocation is a bold advancement of her sound, her third album Crispy Moon. Recorded at the Total Refreshment Centre in London with Kristian Craig Robinson, with most of the mixing coming from Hannes Plattmeire and mastering by Zun Zun Egui guitarist Stephen Kerrison, there are new contributing members, as well as some older friends. Compared to the more lo-fi, homespun feel of early releases such as Moon Zero and Moon Egg, there’s larger brush strokes at play, a bigger sound and an understated but self-assured grandeur. The album started to come together at the increasingly legendary Total Refreshment Centre - a choice in-part due to how much Yoshino enjoyed the sound of Rozi Plain’s album What A Boost which came from sessions there, as well as Kristian Craig Robinson’s other work there. Her friend Alabaster de Plume is also a resident there. Yoshino also threw herself into creative London life, working at Café Oto and becoming absorbed by the frequently eclectic and varied improvised jazz that dotted their programming, joining the global psychedelia-inspired 30-piece choir Haha Sounds Collective and making friends with the likes of Trash Kit and Vanishing Twin.

It explored not just the environment but its main residents the orbs, who, in keeping with the haunting nature of the music, are described as half-physical, floating manifestations of lost, fragmented memories. Many songs start with manipulated samples, often folkloric, historic or otherworldly in their origin, with others put together initially across a collection of synths, samplers, drum machines and guitars. “There are themes and sonics that consistently run through our music such as the idea of a nostalgia for a past that we haven’t experienced; a blending of electronic and organic, countryside sounds and influences; and an emphasis on trying to encapsulate and channel the prevailing atmosphere of the otherworldly place that is Orbury Common” the group say, and in times of turbulence that portal for respite and escape has never felt more important.

Skip forward a few years and she’s now a key figure and collaborator in the increasingly legendary Total Refreshment Centre, back in her groove as a musician and fighting hard for that creative headspace she once thought she’d lost. She announces her debut EP Something True with "Matchstick", presented as a reminder to just breathe, be thankful and exist in the present, is shared today. "Sometimes I get really stuck in my head and bogged down in things that take over my brain space and make me feel low. *KHAKI COLOUR VINYL* Sniffany and The Nits are a deranged, genuinely troubling punk band from London featuring members of Joanna Gruesome, Ex-Void and The Tubs. The Unscratchable Itch is their debut album via PRAH Recordings. Drawing a through line between the British post-punk of The Fall and the new wave of insolent hardcore typified by bands like Lumpy and The Dumpers, The Nits have developed a knack for writing unhinged punk earworms. But it’s Sister Sniffany, and her singular lyrical and performance style, who elevates the band beyond the sum of their influences. Her lyrics inhabit the same world as her ‘macabre, visceral’ (It’s Nice That’) cartoons- a world of hidden humiliations, girl abjection, crumpled lager cans, clam chowder and lumpy, over-stuffed dollies. Over the course of The Unscratchable Itch, Sniffany ventriloquises a cast of pathetic, unbalanced characters: A secretarial administer tails her Casanova husband to a suburban swingers party: "I can smell him from here: a mix of vaseline, foot cream and Stella beer". A poor old grandmother's glasses fog up as she chastises her granddaughter: "You self-entitled selfish little twat! / Left me to die in a popcorn-walled flat! / Spotty little smelly little prick! / Making your poor grandmother sick!" But these characters aren’t detached, impersonal creations. As Sniffany explains: “In Sniffany and The Nits I like to exorcise and exhibit the deeply shameful parts of myself that I see as the toxic aspects of my own femininity.” These are confessional songs about love addiction, jealousy, possession, self-loathing and “egg smashing-fury”. Though occasionally they are literally just about Sex and The City, red-pilled incels or grandmothers. O Williams (Drums), Max ‘Wozza’ Warren (Bass) and Matt Green (Guitar) have been entrenched in the UK DIY scene for years, having played in the aforementioned bands, as well as countless others. Warren also runs the influential left-field label Gob Nation- a home for ‘egg punks’ across the country. As such, the band veer between atonal no-wave guitar assault, straight-up hardcore, goth/anarcho or whatever takes their fancy, while remaining identifiably Nit-like. Always grounded by a pounding, pogo-ing rhythm section, The Nits provide the perfect backdrop for Sister Sniffany’s wild, relentless live performances.

