MATT KIVEL - 'ESCAPE FROM L.A.'

Details

Kurt Vile once sang that he had a freeway in mind, but Matt Kivel (Vile’s former Woodsist labelmate) literally has a freeway mind. Kivel grew up in Santa Monica, California, getting shuttled up and down the 10, the 101, PCH, and all the other freeways Angelenos lovingly affix definite articles to. He started out in music as part of the buzzy, Eagle Rock-based indie band Princeton, toured the country relentlessly, burned out, and then resurfaced with a series of bleak, hauntingly spare solo albums that garnered widespread critical acclaim. Over the ensuing decade, Kivel collaborated closely with a growing set of brilliant, and varied musicians from across the globe, including Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Alasdair Roberts, Madi Diaz, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Jana Horn, and Satomimagae. He moved to Austin, Texas then left for New York City for a spell and then returned to Austin where he settled down. In 2017, he started writing the songs for what would become his eighth solo album, Escape From L.A. Escape From L.A. is an autobiographical song cycle that chronicles the first thirty-three years of Kivel’s life in the City of Angels. The material was labored over, rewritten, rearranged, and rerecorded numerous times, between LA, New York, and Austin. Kivel self-effacingly refers to it as his “bootleg as hell Blood On The Tracks” with myriad alternate sequences, tempos and arrangements that will never see the light of day. It involved over twenty collaborators, a string section, pedal steel guitars, and a renewed lyrical and vocal clarity that allows the narrative vignettes to unspool in vivid detail. It’s a beautiful, grounded statement and one of Kivel’s best.

Debut solo album from DC polymath Jack Abok. Vinyl edition of 500 ‘Night smoke’ marble double vinyl, in gatefold packaging newly designed by Forest Swords Shrinkwrapped with hype sticker Remastered by Rashad Becker in Berlin With two previously unheard tracks from the original sessions - one exclusive to this pressing Re-released for the very first time via the artist’s own label Dense Truth Forest Swords' debut album 'Engravings' is back in print on vinyl and CD for the first time in years, newly remastered by Rashad Becker with previously unheard bonus tracks exclusive to this edition. Created by electronic producer and composer Matthew Barnes, and originally released via Tri Angle Records, 'Engravings' received instant acclaim from the likes of Resident Advisor, Pitchfork, The Guardian and saw Barnes take his hypnotic live show across festivals like Sonar, Glastonbury, Unsound and Le Guess Who. While much of British electronica is defined by its inner cities, 'Engravings' was recorded in Barnes' hometown on the banks of an ancient river in Merseyside, the album's earthy, organic soundscape reflected the landscape and climate: all silt and sandstone, woodlands and wind, with the ghosts of Liverpool's pop music and clubbing history echoing in the near distance. The album was a prototype for a sonic vocabulary Barnes has expanded on over the next few years: in critically acclaimed studio albums ('Compassion' and 'Bolted' via Ninja Tune), collaborations with Massive Attack and Neneh Cherry, remixes for the likes of Bjork, as well as commissions for video games, ballet and film scores - of which he has carved a career as an in-demand composer and sound designer. 'Engravings' is a snapshot of an artist confidently defining their own language: a piece of work that distills influences like dub, ambient, rave, post-rock and psychedelia into an ancient-futurist musical vision that feels timeless and vital.

RUDE FILMS - 'RUDE FILMS'

