J. Madden (also of Hooton Tennis Club & Hank Bee) releases Rum Baba; hotly awaited follow up to 2021 homegrown debut record Same Day As Yesterday. This bittersweet collection of songs probes life’s big themes - existential uncertainty, depression and living within an increasingly digitalised world and its consequences - yet delivered with a joyous sound and a sense of humour. "One day I realised I had a record without planning it” explains Madden “For me, these songs capture two turning points in my life; moving from the city to a small seaside town, and shifting from my 20s to my 30s”. Since forming in 2012, Steak have built a loyal international following through relentless touring, acclaimed releases and an ever-evolving sound that fuses desert rock, psychedelia and progressive heaviness. With their first album written and recorded as a five-piece, Steak continue their upward trajectory with their most ambitious and expansive work to date. Combining crushing riffs, cinematic atmosphere and the band's unmistakable melodic edge, the record marks another bold evolution for a band entering its most exciting chapter yet. Tracks such as the opener "Cometh" showcase an all enveloping, shoegazing riff wash crashing against thundering drums and bass, wrapped in an etherial and hymnal vocal line. It stands as a representative statement for Steak's evolving sound, which borrows freely from a wide palette of heavy psychedelic sounds while still remaining immediately catchy. Sound Records is proud to present Tremors in Copper, the debut full-length album from producer, composer and sound designer Jackson Almond. Born in Liverpool and formerly based in London, Almond has spent the past decade working across record shops, sound design and hardware instrument development while quietly building a catalogue of releases with Warner, BBE, Slowfoot, WotNot Music, XVI Records, Audio Doughnuts and Sounds of Sumo. His Open Your Head EP, the first released under his own name, received a 9/10 review from DJ Mag, who described it as "stunningly original", while Bandcamp praised his "knack for balancing hooks and earworms with original ideas and creative production." His work has been supported by BBC Radio 1, BBC 1Xtra, NTS, Worldwide FM and Balamii. After releasing a second vinyl EP, Take The Time, and a series of remixes, Almond stepped away from releasing music in 2019, relocating from London to the Gloucestershire countryside. Rather than chasing clout or momentum, he disappeared into the studio. Tremors in Copper is the result of that decision. Drawing together UK club music, folk traditions and contemporary composition, the album refuses easy categorisation. Hardware synthesis, tape processes, field recordings, guitars, clarinets, intricate tuned percussion and string arrangements processed through vintage digital effects create a world that feels simultaneously intimate and expansive. Echoes of trip-hop, broken beat, UK garage, house, IDM and ambient music surface throughout, but always in service of a singular musical voice rather than genre. The result is an album that is as compelling on a powerful sound system as it is through headphones: rhythmic and physical one moment, reflective and cinematic the next, exploring memory, connection and the traces people leave in one another. The release also marks Almond's return to live performance for the first time in over a decade. Alongside hardware-based electronic sets, selected performances will feature a bespoke electroacoustic installation of handmade resonant copper instruments performed with analogue synthesisers, tape machines and drum machines. Each performance is shaped specifically for its environment, from immersive listening experiences to dancefloor-focused shows. Based in Stroud, UK.
