Cartographers and US multinational technology corporations might think they’ve mapped out most of our big, beautiful blue planet, and yet there’s always more to discover if you know where to look. French-born, London-based composer and musician Pascal Bideau takes this as his central premise on a new album of intrepid sonic exploration that delights in the sensation of being somewhere you’ve never been before. ‘Terra Incognita’ invites us to seven faraway sonic imaginariums fusing global and spiritual jazz with life affirming minimalism into a hypnotic, polyrhythmic odyssey. This time, the albums’ sound palette is more vibrant, earthy and abundant, drawing inspiration from the radiating optimism and high-energy sources heard in Afrobeat, Highlife and Electronic Afro-pop music, sounding looser, free and primarily interested in raw sensations. Antithetical to the precise ostinatos and gamelan patterns of the acclaimed debut ‘Fleeting Future’ (2022) and ‘Lines’ (2023). Terra Incognita, then, is a hybrid blend of traditional music and modern electronics, a trip into the unknown that ambulates freely, taking pleasure in its repetitions and never staying still. Bideau suggests this unmarked territory could be as much a fantasyland as it is a transportive journey into the inner self. “It’s probably the feeling I love the most in life,” enthuses Pascal. “It pushes you into a state of wonder and naivety that brings you back to how everything felt when you were a child.” He’s talking about dépaysement, a French word that literally translates as “uncountryfication” but has no English equivalent. “It’s the sensation you get when you visit a place you’ve never been before, where nothing makes sense and everything needs to be learnt from scratch. There are no cultural references, no familiarity, just a constant flux of new colours, smells, social and moral codes.” In an era where the concept of nation states and their need to be protected has come to dominate the political discourse, Terra Incognita embraces adventure without borders, seeking out the unexplored territory of the title, breathlessly beholding vistas and pirouetting to take in boundless panoramas.

TOMO KATSURADA & JONNY NASH - 'AT THE EMERALD POOL'

Melody As Truth and Future Days Radio present ‘At the Emerald Pool’, an album by Tomo Katsurada and Jonny Nash. Netherlands-based artists Tomo Katsurada (Ex-Kikagaku Moyo / Future Days Radio) and Jonny Nash (Melody As Truth) combine forces for an exploration into the sonic potential of the guitar duo, rooted in their experiences performing together over the last 12 months. Friends and admirers of each other’s work for a decade, their musical collaboration began in 2024 with Katsurada asking Nash to contribute guitar to his debut EP ‘Dream Of The Egg’. Sensing the need to explore this further, they spent the following year performing together in different configurations, with Nash joining Katsurada’s trio and Katsurada in turn playing with Nash as a duo, across a wide spectrum of spaces, from churches and temples to concert halls, theatres and outdoor festivals. With new ideas developing organically out of these performances, recording new material became the next logical step. A short period of three days was set aside with a clear goal: to capture the essence of their fluid, intertwining melodies and guitar playing in a way that felt as direct and unfiltered as possible. Working from a handful of pre-existing sketches, they left ample room for experimentation to unfold within the process. The results are presented on ‘At The Emerald Pool’, a collection of ten pieces that offer the listener a full immersion into the pair’s sound. With guitar as the primary instrument for both artists, it is no surprise that the core of the album lies here, specifically in the fluid interplay between the two players. Layers of gentle, delay-soaked fingerpicking often make it almost impossible to distinguish where one player ends and the other begins. As soloists, both Katsurada and Nash have a gift for crafting melodic lines that feel open and ascending, expressive and hopeful without becoming saccharine. Longer, more abstract pieces are counterbalanced by a series of shorter songs, with five vocal tracks appearing across the album. The decision to share vocal duties lends the record a unique quality and a strong sense of variation, bringing a wide expressive range out of a deliberately focused musical framework. ‘At The Emerald Pool’ represents the first chapter in an ongoing musical dialogue, an attempt to capture a moment of connection, openness and discovery, laying the foundation for what continues to unfold.