Staging an attempt to gloss their music, Gentle Stranger say it recalls “throwing a bouncy ball into a hall of mirrors”. It’s telling that normal routes of describing music - your typical band boilerplate of “such and such meets such and such” or “we just play guitar, us, and leave the writing up to you” - doesn’t suffice for the London collective; instead a more arcane, more potent image is fired back, a wonky and poetic idea that’s instantly more arresting, more substantial. For the newly-initiated, Gentle Stranger are a self-described “post-clown” outfit that oscillate between musical forms, achieving a bewildering, almost Joycean experimental sweep; pastiche, parody, burlesque, earnest composition, genre interrogation and progression - they cover it all. Their renowned live performances see the trio cycle through an arsenal of musical instruments, apparatus, tackle, and stuff. The set (part of the reason for their now cult-like following) hangs together intricately, a fractal clockwork machine that relies on movement and spatial-awareness as much as it does timing and musicality.

*BLUE VINYL* Pozi are the sort of band to tackle the creative cycle of deconstruction and rebuilding with relish. Second album 'Smiling Pools' is testament to that. An LP that sees them at their most expansive yet, it follows a gradual swelling of their sound across two EPs preceding the urgent, self-enforced minimalism of their debut album PZ1 in 2019. The trio of Toby Burroughs, Rosa Brook, and Tom Jones quickly established something of a foundational template on that first album: a hyper-skeletal sound palette of drums, bass and three distinct vocals disrupted by Rosa’s churning violins, from which emerged biting social observations and political angst. These hallmarks haven’t fully gone away over time, but from that urgent energy there has emerged greater confidence and a playful desire to push further out from the loose genre tag of post-punk they were initially saddled with. “It’s not our goal to totally embrace and restrict ourselves within a genre.” Tom says. “I feel that the tracks on Smiling Pools demonstrate that we’re taking our music to a different place and we want to bring the listener along on that journey.”

*PINK VINYL* Japan-born, London-based composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Hiro Ama (Teleman) announces his debut solo album ‘Music for Peace and Harmony’, set for release on 4 October via PRAH Recordings. Seeking solace amidst today’s chaotic world, Hiro turned to an obscure 1980s Japanese synthesiser called the Waraku – literally translated to “peace and harmony” – to craft an album that blends electro-acoustic textures and warm melodies, while drawing on classical romanticism, spiritual jazz and electronic music. The album features collaborations from British singer Keeley Forsyth and flautist Gail Tasker. “A lot of things are fragile and chaotic at the moment in this world, and I wanted to make music to soothe my mind and heart. Modern music sometimes sounds too pristine and sanitised. I like those spontaneous sounds. ’ says Hiro. Hiro Ama’s meticulous approach is evident in every aspect of the album, from playing almost all the instruments to producing and mixing. Incorporating sounds of the Waraku’s koto (Japanese harp), drums, and synths alongside the Jupiter 8, DX7, and piano, Hiro explores organic and electronic sounds. Notably, instead of traditional drums, Hiro can be heard humming the drum parts to create a texture reminiscent of old jazz records. Keeley Forsyth’s haunting vocals on the tracks ‘Metal Wires’ and ‘Billowing’ bring a particular intensity that complements the album’s spacious instrumentation. Hiro was inspired by Debussy’s famous adage, “music is the space between the notes”, and throughout, the album is underscored by an ethos of spaciousness and simplicity. Thematically, ‘Music for Peace and Harmony’ also explores the healing power of nature. Tracks like ‘Find Me In The Nearest Forest’ and ‘Forest Bathing’ are rooted in Hiro’s love of the natural world and inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrinyoku (forest bathing). Hiro Ama's debut album unfolds with gentle melodies where classical and jazz influences meet modern electronic production. ‘Music for Peace and Harmony’ is an essential record to discover life’s moments of peace and beauty.

Following the success of last year’s Walks - their first album of completely original compositions - Group Listening release a new 12” vinyl of Tell Everyone Everything via PRAH Recordings. The title track and artwork are informed by decay, expiration and musical renewal. “The title comes from a music festival that happened a few years back in Bristol. A really small DIY festival, called Tell Everyone Everything. I really liked the title - so I stole it. The name stuck in my mind as something very open and positive - a radical action. It could be taken as a proposal for progressive change, or a revolutionary art manifesto,” explains Paul Jones. “The cover art is a photo that I took a long time ago somewhere on a beach in Sir Benfro (Pembrokeshire). The colours are all weird because it was taken on a very expired roll of Kodachrome. It’s sort of eerie. The bucket and spade had just been left there. It was one of the last ever rolls of Kodachrome to be processed, I snuck it into the developers on the last month they were still open, just before the very last processing plant was shut down forever.” The release features remixes by both Ancient Plastix (who the duo toured with in 2024) and Loggsplitter. The band were delighted with the results: “I loved watching Ancient Plastix every night and was thrilled when he agreed to remix our song. It turned out great too”, says Stephen. Of the Loggsplitter remix Paul says: “It’s like a hot blast of compressed air travelling across the downs from a ravers airhorn. Lush”