Formats
  • RF001CD - CD

Details

Straddling the boundary between discordance and serenity, Rude Films contrast light and dark to craft alt rock that is foreboding yet hopeful. Since 2018 they’ve occupied the dank mills of Manchester, heavily inspired by their precursors but determined to carve out their own sound. In early 2025 this fourpiece delivered their debut album, a self financed, self titled underground masterpiece! Initially a self pressed vinyl only release, sold only at shows and via their local record shop, Piccadilly Records, fast forward to the end of the year and they’ve decided to release a CD version to help get their music further afield. A wise decision. From the opening brooding moments of "Where Have You Been Lately?", the Manchester quartet explode into a cacophony of shoegaze infused noise-rock on "Mort Subite". From there, things don't even begin to slightly let up as Rude Films then slam into the monster that is "Death Hex". Pummelling walls of sound that act as the perfect statement of what this band is capable of. A statement of which carries on with the fuzzed out and driving "Religion" and the sprawling and frenetic "Serenity". Elsewhere, tracks like "Blood On The Tracks", "Wide-Eyed Boy" and "A Lonely Moon" take a more atmospheric and textually rich route, whilst the jangly and anthemic "You're The Image I Can't Forget" sets its sights on your heart. Closing up on "Black Snow", the entirety of the record comes to a cataclysmic crescendo with frontman Aaron Hill-Southern spitting his guts out over the Deafheaven-esque finale. Immediate, massive and with plenty of noise to back them up, we've not been this excited about a new band from Manchester in a while. Their album follows a standout 2024, playing a string of shows in support of post-punk heavyweights IST IST and being labelled as ‘ones to watch’ by their local BBC introducing show. With an end of year headline show at Yes in December, 2026 looks like a new horizon is opening up. CD version printed up in an edition of 300 (first press).

ANDY BOAY - 'YOU TOOK THAT WALK FOR THE TWO OF US'

Formats
  • DooW - LP
    N/A
Details

This is the first new Andy Boay album since 2013’s In The Light. I recorded it in January 2024 to a Yamaha MT8X 8-track cassette recorder in my room at the New York Center for Creativity & Dance in the East Village of Manhattan. I mixed it in June 2024 with Joe Santarpia and Roberto Pagano at the Idiot Room in San Francisco. The three songs on Side A (“HBM,” “If I Ever Come Off,” and “You’re In The Air Now”) were initially arranged over several live performances using a multi-track looper. When I then sat down to track them to my tape machine, I meticulously sang and played out all repeating parts, layering and ping-pong-bouncing each doubled take to another tape-track. In this way I hoped to maintain the hypnotic quality of the looped parts while keeping them organic, singular, and fleeting. Side B is a triptych of more carefully arranged pop songs: a tremolo & mod-delay elegy to youth called “Careless,” bookended by two variations on the same theme — the stark, mellotron prayer of “One & One” and the lonesome after-hours funk of “I Want More”. The line “You took that walk for the two of us” has a dual meaning. In 2011, my friend Spencer Gilley took a long walk through Montreal while listening to demos I’d recorded. He described the experience to me as magical, ecstatic, inspiring. His encouragement from that moment still echoes every time I sit down to write or record. Less than a year later, I met Florida musician Thomas Fekete. We formed a deep, brief friendship that lasted until his death in 2016. Thom entered my life during a chaotic time and helped me find direction and courage. He took me on a tour that shifted the course of my life. We bonded over surviving cancer as young men, Florida’s noise scene, and the strange lives we led as touring guitarists (he in Surfer Blood, me in Mac DeMarco’s band). Thom could always warmly anticipate all of my joy, humor, and curiosity—and all of my pain, anxiety, and fear. In this way, it felt like he was also taking that walk for the two of us—gently guiding me down a path he had already traveled. Andy Boay (Andy White) began playing and recording music as a teen in Orlando during the early 2000s, exploring noise, psych, and pop in bands and solo projects. He has played in the duo Tonstartssbandht with his brother Edwin since 2007. He spent six years playing guitar in the touring band for Mac DeMarco. Andy Boay’s music taps the euphoric and the sorrowful, both onstage amongst friends and strangers, and tracking alone at his 8-track in the studio. These days he lives and works in the East Village neighborhood of New York City.

TEENGENERATE - 'LIVE AT THE EMPTY BOTTLE'

Formats
  • HZR235 - LP
Details

***An earth-moving night in Chicago, 30 crazy years ago, caught HOT on tape and finally unleashed! Teengenerate were a force to be reckoned with in the ‘90s garage punk underground and with their string of classic singles and LPs, the Midwest was just STARVED for these heathens to break our minds wide open. And they did, and some of us were just “never the same.” Is this how Hozac started? YES, this was THE SEED. Just an awe-inspiring brute force of punk purity, slashing through incredible covers of THE KIDS, PAGANS, and FUN THINGS and sowing the seeds of obscure punk obsessions to no end with their savage treasure map of sick sounds. The heat, the power, the rage and the euphoria, it just doesn’t always align like it did when Fink & Fifi took the stage. Sure enough, it was on THIS DAY 30 years ago that our minds were blown apart and our eyes were opened and a life-changing rock’n roll performance that commemorates the 50th release on the Hozac Archival subsidiary. Secretly recorded by Ken White, the Brides’ right hand man, and mastered by TIM WARREN of Crypt Records for maximum authenticity, Live at the Empty Bottle just explodes out of the grooves and will level anyone within earshot, just like it did when Teengenerate desecrated Chicago TWICE on the same night (check out their VML Live at the Fireside Bowl 7″ too!), exactly 30 years ago TODAY!