First UK pressing since the Hangman Records 1991 vinyl edition! Now updated to include two extra tracks, their first two singles – ‘Headcoat Girl’ and ‘Davey Crockett’! “There we were, sitting round a kitchen table coming up with ideas and tunes for Girlsville. ‘Wild Man’ - wow! ‘Round Every Corner’ (written for us by Billy), ‘First Plane Home’, a Kinks cover always played in the live set, as was ‘Meet Jacqueline’ (apparently penned by Albert Hammond, odd!) Every track was a winner, I think. Then we went to conquer the world with our albums Have Love Will Travel, Bozstik Haze (not purple!), and Punk Girls plus numerous 7-inch crackers. The fun we had until Here Comes Cessation. Well so we thought….” - MISS LUDELLA BLACK – JAN 20206

THEE HEADCOATEES - 'A CURIOUS CASE OF...'

Formats
  • DAMGOOD655BX - 4xCDs

Details

A 4CD set of the first four THEE HEADCOATEES albums in one small box. This features the ‘Girlsville’ ‘Have Love Will Travel’ ‘Ballad Of The Insolent Pup’ & ‘Punk Girls’ albums. Brand new artwork by Bruce Brand and a booklet with a look back from Thee Headcoatees themselves. GIRLSVILLE: There we were, sitting round a kitchen table coming up with ideas and tunes for Girlsville. Well so we thought…. HAVE LOVE WILL TRAVEL: Standing on Rochester Bridge, very chilly holding onto our uniform deerstalkers. ‘Louis Riel’ of course, not ‘Louie Louie’ was a great idea. ‘My Boyfriend’s Learning Karate’ was an ode to Tetsuya in Japan. Then there is The Trogg’s beautiful song ‘Baby Come Closer’ and ‘Baby Please’ written by Billy which could well be a Troggs song! Beautiful harmonies. ‘You Can’t Resist’, always on the live set, is the “shag song” and the very psychedelic ‘Gotta Get Inside That Boy’s Mind’ – dreamy! BALLAD OF THE INSOLENT PUP: In this case Stanley the Terrier (left me a present as I remember). Photo location in beautiful Biddenden. There are some smashers on this one – ‘It’s Bad’ (Bongo) is terrifying! ‘When You Stop Loving Me’ (Kyra), again a staple in the live show, God she meant it! ‘Again and Again’, one of my fave Childish compositions, and a not bad rendition (if I say so myself) of the Pretty Things’ ‘You’ll Never Do It Baby’. A great record, so off you go… walkies! PUNK GIRLS: What are we wearing on the cover? That aside, wow! ‘Ca Plane Pour Moi’ - fantastic! (well Kyra is Belgian). The marvellous ‘Teenage Kicks’ - well done Bongo! ‘Cara-Lin’ is a little masterpiece too. ‘Don’t Wanna Hold Your Hand’ - well, why not?! I think you can say I’ve enjoyed revisiting these gems, hope you do. X

**LAST FEW COPIES ON LTD TRANSLUCENT VINYL** Kiasmos – Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen – have invited five trusted artists to completely reimagine their second album, II. Released in July 2024 to critical and fan acclaim, the comeback album took the duo across four continents to sold-out audiences worldwide over the following 18 months. II Reworked will be released on vinyl and CD on July 3rd, with a digital release date following on August 7th, giving fans the opportunity to hear it on their preferred physical format first. The clear vinyl variant is limited to 1000 copies worldwide. The two friends entrusted the task to LA-based composers/producers/multi-instrumentalists Rachika Nayar and Nina Keith (AKA Disiniblud), fellow Icelandic composers Kjartan Holm and Sin Fang, and long-time friend and American composer Alex Somers. The result is a sprawling and shimmering trip back through the album’s melodies, with a dream-like haze more suited for after the dancefloor and when the lights have faded. The entirety of II has been reworked in sequence by the artists, each bringing their own distinctive colouring to the original songs. Nayar and Keith use electronic experimentation to reshape the emotional core, unveiling and highlighting stems that lay in the background of their original forms. Holm and Fang emphasise the simple beauty of the compositions, while Somers, working with analogue studio equipment, detunes pianos and strings and slows the pieces down, allowing the songs to reach new emotional heights.