Born from a desire to explore her background in film composing to create a music film, Hannah Holland’s upcoming album 'Last Exit On Bethnal’ is set for release via PRAH Recordings on 18th July. A soundtrack for a fantasy club underworld. Seductive, sleazy, nocturnal guitars bleeding into the relentless throb of 707 drum machines, beautiful evolving arps, and surreal moments of Lynchian dreaminess and surreal-inspired atmospherics. Made alongside the music film Last Exit On Bethnal directed by Lydia Garnett, the multi-faceted London producer shaped ideas born out of iconic queer art house cinema. “We wanted to craft something unapologetically for dykes: a poetic, surreal exploration of dyke power and sexuality set in mythic nightlife,” explains Holland. Once the film was shot, she channelled its stunning imagery and the energy of the cast into making the record.

*WHITE VINYL* FRQNCY LDN, the new project from Alex Lavery and James Ford (producer du jour and one half of Simian Mobile Disco), recently announced their debut album ‘The White Edition’ is arriving on 5 September via PRAH Recordings. The album is built from a live set at St Matthias Church in Hackney, recorded in 2024. Initially conceived as a live project with earlier performances at churches in London and at Glastonbury, FRQNCY LDN’s music is a mix of strings, gongs, oscillators, FX, and spoken word, and the result is a musical experience unlike any other. Now that immersive magic has been captured on their debut release through PRAH Recordings. The music that FRQNCY LDN are releasing as their debut album is from an extraordinary live take from a performance at St Matthias Church in Stoke Newington last year, and thanks in no small part to the serendipitous bunch of musicians they assembled: composer and violinist Raven Bush, clarinettist Arun Ghosh, cellist Satin Beige Chousmer, and harpist Chloe Chousmer-Kerr. Alongside Lavery and Ford and assisted by engineer Animesh Ravel, they were able to capture the music to a world class level. FRQNCY LDN has its roots in a supermoon that occurred three summers ago, after the hottest day of the year. Two of Lavery’s friends gave a sound bath that evening. “I’m not overly into astronomy or anything but the experience was nuts,” he says. “I had to find out what had just happened. What felt like forty minutes was actually two and a half hours. We were all out. It was so profound that I was hooked.” He immediately signed up for a sound therapy course where he learned about what he calls a “brain hack” to meditation. “The thing about sound therapy is there’s a lot that’s meditation-based, and I find meditation really difficult. I’ve got a very busy brain. What was alluring about this process of sound immersion, a sound bath, whatever you want to call it, is it’s basically a hack to making your brain get into a meditative state.”

ROBIN RICHARDS, principal composer in Manchester art-pop band Dutch Uncles, announces details of Taproots; his long-awaited debut solo album, set to be released 19th September on PRAH Recordings. Inspired by artists such as Flying Lotus, Arvo Pärt, Phillip Glass, Kate Bush, Boards of Canada and Tim Hecker, the album’s arc includes pieces about self-doubt, positive life changes, fatherhood and a suite of concept pieces about the life cycle of trees. The record features contributions throughout from pianist Chris Illingworth (of the Mercury Prize-winning band GoGo Penguin), flautist Ellen Beth Abdi (emerging Manchester solo artist) and Brendan Williams (who co-produced the record). Taproots is a departure from Richards’ work to date, which includes six albums with his band Dutch Uncles (“Stockport’s answer to Talking Heads” - The Guardian, 2023) and 2021’s double film soundtrack release The Earth Asleep & Birdsong (PRAH Recordings).

This new release from PRAH Recordings sees cellist Oliver Coates take on Bryce Hackford’s Moodymann-esque dance floor assault Another Fantasy – the lead track from Bryce’s 2013 ‘Fair’ EP that won support from the likes of Jacques Renault, Ewan Pearson & Dubfire. Oliver de-constructs the track and re-builds it entirely made from cello parts managing to make the already dark tune perhaps even more menacing. The result is astounding.