RANDY HOLDEN - 'POPULATION II (2025 REPRESS)'

Formats
  • EZRDR116X - LP (COLOURED)

Details

“Godzilla just walked into the room. People just stood there with their eyes and mouths wide open.” To hear Randy Holden describe the audience’s reaction in 1969 to his solo debut performing with a teeth-rattling phalanx of 16 (sixteen!) 200 watt Sunn amps is about as close as one will get to truly experience the moment heavy metal music morphed into existence. However, at last Riding Easy have unearthed the proper fossil record. Population II, the now legendary, extremely rare album by guitarist / vocalist Holden and drummer / keyboardist Chris Lockheed is considered to be one of the earliest examples of doom metal. Though its original release was a very limited in number and distribution, like all great records, its impact over time has continued to grow. In 1969, Holden, fresh off his tenure with proto-metal pioneers Blue Cheer (appearing on one side of the New! Improved! Blue Cheer album and touring for the better part of a year in the group), aimed for more control over his band. Thus, Randy Holden - Population II was born, the duo naming itself after the astronomical term for a particular star cluster with heavy metals present. “I wanted to do something that hadn’t been done before,” Holden explains. “I was interested in discordant sounds that could be melodic but gigantically huge. I rented an Opera house for rehearsal, set up with 16 Sunn amps. That’s what I was going for, way over the top.” And over the top it is. The six-song album delves into leaden sludge, lumbering doom and epic soaring riffs that sound free from all constraints of the era. It’s incredibly heavy, but infused with a melodic, albeit mechanistic, sensibility. Troubles with the album’s release bankrupted Holden, who subsequently left music for over two decades. It was bootlegged several times over the years, but until now hasn’t seen a proper remaster and has yet to be available on digital platforms. “The original mastering just destroyed the dynamics of it,” Holden says. “They flattened it out. Now we got a really nice remaster that should be the closest thing to the original recording.”

THE SAINTS 73-78 - 'LIVE NIGHTS IN VENICE VOL. 1'

Formats
  • ITR415 - 12"
    657628456919
Details

In 2024 Ed Kuepper and Ivor Hay from the original line up of The Saints assembled The Saints ’73-’78 featuring Mark Arm (Mudhoney), Mick Harvey (Birthday Party/Bad Seeds) and Peter Oxley (Sunnyboys). The band’s mission was to play songs from the first three Saints albums by the original line up on an Australian tour. The tour was a massive success with all shows sold out and reviews being nothing short of raves. Now the band are bringing their show to Europe and the US so we’ve conspired with the band to do this very limited edition twelve inch four song EP that shows how blistering their performances are. This record will be sold exclusively at the band’s merch table, The Saints ’73-’78 website, the In The Red website AND Forte will have a VERY limited amount on red vinyl!! In October 2024 The Saints ’73-’78 played a 3-night stand at Brisbane’s Princess Theatre. All 3 shows were recorded by long time Ed Kuepper affiliate Derek Bovill with 4 songs from night two mixed by 4ZZZ’s Branko Cosic. The result?    “This wasn’t a tribute to the Saints … it was something else. It was eight guys on stage reaching for magic, devoted to the moment and delivering one of the greatest final furlongs I’ve seen in four decades of watching live music.” – Sean Sennett  Nights in Venice Live… Vol. 1 features two songs each from The Saints first two albums; 1977’s (I’m) Stranded and 1978’s Eternally Yours sounding as vital and in-your-face as ever. For these recordings though, the band expanded to a full eight piece line-up featuring original guitarist / songwriter Kuepper, original Saints drummer Ivor Hay, bassist Peter Oxley, guitarist Mick Harvey, singer Mark Arm and a 3-piece brass section comprising Eamon Dilworth (trumpet), Julian Wilson (tenor sax) and Mark Spencer (baritone sax).
